Suffering because of lack of material wealth is difficult… but the suffering from a lack of love is far worse. Loretta and Dolly both make sure we know about the love they were raised with in their autobiographical songs.

My mother (born in 1947 and the youngest of 5 children) has told me stories of not having shoes in the summertime. She and her family would pick cotton in order to earn enough to buy a pair of shoes and a few clothes for each child before the start of the fall school year. They lived in a small house on Will's Creek (near Fort Payne, Alabama) that had holes in parts of the roof in return for her father tending someone's livestock. He was, also, paid a meager wage for his back breaking work. Some nights her parents wouldn't eat so that she and her siblings could. As rough as it was, she still says that those years on Will's Creek were some of the best in her life.

This was the childhood of my parents: my father in the mountains of SW Va. got 1 pair of shoes in winter, and Xmas for the kids meant a sock filled with nuts, hard candy & the only orange they got all year. My mother in Baltimore shivered while walking many blocks to & from school, and often her mother could only afford to feed her spaghetti with butter & salt. This is why I love them & honor their memories.

Loretta is as country as cornbread. People love her so much because she is just herself and has never tried to pretend to be something that she is not. I forget who the reporter was who was interviewing Loretta years ago but the reporter must have felt that Loretta's country accent meant she was stupid so the reporter felt she was far superior to Loretta and she asked in a condescending tone, "Loretta, do you think you would have gone further in the music industry if not for your accent?" At that time Loretta was about the hottest thing in the industry. She had won many awards, among them, Female Vocalist of the Year, Song of the Year, Album of the Year and Entertainer of the Year. She also had the honor of having her record, Coal Miner's Daughter, turned into a movie. I don't know how much further she could have gone because she already had reached the very top. My brother is a huge fan of Loretta's and he heard that she was coming to Kentucky (where she was from and where my brother currently lives) and he determined that while she was that close to him he was going to go see her in concert. He called for a ticket a couple of days after they went on sale and the lady told him that because of the massive number of tickets that had been sold, Loretta was actually doing TWO shows in the same city in Kentucky (I forget where she was appearing) and that ALL the tickets for both shows were sold out and had sold out within a couple of hours of going on sale. This is how hot she was and then that smart aleck reporter insinuated that her southern accent was holding her back. Loretta could have mentioned the awards she had won and her sold-out concerts and the movie that had been made of her life but instead she just smiled at the reporter and said in her deepest, most southern accent, "WHUT AAACENT?"

This song was her first ever recorded song and her husband who was also her manager then ( she was married at 14 I believe ) took her around to country radio stations all over the south getting them to play the song and give an interview and that is how she got her start and she toured with Patsy Cline who became her friend and mentor. I definitely recommend seeing the movie.

Growing up in a "3" bedroom single wide trailer. Quotation mark is due to the fact that 2 of those bedrooms were basically cubicles. Mom, Dad and 5 children. Like Loretta, barefoot in the summer, check last years shoes to see if the younger fit them yet for school, if not, buy the cheapest shoes we could find. Hand me downs, and some clothes that mom sewed herself. Mom would show us how to create and care for a vegetable garden. When my dad was home long enough (over the road truck driver), we went hunting, and between the two of them, they made sure that, in the worst of times, we would have the knowledge to still be able to provide food for the table. We also went hiking, camping, swimming at the lake... Lot's of good memories growing up with very little money.. Dolly Parton said in her song Coat of Many Colors, "one is only poor Only if they choose to be". My family was most definitely not poor..... Thoughts, Prayers, Love

My grandparents were sharecroppers. My grandmother told me that they sharecrop pecans and lived in the orchards under a lean-to shed. Truthfully, they lived outdoors and slept in the lean-to shed, because it wasn’t big enough to actually live in. They cooked over an open fire and wash their clothes by hand and had their first baby there. She said it was the happiest time of her life…because of the simplicity and love.

My father and his siblings grew up picking cotton. Luckily, when my grandparents married, my Granny's parents gifted them a one room shack and 16 acres. By the time I was born, a kitchen, bathroom and 2 bedrooms had been added. My Granny lived in that house until 1999 when she had to go into a nursing home. The house was finally taken down in 2005 & one of my cousins built a small house on the property. We should keep these stories alive.

My mother was born in 1942 in a house up Swisher Holler. The house had no running water or electricity, and it was so cold the night she was born they lit a wood oven, opened the door and put her in a bread pan with some clean towels to keep her warm. Next to Loretty Lynn, my mama was a city slicker.

Now you should watch the movie "Coal Miners Daughter" released in 1980 starring Sissy Spacek and Tommy Lee Jones. Sissy Spacek won an Academy Award and a Golden Globe Award for Best Actress and the movie also a Golden Globe Award for Best Motion Picture - Musical or Comedy. It's the true story of country music singer Loretta Lynn from her early teen years in a poor family and getting married at 15 (and having 4 kids by the age of 19) to her rise as one of the most influential country musicians.

You said Loretta was the truth of country music…have you listened/reacted to The Pill? If not, you really should. I grew up on Loretta Lynn, she was my mom’s favorite when I was a kid. Going into teenage and adult years, I mostly stopped listening to country. Lately I’ve been been getting into the older country, again, that I grew up on…Loretta, Dolly, Barbara Mandrel, Hank Williams Jr., Willy Nelson, Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, Alabama, Statler Brothers, etc. Its a trip, listening with “new ears”, realizing how groundbreaking they were, especially Loretta.
