There should be a lot more alien Captains. It's one of the reasons I really liked that Saru became the Discovery Captain.

I would argue that Sisko is actually a true human. Both his parents are human, his mother was just controlled by the "prophet".

The people in Star Trek be some freaks, Dax be like "Warf broke my pelvis." Bashir be like "must've been a rough night." Everybody just winks at each other...

We only see Human dominated ships (budget reasons) but in Universe most races have their own starfleet ships because of things like climate, temperature, and gravity is different for each race. Example some ships are only Vulcans, they have a higher avg temp aboard the ships, meanwhile the Andorian ships are slightly colder. Its also suggested in some media that some ships have less and even greater gravity.

I would point out that historically, most societies on Earth frowned on miscegenation. Those individuals who were products of it, had a hard time finding places they fit in. One place that tended to be more accepting were various navies, particularly Her Majesty's Navy upon which a lot of Star Trek is based. This theme is born out frequently with Spock where we see he didn't fit in on Vulcan or Earth very well. Star Fleet was a place he eventually found acceptance and I believe that was very important for him.

You know technically Vulcans and Romulans are more like different ethnicities than separate species. Native Americans and Europeans had separated longer than Vulcans and romulans yet we still consider them part of the same human species (unless you're from the Victorian era)

I think my favourite hybrid character might be Naomi Wildman. She's just so happy and content all the time! A genuine positive child whose main flaw was she didn't actually want Voyager's journey to end. Come to think of it, all five Voyager children were great characters, and I wish they had been explored more. Naomi shone in "Bliss," and "The Haunting of Deck Twelve" was a great opportunity to explore the personalities of all five kids. I wish they had made an episode where the kids had to band together to save the day, I think the young actors could have really pulled it off!

I think the two biggest problems would be mating rituals and pheromone production. For example, male cats are known to bite on the back of a female cats neck rather aggressively. A similar action on a human would cause severe bleeding and / or permanent damage.

Tuvix was a hybrid being created as the result of a transporter accident on the USS Voyager, combining Lieutenant Tuvok, Neelix, their uniforms, and an orchid in 2372.

Spock is awesome. Alexander Rozhenko is a hybrid (3/4 Klingon, 1/4 human), and I really like that character's story arc. If I could get it on with an alien, I would have fun with a green Orion girl. Green skin is the sexiest of all skin color options on aliens. Me likey.

Spock is still my favorite hybrid, the original Spock of course. There’s been other good portrayals but Nimoy was the best. As to whether I’d be willing to try with a Trek alien, Vulcans definitely. Maybe a hot Klingon but those seem pretty rare. Bajorans, Trills (just have to NOT think about the slug) Orions…yeah. Not Betazoids, my wife already seems to know what I’m thinking, I don’t need a woman that actually does.

Something I've found intriguing about the idea of hybrids in Star Trek is the possibilities presented with being one. I was a 10 years old when TNG came out and I would fantasize about being a hybrid. I thought it would be cool to be a Vulcan/Klingon hybrid- the strength and intelligence of a Vulcan with the robustness of a Klingon was appealing.

I'd expect the most common reaction to eating alien food would be similar to consuming Olestra: mostly harmless, but problematic on the Enterprise with the ship's lack of any obvious toilet facilities. It's conceivable that species from different planets could find each other sexually attractive, but having offspring together wouldn't work. In our own species's history, we mingled with Denisovans and Neanderthals, but they were closely related to us. Even if an alien species uses the DNA molecule, and that's not guaranteed, their genes would be too different from ours.

I really like the idea hybrids in Star Trek in general. I feel that I know Spock the best, and therefore relate to him more than the others, but appreciate them all. I feel that Diana Troi is probably the least intriguing because I don't feel that she has the same challenge as the others- her physical appearance allows her to pass as fully human, which is something unique (as far as I can recall) among hybrids in the Star Trek franchise.

When Star Trek first came out (TOS), they had a small budget. Special effects were low budget. Actors played aliens. Since all actors are human, the aliens all had a head, 2 arms and 2 legs.

They weren’t a main character, but Jadzia Dax’s child was going to be a hybrid (Trill-Klingon). Thanks to “ovarian resequencing enzymes” which were provided so readily and nonchalantly that one has to wonder if that’s a standard treatment for any couple seeking kids in Trek. Even then, she got pregnant much quicker than expected. Given Alexander arose from just one encounter, perhaps Worf is especially fertile… Also, I would add opposable thumbs to the list of advantageous humanoid characteristics. The other primates without them have their tool usage severely curtailed, and opposable thumbs render many tools optional rather than necessary too.

If aliens are like some of the creatures we have, they might not have the uhh stuff we do - or it might be really... strange. Like my word.

Babylon 5 oddly only has one on-screen hybrid, Delenn (Minbari/Human) and it was through an advanced genetic engineering process. Though hers and John Sheridan's offspring and descendants are hybrids themselves since John is human.

Given that Vulcans have copper based blood, and their heart (hearts?) is in a different location...combining genes with a human would almost always result in a miscarriage. My thoughts on this is that "interspecies" individuals is simply a method used by Gene Roddenberry to teach acceptance of _interracial_ individuals.

I could never pursue a relationship with a member of an alien species. Hell, I can’t even get a human girlfriend.

I'm just going to put this out here: I think the reason for so many hybrids in Star Fleet is because they seem to do a lot of screwing. Also, the Klingon redundancies would problem make them more viable for hybridizations.

All of the hybrids are extremely fascinating and characters because as you say from a story perspective they are have a great conflict. If the aliens on the show look human then I can find them attractive but I would never find a Frengi attractive or a Klingon.

Since I was a teenage girl back in the 70's, Spock has always been my favorite.

There was an episode of TNG where Deanna is talking about coming back from interspecies getting along conference and joking about the sexually forward lecturer.

i often wonder about this when i play Stellaris and go with Xena-Compatability and i wonder if someone would be considered a sex-freak if their significant other was a giant starfish or sentient mushroom.

As a man born of multiple races I can relate with the difficulty felicitated on screen. It is challenging to both accept your origins given how each side is seen. The ironic part is that the difficulty comes from others within your own social circle and not that of outside forces. I to this day have to overcome stereotypes made against me just to be seen as equal, and even then it’s just coined off as “one of the good ones”.

I just noticed that the "Ancient Ancestor" alien is played by the same actress who played the shapeshifter in chief during the Dominion war.

The hybrid characters always appealed to me as I think of myself as a hybrid because of my mixed racial background and genetic throwbacks meaning I don't look like anyone in my immediate family and my mother has said I look like the old people that existed in her Islands before they were conquered and hybridised.

Good exploration of the chemistry. It seems highly unlikely that we would even be able to enjoy the cuisine of other worlds, never mind "other" pleasures ...

Considering just how radically different Klingons are from humans are from Vulcans, the idea that we can interbreed is remarkable.

so the production reason why hybrids are no longer part of crews in the new shows is that they were deliberately (and ingeniously) included in the previous shows in order for those shows to devote entire episodes (or multiple episodes) to exploring the human condition from some distance, like that of a hybrid who straddles both worlds of the humans and of their other half. Spock is a more interesting character because he struggles with the things about his humanity he doesn't like, while his human compatriots value those things about him. Torres is interesting because her Klingon tendencies get in the way of her core competencies, and the writers can have a lot of fun and interesting conversations about what we *want* to be, vs. what we often are in spite of ourselves. and maybe we can even explore how that's ok and sometimes valuable to have a completely different and half-alien perspective. the new shows are not episodic, so it's pointless to include such characters, not to mention the fact that i doubt the writers of the new shows know all that much about the human condition anyway, so it might not even occur to them that it's an interesting topic to explore in this way.

I've seen a few fan projects where Star Trek aliens are reimagined as looking, well, actually alien. Like catlike Bajorans, Betazoids more like an antelope with an elephant's trunk (kind of like a skinny snuffleupagus), or Klingons looking like something out of StarCraft. It's really quite interesting, and one artist said she saw the humanoid alien designs as more like "what you would do if you were trying to portray these aliens with the budget of a high school play". She's not wrong. Considering the difficulty most hybrid animals, even of closely related species like lions and tigers, have in real life, I don't see humans ever successfully reproducing with *any* alien lifeform. To paraphrase Carl Sagan, you're more likely to successfully reproduce with a petunia. I can see *attraction* and sexual acts between different species, sure (humans are creative, and there's no reason to think other sapient species wouldn't be as well). But successfully producing offspring? No way. "The Chase" was bull. It should be regulated to the same episode pile as "Threshold". Maybe interspecies couples could just adopt instead? Nobody ever brings up that possibility, even though Worf was happily adopted by humans.

His mentioning of centaur-like aliens made me immediately think of the Andalites in the Animorphs books. I have the entire book series on my Kindle lol

There was an old interview done with Gene Rodenbury and recorded on a LP record, Inside Star Trek where he is asked about Spock and how he could be half Vulcan and half Human and he speculated that it could have been possible that halfway through the pregancy Spock WAS removed from Amanda's Womb and treated genetically and then reimplanted. ive always had a foundness for Naomi wildmen, however i dont really count seven of nine as a hybrid. she like all borg or former borg are cyborg. while the tech is alien. its not bioloical in nature though it acts on a bioloical scale at least as far as the nano probes are concerned. but it donsnt change the biogly. at most, the borg as far a gentic engineering goes will speed up the development of none adult drones. so they mature to adult hood fast but thats still not injected them with 'alien' dna. though its being theroised the queens are cloned and the borg children we sometimes see on cubes are 'generated' as the collective needs them. likely by combing sperm and eggs harvested from species and combined. when the collective just needs mord bodys and their are no worthy targets near by. we know despite their claims the borg can be choosy when it suits them. if seven of nine or any other fomer drone were to have children (we are unsure if they can or their all stilised by the assimilation process or something esle stops them) with a member of their own species in seven's case human. than the child may have some nano probes carryed over but the child would still be genetically speaking human no less human than anyone with a nono organic implant or replacement limb

Well, not only did TNG provide the common very distant ancestor thing, there's also been a whole number of ancient empires, mysterious energy beings, wormhole aliens, and the like also transplanting and otherwise moving and maybe messing with life all over. One thing I'd expect from real science is that maybe tool-using species might be fairly rare even if intelligence wasn't, so chances are species would tend to interact with more similar species either in terms of cooperation or conflict.

I could see myself interbreeding with a Vulcan

A Kriosan empathic metamorph trained in negotiation would be my desired partner if they found me spousal material (apart from their natural powers) even though I would only be a diplomatic attache. My favorite hybrid would be the last few season version of Troi. (The first couple of seasons were offensive.)

A relationship with an alien? Well it depends on which species of course, but I see no issues at all with Trill, Bajoran, Betazoids, Vulcan, Romulan, and similar well-known species. More shall we say exotic ones, like Ferengi would be..well no thank you. Species like Cardassian or Klingons would be...well perhaps. Why not.

As a published fantasy & sci-fi writer myself, I have human/G.E.L.F. (genetically engineered life form) relationships & offspring, though I've only had human/alien couple who have had a child--it took some tinkering in secret by a First One, who have been around since before the multiverse and other realms of existence. Even the humans who created the G.E.L.F.s in the late 20th/early 21st century got some help from a First One (though they didn't know it at the time). As for Star Trek, I thought Deanna Troi was cool (I actually got to meet Marina Sirtis and she's a riot--very nice lady). Also, Savik, as played by Kirstie Alley. The thing is about the Star Trek hybrid characters, for the most part they don't seem different enough from humans. "Humaliens" some have called them. I think there was a far greater variety of aliens in Babylon 5 Would I want to be in a relationship with an alien or other non-human gal? Heh, I can think of several from among my own characters that I wouldn't mind waking up next to every day. ;)

Star Fleet would be where a mixed person would be meeting other cultures and be more comfortable bridging gaps. A mixed being would have a literal "head" start in the academy and therefore more likely to obtain a higher rank.

Even on Earth you have a wide variety of cultures with different attitudes towards sex. This is especially apparent in events designed to encourage fellowship, such as the Olympic Games. It is said that the athlete's living quarters are basically an orgy that continues throughout the time of the games.

Carl Sagan said that when it comes to human/alien procreation, it would be easier to "cross an elephant with a petunia". (That's why he didn't like Star Trek--he couldn't accept that Mr. Spock was half-human!)

CJ Cherry has some interesting sci-fi concerning this topic.

My theory is based on the Asari from the Mass Effect. Its explained if i recall that they have a universal genetic material, that allows them to use any other genetic material to create an asari offspring. Wouldn't it be possible that there is an adaptablegenetic material that behaves this way, and by the 24th century, its discovered and reproduced as a therapy for them to increase the odds. After all its seen many times that there is Genome Resequencing to be able to change a person's dna to match a species, so its not too far off that maybe they have a "stem cell" to solve genetic material exchange.

The Culture novels of Ian Banks have genofixing which established the potential for inter-species breeding. If they just want sex then body modification is trivial. Not everybody makes use of this potential, some people prefer to be more human-basic for aesthetic or philosophical reasons, while some are so altered from that humanoid-basic state that any interbreeding would be impossible.
