Portuguese are like Davey Jones. They can step on land only every 10 civ re-balance.

It actually gives me a weird sense of pride to see my favorite civ at number 1 here. Though I suspect their results are skewed a bit due to people forcing feitoria strategies instead of just trying to win like normal.

I've seen a "new"(at least to me) Byzantines strat of mass trash spamming in Feudal Age. A setup of 1 on gold rest on wood and food, and all they do is make 2+ barracks and archery ranges and swarm opponents with skirms and spearmens.

I know a perfect way to improve the Portuguese: Tercio pikemen. That way they can annihilate cavalry with Tercios while hand cannoneers shoot the infantry. Also they could buff a bit the cannons giving them a bit more range or something to make thier siege a bit better and keep the enemy catapults at bay. Heck, they could actually make the organ gun as effective as it is in AoE3. That thing is basically a machine gun when you mass them you can easily obliterate enemy infantry (even some cavalry)

That the top is this close to the bottom in win percentage is pretty impressive. People always call out bad balance, but the balance on AoE2 DE is pretty solid IMO.

Yeah, I guess you could have guessed Ports would be worst on 1v1 Arabia. Maybe they'll always be the worst in that format. Their bonuses are extremely oriented for water maps and team play.

Also, a top 5 or 10 of your best unique units would be amazing. And maybe a video saying with wich other normal unit you can complement the faults of each unique units. For example Konniks with long swords man that can kill pikes man!!

dang in the conquers i always played the Byzantines they were my absolute favorite and yet in the Definitive edition i havent even played them yet too busy trying all the new teams but so far i love the Sicilians alot because both new civs are probably a bit broken but the Donjon drops are the best lol

Am I the only one that think the AoC/HD cataphracts look better than definitive edition? It was the most beautiful unit in the game. Still great but it lost a little something.

How times have changed. I remember when Khmer and Vietnamese were considered two of the worst civs to use in Arabia, but DE gave them buffs that made Khmer considered one of best civs and Vietnamese in a better spot. Been enjoying them ever since as I love playing Elephant civs! ^^

Byzantines will probably always be my main, just can’t go wrong with the flexibility. It would be nice to see a better early game, especially with such a good unique unit. It wouldn’t be so bad if they had something that helped defend better, sooner. And if their late game was op but it’s not

Sad to see koreans are still weak. I think giving them free fletching would help better define them as an archer civ. If that becomes too obnoxious with towers, maybe free archer armor then to give themselves a bit of a boost

I am very surprised about this because I like the Portuguese and the Koreans because they are very strong in the pi age and in water maps . Yes I know that I didn’t play with aoe2 definitive edition but when I play the Portuguese I destroyed the aI on water! Also the feitoria gives you a lot of resources and the organ guns are very strong. The koreans have a very strong deathball and their turtle ship is strong. I not happy about this but at least the Vietnamese got a buff

I think the sad thing to me about Portuguese is that they were overpowered on launch but nerfed hard, versus other civs are left good/great for longer than they were. Release HD Portuguese were so fun

The new feature in team games of sharing L.O.S. could be an indicator that port. might get a different team bonus more suitable for 1v1, I think feitoria should also be scrapped and replaced by a different bonus

there is something that could buff a lot portuguese (but with a handicap): enable feitorias in castle age, but at a greater cost in resources

Can you do a best and worst for 2v2s? I'm a huge fan of Spain, Portugal, and the more defensive civs in those games because of how someone like China, Korea, or Byzantine can help defend Goths/Cumans/Huns until late-game when their power comes online. I often wall in my own base and a teammate if that teammate can't wall, or has terrible walls. I also tend to play Spain/Portugal and then funnel my ally resources by going mostly economic and making more supplemental armies of gunpowder to back up their front line troops. They just aren't nearly as useful in 1v1s.

Thoughn according to the stats, even the portuguese seem to have a few good matchups, at least on all maps, they have a win rate higher than 50%, in games vs Malians, Teutons, Vikings, Malay and Celts. This is a better position than the Khmer had last year, who lost against everyone.

Wood is the worst resource to undervalue for military unit production. Only archers and skirmishers cost wood, and Koreans don't get that discount applied to siege.

The Koreans are seeing a bit of a revival with viper shining a light on just how good War Wagons are, how important it is to block resources using towers, and how useful it is to defend at home with towers too. Tatars unfortunately are poor because of the recent map pools and map gen. A lot of supposedly open maps have been actually quite closed, so the scout rush their early eco favors was heavily nerfed. Further, cav archers aren’t that great because of their attack delay and because of the xbow meta. They’re a micro intensive civ for sure, but also I think it’s a little bit of closemindedness from the player base. You still can go drush/maa->archers, still can have a deadly xbow army with free thumb ring (it just doesn’t scale into imperial). I really like Tatars and think a lot is to be learned about them. And even Koreans honestly.

It would be amazing to know which civ the AI is best with. This might be a nice video idea!

0:30 ... me reacting with byzantines being number 5 ... my heart QQ ... if they are meant to be a defensive or turtlefaction why not make walls and towers slightly cheaper or allow to build them faster? i get that they potentionaly have the toughest structures once in imperial age but that may matter little if your buildings are to be outranged or you simply get out macroed by a civ with a ecoadvantage ... you would have to suffer longer ... ... but yea them not having a early eco advantage realy hurts i think either silghtly more carry capacity on villagers like +5 or slightly cheaper farms like -5 wood .. i also would have liked a bit of a buff to archers ... either in lower cost or higher effectiveness ...

I would suggest a few changes for huns: 1) replace the imperial age tech with something like +2 range for cav archers 2) no paladins to be historically accurate but buffed tarkens, something like +40hp for cavalry

you'd think the early access comments would stop normal subscribers from commenting "first", because they obviously aren't first... but then again, we are speaking of the KZfaq community 😩 the 146 916 "first" comments are approaching steadily

I wonder if portugese problem is that they are balanced around their feitoria. They have, in theory, limitless resources and staying power, so everything else they get isn't up to snuff...even though you can't always rely on a feitoria, and games don't always go on long enough for them to truly matter, etc.

Historically the bizantines deserves a good early game bonus cause they resisted the barbarian invasions while the western empire fell, and had the most important and whealthy city in the world at that time.

I think it's a bit more than just Tatar CA taking a while to get going. Huns obviously also specialize in CA and they're #2.

I think byzantines need a stone wall building speed bonus. It’s not like it would be too OP. The stone needed to full wall an Arabia map would take a huge eco hit, not mentioning that they’d need to go up earlier to pull it off. Further, most civs would expect it and just drush FC or plain FC. This way, byzantines would get a bonus that suits their game style

I dont play online cuz im always on the road. Not alway have wifi available for my laptop. I downloaded aoe2 hd and play offline. When i can. As such, i like the saracens. Their mamelukes are versatile. And can do well in hit and run.

I think this is less about tbh but more about the stragety that players favour when choosing respective civ. Like you choose koreans because you wanna tower rush, especially in lower to mid-elo and that isn't very sucessful, you choose turks because you wanna go for gunspowder/fast imp and that's also not very sucessful and lastly Portugese are often chosen for ultra defense fertoria play in low elo, well, which also usually isn't excatly effective.
