I think the idea of them not taking off their vests was not only pride, but to show that they are not scared of anyone, and won’t be forced into not being who they really are.

You're correct. You see the same phenomenon irl with Outlaw Motorcycle Clubs. Losing your colors is a cardinal sin in that world. If you're kicked out of the club, the colors are taken from you as a public symbol that you're no longer an outlaw. The vest is a symbol of identity and loyalty to a crew.

It’s funny that you should mention that the movie feels like a Greek epic. The 1965 novel, The Warriors, that the movie was based on was itself based on a famous Greek epic, Xenophon’s Anabasis. It’s the story of Cyrus The Younger and his army of ten thousand Greek mercenaries hired to help him seize the throne of Persia from his brother. When Cyrus is killed in battle, the Greeks no longer had any reason to continue fighting, but had to travel through thousands of miles of enemy territory in order to get home. The novel, and the subsequent movie, definitely paid homage to their Greek roots.

@@RhetoricalThrill I know, pretty cool right. I didn’t even know about that until about two years ago, when I saw a series here on KZfaq called “What’s The Difference?” It compares movies that are based on novels to their source material (kinda like Lost In Adaptation, but a slightly different format). The episode about The Warriors compares the movie to both the novel and the original Greek epic. It’s an interesting watch. I highly recommend it. They’ve also done Stephen King’s “IT”, “Jaws”, and I think the James Bond movie “Goldfinger”. I had only seen a few of their episodes before stumbling across “Lost In Adaptation”, which I actually find more entertaining. But if there’s a movie adapted from a novel that Dominic Noble hasn’t done on LiA yet, then there’s a good chance that “What’s The Difference?” has done it on their channel. Just something to look into. You might even want to consider doing a reaction video to their videos. It could be very “edu-taining”.

I saw the warriors when it originally came out in the theaters in 1979 in Brooklyn, NY. I was 10 years old. Saw it with my then best friend. The scene where Ajax gets busted by the lady undercover cop made the audience laugh out loud. Because after Ajax gets handcuffed to the park bench, he tries to escape, taking the park bench with him. The thing about those park benches in New york city is that they're bolted and cemented to the ground. There's no moving them anywhere. Watching that park bench being dragged a lot of feet just made the brooklyn movie audience laugh.

1. When this came out many of the larger cities didn't run it. They were afraid it would lead to gang violence. 2. Classic late 70s soundtrack. 😎 3. Fox/Thomas Waites (thrown in front of subway train) also played Windows in "The Thing". 4. My favorite character is Luther. He's f-ing nuts. 5. "Warriors, come out to play" was ad lib. The director told David Patrick Kelly to come up with something menacing and he looked back to when he was a kid and a creepy old neighbor used to torment the kids by taunting them to come out to play. 6. Regarding wearing colors. If you don't wear them, YOU'RE not worthy. 7. Wearing roller-skates look cool but wouldn't be very good in a fight. 8. One of the girls on the train at the end is Debra Winger, this was her first gig. 9. End it with Joe Walsh.😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎

Definitely is a cult classic. I myself first learned about this film back in 2005 when the video game was released by Rockstar, the company behind 'Grand Theft Auto'. It peaked my interest enough to go back and see the film and I've been a fan since. It's certainly a product of its time, but a fascinating tale of just trying to make it back home. From my understanding there were a few incidents that caused issues during its release, such as rival gangs showing up and causing trouble during screenings. Also, that bottle scene was improvised. The actor, David Patrick Kelly, found the bottles and thought it'd make for a creepy intimidation tactic for the scene to draw out The Warriors.

I've seen the transition but one thing that they got right was the loyalty, respect and brotherhood/sisterhood. The gangs got watered down and most died on the streets or in prison. Btw the riffs in this movie were a mix of Zulu nation and Black Spades. Two revolutionary factions that the Fbi infiltrated along with the Black Panthers and etc etc.

The wild gang costumes were partially a safety decision by the filmmakers. They couldn’t afford a lot of extras, so in big crowd scenes like the meeting at the beginning, some of the extras were real gang members. So, they paid special attention not to have any actors in costumes that could be mistaken for existing colors for real gangs.

Really great review. I love this movie because of the soundtrack, the editing and art direction and it's portrayal of a gritty s**tty New York City that doesn't exist anymore. It's not cheese, it's fromage. Another late 70s movie that's awesome, but you'll probably roll your eyes at is Kentucky Fried Movie. It's from the guys who brought us Airplane!

It's interesting to listen to your comment, the gap of thought, of reflection between you and the characters. Another era, another world, their world where the education is offered by the street. As a boy, I like seeing them risking their life and seeing them fighting because they have to survive. And sometimes we find this script at ourselves working place, in a firm or in a company where everyone is supposed to be civilized and having a normal education. We have to fight to survive there too.

I think that them being confronted by the Rogues at Coney Island in daylight underscored them particularly Sean getting enlightened that the gang life wasn't good. Also that the Grammercy Riffs were enlightened as to the true killer of Cyrus

I was a kid in the 70s in NY here's a little nasty fact those train stations were actually that dirty in fact they had to clean them up just a bit because it was too noticeable on camera taking away your attention from the characters. Sadly I hear its getting that bad again.

There's more to this movie than a simple adventure story. I love movies that know they're kind of silly and play it up, but act as though it's all absolutely serious. I like the fact that it takes place in a New York City that really doesn't exist, e.g. a gang wearing baseball uniforms and make-up? Good choice. Good reaction.

Swan 🦢 was right 👍 16:51 it's all bad she instigated trouble when The Orphan leader agreed in the beginning to make it to the next 🚃🚂 and She degraded him in front of the Warriors causing a fight that could've been prevented in that sense I don't blame Swan for being bitter towards her when he and the orphan leader agreed to work something out.

The look of the gangs wasn’t meant to be a 100% serious thought of what New York street gangs looked like. The feel is supposed to be a mix of comic book and Greek epic. This is clarified in the Director’s Cut of this movie.
