I've not read the books yet (i'm planning to as of now) but everyone is commenting on how season 2 butchered the characters of the book completely, and how is this so? I know the timeline is all messy in the show and s2 was probably the least true to the books, which gives the right for people to be mad. But was it really that bad? As someone who hasn't played the witcher nor read all the books, I found the series enjoyable on its own as a netflix series and found myself to be invested in the witcher world and myth. Maybe I'll understand later when I read the books but in all honesty, I just don't think season 2 was bad at all. You guys can talk to Lauren on twitter if you ever want to give her feedback on how she directed s2 (she responds!)

It's just that the show got so westernized, simplified and generic that there is no meat in it, no soul in music or scenery (all night scenes are bright and blue), no wit in dialogues. They added tons of unnecessary fights so the western viewer won't get bored. Show adds too many new threads instead of focusing on the main ones, that + too many teleportations and locations being too close to each other (2 week horse ride between Cintra and Kaer Morhen takes a few seconds in the show) really butchers the show timeline and makes it hard to follow. But I think the worst part of this show is it's writing and butchering the relationships between characters. Yennefer would never put Ciri's life at harm yet in the show she wants to sacrifice Ciri to the weird demon-baba-yaga to regain powers (which she didn't lose in the books). Geralt also would never put Ciri in danger yet in the show he uses her as a bait for a weird mutated Bazylisk. Vesemir would never harm Ciri, also he didn't want to create new witchers (knowing that so many of them die during trials and training) he was a grandpa figure to her in the books, yet in the show he wants put her through Trial of Grass which has 60% fatality rate (knowing she has the elder blood) and then Triss which is a sister figure to Ciri in the books allows it! Then Geralt comes along straight outta Cintra (took him a few seconds) and stops Vesemir. XD When I watched it seemed to me that the characters don't feel anything too each other, that there is no chemistry between them. Eskel becoming a Leshy ?? XD Prostitutes in Kaer Morhen. Wasn't a remote, hidden, stronghold which location was kept in secret so that there was people wouldn't attack them again? Old fashioned Vesemir having no problem with Kaer Morhen becoming a brothel? I guess not. Geralt running after Ciri outside of Kaer Morhen to the nearest forest, yet in one of the scenes showing the Kaer Morhen from upper perspective there where no grasses, bushes or a tree near it, just rocks. I guess the 12 year old girl got some stamina! Too much screen time for Fringilla, the seconds season (based on The Blood of Elves) should focus on Geralt, Ciri and Yennefer, yet Fringilla has just as much or even more screen time. In the Blood of Elves Yennefer and Triss taught Ciri magic, build a relationship with her, yet here they just hurt and betray her. How is betrayal a base for a loving relationship? The politic intrigue was flattened in the show and didn't receive as much screen time as it should. Shock the viewer no matter what. Whether it's Dikstra killing assasins right in front of the king just for the sake of the show or Lydia having her face melted with the Grasses Mutagen potion, fights, swears. All of it just to shock so the viewer won't be bored. Rience teleporting to Kaer Morhen out of nowhere - how did he know where it is? Butchering the good old 'Show, don't tell' filming rule. Every scene, every little mistery is explained with words to the last bit. Words here, words there, and the plot moves on. Cherish the silence Lauren! In the books there were only 4 witchers in Kaer Morhen: Vesemir, Eskel, Lambert and Coen. In the show they added 15 more of them (lol?) not giving them a single sentece to speak. You may wonder why were they there? Then in last episode you realize that they were there so that that the Bazylisks summoned by Ciri possessed by a baba-yaga-demon can tear them apart! Spilling blood everywhere, bodyparts flying, very cool! Weren't they trained in combat for dozens of years? I guess not. Oh and possessed Ciri slicing the throats of sleeping witchers (?). Again shock for that sake of shocking. Then in order to get rid of the baba-yaga-demon the witchers stand in a circle around Ciri speaking 'Come back home Ciri', 'Come to us Ciri'. Is it the brand new method of getting the demons out of humans? Just politely asking it to leave XD. In the Vesemir anime there was even a scene where Vesemir performed an exorcisim on woman possessed by demon. So not only are the inconsistent with the books, they are even inconsistent with their own lore. XD And the casting is bad. Don't get me wrong I think that Henry and Joey are doing a great job and are really carring this shitshow but other actors really don't fit the characters they play. Oh and revealing that Emhyr is the Hedgehod of Ervenvald - Ciri's father which was a big mistery ithroughout the books which you discover much later on, lost potential. And tons of other stuff. I don't have a problem with them changing the source material, changing the appearance of characters, changing the dialagoues. I have a problem when they completely change characters morals and values, the character of relationships. It's unforgivable for any book adaptation. This is why this show is beyond repair and noone ever will make The Witcher series right becouse there won't be enough demand for it.
@Nikkizsche2 жыл бұрын
@@likeyou3317 as much as i understand your anger, you have to realise that there are films and adaptations that are way fucking worse than the Witcher and whose intentions are literally about segregation and deep rooted racism. Like the movie, 300 - poorly portrayed the Persians as a race and incorrectly portrayed their ethnicity as well as their political power at the time. They were a people who conquered but gave people the rights to keep their culture, religion as long as they negotiated with the empire's morals. It worked so well which was how it summed up to 30-35% of the world's population at the time to be under their vast empire. The Spartans are portrayed as morally correct and more powerful in the movie which is nothing as close to what reality and history illustrated. The intents and poorly research behind this movie makes it impeccably horrible to go through. However, those who are uneducated, and are the average viewer, would feed onto it like a lollipop and enjoy the message, interpret false history and some would subconsciously indulge on the racially rooted message. The Witcher as an adaptation was by all means not made by the sorts of intentions like 300 and other shitty adapted films or poorly portrayals of cultures such as emily in paris. The director just portrayed their interpretation of the story through their lens and what they think works. Surely, the writing is shit at times, but that's just constructive criticism that they need to pick up. I'm surprised that no one else on her team decided to speak the points that you have spoken, or have, and just decided to go on with it. We can't change what was made, so as much as you want to be angry about it, as i was about some shitty adaptations, I'd tell you to cool it off. What's happened has happened. You can't change that. Hoping Lauren does pick up on the constructive criticism that people have given her on twitter though :) i saw her respond to some people.

As someone who played the Games and read the books, I have to admit I still love the show although it is different to the books. But I also do think that it would be kind of boring to watch an 1:1 adadption of the books because in some parts there is not happening much that you could show on screen. I like especially the Nilfgaard insides. In the first two books there is no mention of Fringilla and almost nothing about Cahir (if I am remembering right) but I think that it makes the show much more interesting to have them in and learn slowly more about them und their backgrounds. For me, it is a bit like "Shadow an Bones". In the first season are the Crows who are not really there in the first book but it is a big and enjoyable storyline. So in conclusion, I wouldn't say that the show is bad. There are differences to the books but most of them give the story more Input in my eyes.
