The Yakama Indians have lived in the Washington Yakima Valley, where they hunt, fish and gather today like their ancestors, since time immemorial. The traditions of Yakama people are a proud and sacred heritage that is passed down from generation to generation. This practice is prevalent in the Wheeler family. Delbert Wheeler Sr., the patriarch of the Wheeler family, was a tough man. He was a golden glove boxer, rodeo rider, entrepreneur and a deadly hunter. His love of the outdoors and surviving on your own in the mountains and the traditions of the Yakama people were passed down to his kids, Kamiakin and Derrick.

Proud to be raised in Yakima and friends of the Yakama people.. lived in Yakima 74-98.. I'm Navajo. My mother bought a home in Yak and she worked BIA in Toppenish... We knew many family members of the tribe.. it's very beautiful and sacred to be up in their mountains.. rich in healthy of Life. I'm very proud to been part of the earth at that time, it's still in me. I live in Colorado now. Had to be close to waters and mountains... Amen

I used to survey wooded areas for Wheeler logging, especially the old growth were the saddest to survey bc I would never hear the same sounds, certain owls follow those old growth forests, sad to say sometimes it did make me cry. I practiced the old way of praying before I entered the closed area, in that I was told she would always look out for me while I was there. (Kutsiyaya)(miigwetch)🤙

Our traditions, our language must continue! Those who walked before us endured many struggles for our people to let it die now.

Great film!!! I feel more modern day hunters ideals are similar to Native Americans of our past, respect and care for the land and the animals that inhabit them

No idea what the hell you are talking about!!! They are destroying elk populations off their reservation!!! They have slain large groups of elk as well as leave meat to rot so they can sell antlers and so called native art to idiots who buy them and therefore support their poor management and disrespect of these beautiful animals!!!

@@johnhancock7746 although that is incredibly sterotypical considering there are over 500 recognized tribes in the U.S. who have thier own methods of game and land management. That aside I also said (of our past) in reference to the respect of the forest and those that inhabit it.

I am Mi'kmaq First Nation and the treaties we signed several generations ago are still legal binding contracts today. We secured a right to hunt and fish the way our ancestors did by signing a valid peace treaty with the new comers to North America.

so full of crap!!! Hunt with a bow and arrow and only hunt game that was around at the time. NOT ELK, an introduced game animal in Yakima valley! I have seen plenty examples of Native Americans wasting meat for antlers! So much for using the whole animal and being one with nature!

@@johnhancock7746 I do hunt with both a hunting spear and a bow and arrow. I don't need a AR10 with a 20 round mag to kill any animal North America has to offer. I use almost every part of every animal I hunt and kill.

@@davidmcdonald654 If you are telling the truth then that is awesome and good for you!!! However not all members of the Yakama nation share your same views as they are hunting elk year long and I have seen, and heard, of many instances where elk are killed and meat wasted for their antlers to be sold for a few dollars.
