That was something that bugged me when people said skin care (beyond washing the face) was "vanity". The skin is the largest organ in the body AND the first line of defense in our immune system. Of course you want to take care of it! All of it.

THANK YOU ! It annoys me so much when people say I am excessive with my skincare or my sunscreen like yes I am doing it partly because I want better looking skin, but also because I am at a higher risk of skin cancer (pale skin, lot of moles, very bad burn a few years ago) and your skin protects your entire body but what is protecting it ? There's only so much your skin can do you might as well take care of it.

Some people are triggered by any reference to vanity. They see an interest in beauty as being entirely self-absorbed. But, how your skin looks is linked to your health in many cases.

Thats like saying that taking care of your teeth is "vanity". Just like skin there is aesthetics component such as not having yellow teeth and bad breath but we of course dont want teeth cavities which can progress and become more dangerous to health. Same thing with skincare, nice skin looks better aesthetically but there is health component too.

I really love lifestyle advice for healthy skin. Nothing to do with collagen, but back in the day, I went to a doctor in Russia for help with acne, they gave me a what-to-do-about-acne leaflet, which was full of diet, exercise, gut health, and stress management advice. And only towards the bottom did it say, “if you really want to, you can try a topical treatment such as Skinoren (azelaic acid product sold over the counter in Russia at 15% and 20%).” I appreciate a well-rounded approach like that.

I appreciate that you mentioned the word "size" of the food items. Americans have this obsession over big sized food items unlike any other culture. I remember seeing a video where people compared all the food items in McDonald's in Japan and the US. Interestingly, the burgers and fries are mostly the same size with very similar calorie counts, but what's drastically different is the size of the soda. In Japan the soda size is tiny compared to the US. I've also seen mini sized canned sodas and mini donuts in France as well. Both Japan and France have amazing food and sweets. The key is, no secret, moderation. It's something that we all know but tend to forget. We don't have to live by the books. Don't feel guilty for eating unhealthy food, instead, congratulate yourself if you're able to reduce your consumption even if it's just by a bit, treat yourself occasionally, and slowly you'll get to a healthier place.

None of these foods "1-7", are part of my (Australian) diet, apart from the odd glass of wine with a meal or at a party/event. However, the Australian sun exposure is an ongoing challenge in dealing with sun damage avoidance. I have a pescatarian, lacto-ovo diet, wear sunscreen, and cover up in the sun. I'm 58 and have Anglo-Saxon freckly skin, which living in Australian has been a challenge, yet my efforts and your advice Dr Dray, are paying off, as I get comments that I look younger than I actually am.

Ya, "all things in moderation". That's a tough one to figure out. For one person, that means 2-3 per year, and cakes and cookies are included in that count. For the next person, it means 1 per week PLUS they are considering the cookies and cakes as each being in seperate categories from the donuts and each other. I'm being serious with this comment. It's confusing out there!

Thank you for always being transparent! As a scientist, I appreciate when you mentioned that studies are not conclusive. There are many famous dietitians, and even some doctors on youtube who say "do that" or "don't do that" based on ONE study. It really gets me that they say these opinions as general truths, and then ordinary people form opinions based on that, and/or adjust their lives. Sometimes even if several studies confirm something, it still doesn't need to apply to every person (depending on the topic of course), and then come to the study which says it is not like that. People are complex beings, and the results can depend on the test group and their life habits, genetics, diet, health state...although there are things that are known (!) I think the best is to try it out and listen to your body and make it balanced and not extreme (unless you health requires it).

I love potato chips (which some interestingly have some good fats even though they're not good) and I found that for me the best way to "portion control" is to either buy the small bags or to pour some chips into a small bowl and eat them in another room. I'll be less likely to overeat them than when I was just eating them straight out of the bag and could finish the whole bag in one sitting

The donut part was hard to hear 🥲 but the rest of it made me glad I've given up mammals. I used to looove hot dogs and bacon and it's been hard giving them up but this adds another reason why I'm glad I did.

These tips were great! Fortunately, I'm the person who can't eat dinner without vegetables and could live on oatmeal and boiled or steamed broccoli, but I have incredibly sweet tooth. Does anyone have some tips how to reduce eating sweets? That would be greatly appreciated.
