As DC keeps reminding me, a reading list: Stormtroop Tactics, Innovation in the German Army, 1914-1918 (Bruce I Gudmundsson) The German 1918 Offensives: A Case Study in the Operational Level of War (David T Zabecki) Battle Tactics of the Western Front: The British Army's Art of Attack, 1916-18 (Paddy Griffiths) Forgotten Victory: The First World War: Myths and Realities (Gary Sheffield) Winning and Losing on the Western Front: The British Third Army and the Defeat of Germany in 1918 (Johnathon Boff) I'm sure there's more, but those are the main ones for this video.

Needless to say, this is better than 99% of the “professional” documentaries on the subject (not that there are many). Fine work.

Whole heartedly agree, as a military professional it’s relatively easy to access documentaries made for “the lay person” finding more in-depth and informative stuff like Hapless puts out is a lot more difficult. All of The War-Room content is produced at the “professional education” level or better. Look forward to seeing more.

This WW1 series has been absolutely fantastic, and you are so efficient in giving a high level or low level overview of the war and how the armies developed over the course of it. I was never very interested in WW1 but these videos show how dynamic and interesting the war effort was for both sides, even if movement on the frontline generally wasn't. Looking forward to wherever the war room takes us next!

I’ve heard one of the huge missing pieces in the First World War was the man-portable radio. Lack of communication numerous times prevented effective breakthrough and coordination between units. Germans only partially solved the problem through the use of pyrotechnics for signaling.

The other thing missing in WWI is cross country trucks. Once an army get beyond their rail heads the ability to get ammunition and horse fodder to the troops starts to unravel.

In particular Arthur Currie and his staff had worked and put in practice the idea that part of the Headquarters Staff plan and co-ordinate the current and next operations, whilst another part of the Staff worked out preliminary concepts for potential operations in the longer term. For example, their plans for the attack on the DQ Line of September 2nd were already in an advanced state of preparation when the 100 Days offensive began with the Battle of Amiens (1918) on August 8th.

Thank you so much! This series has become much, much more than the sum of it's parts. And it is only fitting that you have expanded the scope of it beyond tactical considerations. Although, I will still stand by the Ludendorf's statement: "Division's success starts with a platoon's success."

Man your analysis of the firepower revolution and the devastation of world war 1 is better than anything I’ve ever seen. There is nothing like it on KZfaq. It’s so good

Thanks this is great and really shows the evolution of tactics in WW1 with people trying different things that then get disseminated. Something I hate in many museums including sadly IWM London is that WW1 is presented as a static conflict in which the Allies suddenly won in 1918. The massive changes in tactics and doctrine get near ignored. Maybe it's that they're not that sexy as the soldier of 1918 didn't look radically different from 1914 apart from a helmet but the LMG, grenades and tactics and training were vastly better.

the point of the matter is this is still how wars are fought. infantry attacks, supported by other arms. that they might ride into battle in IFVs and that the supporting arms might be unmanned drones don't make the job all that different

I wonder if you are going to continue the series along time eventuallly. It would be interesting to see advancements in the wars in the interwar period (Russian civil war, 2ndSino-Japanese War, Spanish Civil War, manchurian border conflicts, colonial wars in Africa...). Some people forget about this period when talking about developments in tactics.

Would love to see you talk a little bit about ‘trench warfare’ in the ACW and other 18th-century wars, and go over why these tactics problems weren’t recognized earlier. Plus whatever you’re excited to cover, of course 😊

So essentially, the German Spring Offensive of 1918 was a re-enactment of the "suffering from success" meme?
