This is the first video in the "Bach Trumpet Restoration Project". In this video, I get started, but I do not get very far because of some problems with stuck tuning slides.
Here is the link to my website where you can view repair tools and instruments that I have for sale. 👇👇👇

It’s beautiful to see a Bach trumpet get back to life. Hope this project is completed.

NEVER could I have guessed that a trumpet made within the last lifetime could have had its valve stems completely corrode away!

One thing good on this video is that he shows different ways to unstuck valves. Good pedagogy.

Think I start buying old junkers and restoring them.I do stainless restoration ( vintage car trim ) taking all dents out of Bach TR 300 .Beat to crap.Oh man first attempt and I was so proud how good it was looking and I got greedy and had wooden handle clamped in vise and going to town on couple luttle dents deep within not realizing the back end of wooden stick tearing hell outta things that I already had perfect 🤬 I called myself every rotten name I could think of lol One thing for sure when I do something stupid like that it never happens again !

this is amazing. you feel the same sort of vicarious relief as watching doctor pimple popper with a particularly nasty problem. i'm still amazed this cost actual money ... but it was a very good instinct that it would be a good video. it gladdens the heart of people hoarding hopeless old items

Gosh, that corrosion is a shocker. Many years ago my father and I worked on outboard motors and from time to time we'd see similar corrosion in the cooling systems. I wonder if this instrument might have been left outdoors for a while, perhaps even at a seaside location? Very enjoyable video Art - it has inspired me to clean up my own trumpet today!

Have you ever tried using a ultrasonic tank with solvent on something like this stuck trumpet?

Yikes! That's one nasty trumpet! I've had decent luck unsticking slides using PB Blaster and a heat gun. I let the PB soak for a few hours or overnight, then heat the slide and let it cool. Another squirt of PB and a few more heating and cooling cycles. Most of the time that works. Not always, but most of the time. It takes a while, but at least it does no damage to the horn.

Hi Art! The corrosion was so bad. It just deteriorated completely. Wondering what caused such corrosion. Thanks for sharing, this has been very interesting. Have a blessed day!

My, that is one corroded piece of brass! Art, I'm a little surprised that you didn't try some heat along with the penetrating oil. Moving heat along a tube can help 'wick' in some of the penetrating oil if you don't get things to the point you boil or burn the oil. A little more heat cycled over various places and also cause the tubing to expand slightly, possibly starting to break up the corrosion holding the parts together. Obviously you want to avoid breaking solder joints unless you have to, but a fair amount of heat, allowing it to cool, then reheating several times might help.

I my repair practice I’ve used special penetrating oil and heat to free stubborn corroded slides. Unfortunately there are some instruments that are just not worth saving.

I know that for me when pieces are literally turned into dust is when I’d stop and reconsider the amount of effort vs reward. I can’t believe someone got more than fifty cents for this thing on eBay.

@@Gator1699 Just my thought. Salt water destroys all metal given enough time and alloys seem especially vulnerable. Cheers mate.

I can’t believe how much you paid on eBay for this poor soul. My guess is that it was a hurricane Sandy damaged horn. Submerged in salt water for days. The silver finish looks destroyed. But it is interesting watching you work on it and the time and effort you are exerting. Like others I am waiting to see the end result. Cheers
