THEATER TALK, the two-time Emmy Award-winning series, reunites its team of prominent theater journalists to assess the 2018-2019 theater season and discuss this year's TONY Awards race. Taped at the Bruno Walter Auditorium in The New York Public Library for the Performing Arts at Lincoln Center, the show's co-hosts Jesse Green, Co-Chief Theater Critic of The New York Times; Jason Zinoman, Comedy and Theater Critic for The New York Times and THEATER TALK Executive Producer Susan Haskins are joined by Ben Brantley, also Co-Chief Theater Critic of The New York Times; and Jan Simpson, Theater Correspondent for Broadway Radio.com; to discuss highlights of the past season.
Also on the program, THEATER TALK’s experts predict the TONYs for this year. Adam Feldman, Theater and Dance Editor for TimeOut/New York; Michael Musto, the Weekly Columnist for NewNowNext.com; and Elisabeth Vincentelli, Co-Host of Three on the Aisle and Theater Critic for both The New York Times and The New Yorker; join co-hosts Green and Haskins to explain who will win the coveted awards and why.
This program is made possible in part by The New York City Department of Cultural Affairs.

how can that lady say that hadestown has no story, when its literally retelling one of the most iconic greek tales about love, sacrifice, and youth, in a fresh and completely new way. the music is soulful swampy jazz with so much diversity in voices and power. patrick page's booming voice, eva with her powerhouse belts, amber with her growls and soul, and andre himself lights up the stage; the stage itself is enough to win it a tony. i really dont know if she understood what she was watching. to dislike something, alright, but to overlook the glaring storytelling aspect is just ignorant.

God, that woman who hated Hadestown was annoying. It's fine if she doesn't get it..but the constant tsking, eye-rolling when anyone said a positive thing is inappropriate and unprofessional.

Well, if we're going to go all unpopular and throw hate over Hadestown (which I loved), then I can say something about Hamilton. Didn't love it. Yup. In fact, I found it exhausting and over hyped. And Elizabeth? Hadestown IS an original show. It's a new concept and production of an age old story that was never made for stage before - or at least not THIS way. It's not a Disney movie redone for stage. It's not an old VHS movie made for stage. It's not a revival of an old show. It's not a jukebox musical. It's a new friggin show. On a more positive note: So glad Theater Talk is back! Love you, Jesse Green and Michael Musto.

Mmmmmm the prom was more original than hadestown though... Cuz hadestown despite having original ideas and concept it's still based on the myth of orpheus and eurydice. The prom on the otherhand , despite feeling like a safe musical, is as original as you can get down to the book and score

Elizabeth is a strange opinion (as others noted above - how could *anyone* like the utterly anti-Irish incompetent PIRATE QUEEN!?), but I live in dread of the "out-of town presenter" vote who have no concern for QUALITY just "salability" stealing *any* Tonys from the only (nominated) new musical this season which *deserved* its Best Musical nomination. They are right that HEAD OVER HEELS was head and shoulders over every other musical this season except HADESTOWN and the OKLAHOMA! revival, but then Philip Glass's remarkably melodic score for KING LEAR certainly deserved nomination over THE PROM or TOOTSIE (as did BE MORE CHILL for Best Musical over them *or* AIN'T TOO PROUD)! TOOTSIE' terrible book (compared to the MOVIE) will almost certainly win the Tony solely because it's funny. The Best Play category this year is the most competitive - although THE FERRYMAN will probably win (God protect us from a victory for WHAT THE CONSTITUTION MEANS TO ME which, while I agree with every word of it politically, simply isn't a *play*! It's a piece of performance art, and a decent one, but they don't have a category for that.

I personally thought it was a bit of a slog - I didn't like the score in general. But it clearly connected people, and the diversity of shows and tastes on Broadway are what make it so wonderful.

Ben Brantley dead panning at the only POC we saw today and asking her the race question explicitly is clear indication of how out of touch he is. We’re having a discussion about the politics of the theater and how it needs to continue to evolve toward women and POC. Critics circles need to do the same.

I will say tony voters last year went for “art” in best musical (well deserved, bands visit was amazing) but are we forgetting that DEH won over Great Comet? It’s never a sure thing. I hope Hadestown takes it, wouldn’t be mad at Tootsie taking it tho.
@lc53788
@lc53788 5 жыл бұрын
Rob Williamson DEH had the power of relevancy and relatability behind its core message which made it really strong, and it also spilled over into mainstream culture more. Same with Hamilton, spilled into mainstream culture. The Bands Visit was definitely art only (but a lot of the contenders last year were weak imo ). I’m glad Hadestown won, it sits in the neat pocket of art and having a meaningful message that transcends the show.

Elizabeth liked THE PIRATE QUEEN and hated HADESTOWN......Oh My. I love these conversations. They are intelligent and hilarious, especially that guy on the far left with the Pink Jacket (Michael Musto). His summation as to why THE FERRYMAN will win Best Play is gut wrenchingly funny (It has geese, a baby, is British and 25 hours long.) Ok, I’m paraphrasing but he is quite the character. I think he should have a one man show on Broadway.

It's a little disappointing to hear the views of individuals in a position of power (as critics), to give so much credit to Tootsie. A piece that we should have never produced in this day and age. You wonder why "golden age" or classical musical theatre has died out, it's because it's not good. Tootsie has so many problems attached to its subject matter, but hey at least its a good time musical right? Also, learn the damn names of the poc actors you're talking about, they deserve respect, and I can't believe how flippant you're being, it's totally unacceptable.
