I feel like Utawarerumono will always be one of my favorite stories ever, just hearing Kimi Ga Tame (instrumental or with lyrics) start playing is enough to get me emotional

but the game ending feels incomplete tho.. it's like a very weird af open ending that negate all the character relationship you built through the series.. at the very least we know what happen to hakuoro (kuon's father and they can reunite with his full harem.. well except kuon's mother since she is already dead) but point it it got it's closure and it satisfy my years of cliffhanger ever since i played the old utawarerumono.. 10 years ago or so.. problem here is for our supposed to be main mc where he fill hakuoro's spot and they just left it that way while all the heroines tried their best to look for him god knows where.. i mean what kind of ending is that :(

@@TheAugustHail Just perfect when any come on when playing the visual novels :) I also recommend playing Utawarerumono Zan 1 and 2, especially Zan 2 final boss fight :) The game is more action based design but it is still epic :) Thank you again for doing a review of the series.

I just found your channel and I love what you're doing, especially with these year-end recaps. The notes at the beginning of each title are excellent. The way you're doing it is brilliant. I've made a playlist of your reviews that interest me most, and it's all because of these yearly summaries. Keep it up. I've smashed that bell. Edit: Oh, just one note. The text summaries are really, really great, but no one can possibly read them in the time they're displayed and for me trying to pause was also almost impossible. Just display them for a few more seconds and we can get to our spacebar in time.

Regarding Raging Loop, Revelation Mode really saves the final reveal for me and makes it less sloppy.

So happy you like Flowers, especially Automne. I don't entirely agree with the notion that Hivers tone is jarring, as Automne is just as if not more depressing throughout in my opinion. I also loved the Ringo and Nerine alternate routes in Automne, but they are a bit short to be fair. But that's just my opinion and I'm delighted you like the series! Hope you review KnS2 soon :)

Automne felt more melancholy in tone simply because it focused purely on Yuzuriha's tormented emotions, while Hiver's felt more bleaker due to the implication of grim topics. As for KnS2, I'm really looking forward to that one~!

@@TheAugustHail Hiver surely has bleakness to it, but I think that this clashing of tones only further elevates the lighthearted episodes and genuinely happy moments. Or, rather, it's the interplay between coldness and warmth that makes the atmosphere more textured and thick, and allows adjacent ideas and themes to shine even brighter. As Suoh might put it, outside it's freezing cold, darkness and desolation that winter season brings, but inside there's the warmth of human bonds, trust and love.

As a recommendation, Katawa Shoujo is a classic for me on the same level of Saya no Uta, as in, it has an weird premise and is, surprisingly extremely good. Also it's free so that's always a plus. I recommended it to a friend as his introduction to VN and he loved it. I will be playing G-senjou no Maou as I finally found it again, and I remember loving it like, 8 years ago when I played it. Thanks for the recommendations!

Saya no Uta is my favorite VN of all time, but I'm baffled by the hype surrounding Katawa Shoujo. I found the writing so painfully banal and boring. There's zero player agency even though in theory the game has choices and branching paths, because the choices amount to "there's a bifurcation in the road ahead. Do you want to turn left or right?" "Whatever" "Sorry, I don't have that option" "Ok, turn right" "Right, ok. You come across a gas station bathroom with a glory hole. You start to und..." "Whoa whoa, hold on, I don't wan..." "You undress and have sex with 20 men. Thanks for playing!"

@@AbyssalManta I see your point, there is like 1 or 2 choices per chapter and they only work to "select" your route. I even think that the MC made WRONG choices, specially with Hanako route. What I personally enjoy out of Katawa Shoujo is getting into a world that I literally know nothing of. Should people with disabilities be pitied and given special treatment? Should they be treated like any other person to avoid making them feel alienated? How do people talk to you when you have a condition? What is it like to be ostracized, either directly or indirectly due to it? Hell, how do you talk with someone who lost all of their family and their own survival is a constant reminder of that? I liked KS less due to it's quality as a masterpiece, and more due to it giving me something to think about that I never cared or though about. In a way similar way as to why I liked Saya no Uta as I never thought HOW would living with a mental disorder would feel like (and I know there is WAY more than that, but that was what interested me the most).

@@Jonsoner I can see that it can be appealing in that regard; KS has about as unique and surprising a premise as it gets. To this day, I still have trouble believing it got made at all. It deals with themes that are... well, "taboo" in entertainment. For all players enjoy "edgy", "grimdark" stuff (I love it), there are some things that are TOO thorny, hit TOO close to home, make people TOO uncomfortable. In that regard, there's nothing else like it, and there probably never will be.

Wow, just a B for Kara No Shoujo? That is insane to me. KnS is easily a S for me, and its in my top 3 visual novels. If anyone is curious about it, just go read it. Its one of the most beautiful and comfy visual novels ever, with one of the most well written mystery stories. Beautiful art and OST as well. Theres a 100% guide on the internet that helps you get all the endings. As someone who has been reading visual novels for like 10 years now I seriously consider KnS a MUST read. The sequel is good as well.

Well it really depends on the readers preference, it's easily an S for me. Tbh even if people don't like murder mystery all that much you'd still appreciate this vn just from how gorgeous the art, music and atmosphere is. Also, people seem to forget, this is an eroge so naturally there'll be h-scenes even if you think it's unnecessary or weird bc it involves younger girls than mc.

Love your videos and what a great list! Even though I'm a VN fan I can only read so much as I like other types of games as well, especially JRPGs so it's a pain to find time to play many VNs I'd love to try but among those you mentioned, I can vouch for Raging Loop and Song of Saya too. They are truly memorable stories. I still haven't finished Dead End Aegis but I'm having a good time as well.

golly gee that's a lot of visual novels apologies for the random suggestion, but i'd recommend taking a look at Slow Damage if you haven't already; I don't think it made a big splash outside of BL-centric communities but it's got really strong presentation, a really nice atmosphere and a great emotional core and def deserves a bit more attention

If I am not wrong, in Gore Screaming show only the fanservice parts are written by Ueda Metawo, the main plot is by Kusaka Matsuri.

I honestly loved this list but wish I could see the games within the tiers get sorted (unless they are and you just didn't say that.) Especially since you put a LOT into the B tier. I do understand however it is hard to properly rank them comparatively. Very solid tierlist overall and you have an amazing profile picture!

Thanks for the recs! I appreciate this flash-review summary type of video, since I usually like going in blind but would still like to see the general "feel" of what I'm getting into. That being said, seeing as you've reviewed some female-targeted VNs in the past, I wondered if you ever tried Taisho x Alice? It's the first Otome Game I've ever played, and the story has blown me away with it's clever twist, really good overarching narrative and genius writing. The story also managed to wrap up the previous episode's routes nicely and connect it in a way I would never expect that by the end, I don't think there's any plot holes or any plot points left unexplained at all. Episode 1 & 2, while feels like a stand-alone route or even universe in some case, has a few scenes that makes you think "Huh that's weird" and doesn't really get brought up anymore even after you get the "Happy End". I promise you though, all of that will starts making sense in Ep 3 and get explained directly in the Epilogue. The only complain I have about the series is how the hints and foreshadowing they gave prior to Episode 3 is way too miniscule and can be easily dismissed as "bad writing", and how the MC is unvoiced even though she has more balls than some of male protags. Also this is a bit of controversial topic (and not exactly related to the VN itself), but I also dislike the localization a lot. They americanized too many things. I kinda get changing Rakugo jokes since that's not something western audience would understand, but changing foods, aging up characters (when this isn't even an R-rated game) along with changing some lines so it could be "funnier" is a bit...distasteful for me. That being said, it's a really good VN and I just want to see more people opinion about it. I don't know how is it in comparison to other Otomes since TaiAli is the first one I've played, but from what I've seen in the Otome subreddit, people seems to think it's not as romance-focused as others (even though Romance IS the main driving plot, maybe people think there's not enough 'courting' scenes?) and has an "eroge-like humour". Take that as you will.

I've been debating taking a look at Taishou Alice. It's one I'm definitely interested in, just need to reserve some time for it... Unfortunately otome and yaoi visual novels tend to not perform well, considering my mostly male audience..

@@TheAugustHail I guess I kinda understand the prejudice against Otomes as people mostly think of it as "Dating sims for girls", and not "VNs with Female POV and Male LIs". I would probably still have that bias too, had my sister not asked me to tag along as she played through Red's route. Turns out Otome Game doesn't always mean female dating sims and they can be really good. Currently playing Bustafellows because of your review, and I found it a lot of fun!

My favourite is Meteor World Actor. Although it has a lot of flaws, I really like the four main male characters. Badge and Dagger was a disappointment but honestly I like the four main male characters so much that no matter how shit the story is, I can't help but like this visual novel.

she is at ruka side, but too keep him alive. since ruka really not think the side effect of his power too she need to restrict it. but yea its kinugasa who like to write an episodic story so we probally see the conclusion of ryusei actor at 3 or 4 tittles.

Kara no shouju a B? I strongly have to disagree that's, for the true route alone, a S. Yes it has strong fan service in the side routes but they're optional, also best soundtrack for a VN.

thanks for the review. its my first time see your review and i kinda agree most of it. if you ever play game zero escape raging loop is smillar like that maybe thats make me feels smillar and enjoy the mistery. tho yea ryusei actor is like akatsuki no goei so knowing kinugasa the climax probally will be at 3rd game or even 4th knowing how good he write a episodic story with class room elite now. but as the romance..... man i kinda agree but summer pocket who done in this year kinda hit my feels too.

Have you played Fata Morgana? I figured if you like cyanotype, You really need to check it out, It's kinda dark but not overly edgy. The art style is really unique, half of the OST has an angelic vocal tracks, but probably the thing that most stand out is that the characters felt real, mostly devoid of the stereotypical whimsy anime quirks.

I just finished Fata Morgana and wow it is one of, if not the best, VN I've ever read. I'm still shaking in my seat trying to process what I just went through. The August Hail will 100% love Fata Morgana based on how much he loves Cyanotype Daydream and Utuwarerumono.

The Common Route is the first arc that happens. The Heroine Route happens after the Common Route which focuses on a particular heroines after picking choices that prefer her in the Common Route

Great information! But I have to disagree with your rating of Meteor World Actor. Unrefined and unpolished are the last words I would use to describe the beautiful art style of this game. And while I agree with your statement that there's tacked on romance, I don't think it's fair to criticize the story for not wrapping up any plotlines, as that wasn't the purpose of this VN. This VN gave fans of the series more of what they wanted, and is used to smoothly transition the story into the third game.

Akatsuki no Goei below the SOL Eroges physically hurt me. I definitely agree that the first game was kind of weak and it's something that you gotta evaluate as an entire series. I did kind of think the forbidden district was a bit edgy, and probably served as his inspiration for COTE's White Room but I didn't think it was unnecessary as it's what's realistic about an anarchy. Personally, the third installment was the best for me and in my opinion had less plot holes than it's counter part Meteor World Actor. Regardless, both MCs are S tiers for me Also have you tried out Kin Iro Loveriche? It was one of my most liked SOL romances recently, the art is gorgeous and the routes weren't stellar like you'd expect from a typical SOL Eroge but it was still good enough. I'd personally put it above KoiKari There's also Otome Domain, the crossdressing romance. I know this won't be for everyone but it definitely will exceed some expectations as a typical crossdressing school eroge.

Whenever the next parts of Akatsuki no Goei gets translated, I'll cover those as well. However, it's still a standalone, very similar to the Prelude to the Fallen for the Utawarerumono, and thus I graded it as such. I thought the whole backstory with Tsuki was just a big eww all together, which is why i was bit fearful about Volume 0 of COTE. I read Kin Iro Loveriche last year and I believe I scored it a S. I enjoyed pretty much everything about it, and it brought it all together in the end nicely thematically. Currently reading Otome Domain right now~!

Nice review. Well, Kimagure Temptation is as much eye candy as Bishoujo Mangekyo I would say. And similar to it in terms kind of lackluster plot. I was told that Kimagure shocks you as much as DDLC, but alas, it is nowhere near it (and it is not because I expected it, it’s just overall lighter and not as touchy, thanks to poorly build up characters and no emotional attachment to them). But Annelise is beauty for sure. As for Starless - it is an Empress game... so yeah, a lot of fetish and very niche h-scenes. I mean, there are companies that do even more hardcore stuff like Clockup or Cyclet, but we don’t go there. Anyway, Starless is not most “impressive” work of Empress, idk if you want to check it, probably not if I understand your review right lol. Saya no Uta is indeed masterpiece, it kinda makes you wonder what you will do in MC shoes. When no one understands you, no one is affectionate towards you and if you tell anyone about what you truly see with own eyes - they probably run away from you as from some monster. So yeah, Saya was a gift for such unlucky man. Anyway. I wonder if there are VNs close to old KID stuff (infinity series), I am trying to find something similar but alas - the standards are too high, and I already read S;G. Man, if I ever find something similar to Never7 (or Remember11, but Remember11 was just unfinished piece, even though good and intriguing) I will be on cloud nine

I'm new to the whole VN world. Played my 1st recently Doki Doki Literature Club plus and my 2nd, 7 days of Rose. Got me hooked. How do u play those novels u mention? By computer? I'm considering buying a Steam Deck for the VN games. Now I'm really interested in the Amatsutsumi u mentioned but it says it's not available on steam. If we are talking about Saya no Uta or Gore Screaming show, they were both re-released on gog with uncensored patches. To be honest I wouldn't rate Dead end Aegis as high as Gore Screaming Show, because after first shock is too much dull and all finals are only making you think "wtf authors? Are you real? That's not a fairy tale!"

Kara no Shoujo it's great. But, if you want to play it, my adwise leave hope at all. No-one will be saved your beloved characters? Dead and GONE. There are no Good ending, true end included. But Game is still Great, I would give it 8,5\10. And I don't give 10 to games.

Is there a way to skip the RPG aspects of it? I suggest checking out the What a Beautiful series, Shikkoku no Sharnoth was a blast, and voice acting was great as well.
