Very good1 I am very happy with The Coat My Sister got me for Xmas last year, I wear a simple watch not an Apple one, I choose to eat for 30 Minutes each day at work and I brown bag it. I am not near any Fast Food Restaurants so that helps alot. I go through my Budget religiously on Saturday, and I always know when My Bills are due. I live at home with my Mother since My Dad died, you are so right on about folks who can't stand you upstaging them. They brag about places they've been and their cars etc but they are up to the backside in debt.

It allowed us to be able to put 25% down payment on our forever home and it’s the only debt we have and we’re able to to go on vacations every year due to being frugal. My husband and I installed our dream patio and then went out and bought all the stuff you can imagine an awsome patio having; outdoor bar, mini fridge full furniture set. One day we were sitting outside and just decided to become minimalists and sold everything! Our patio is now a couple flower pots, a little solo stove and we use folding camp chairs. It turns out we never used any of that stuff and outdoor fridges collect bugs and debris. Take that first step and stop caring about impressing others.

2 months ago I sold my car and we went down to a one car family because I work from home and I don’t drive that often. My friends and family thought I was crazy. So far it hasn’t been an inconvenience. I also go shopping with my friends and I never buy anything. I enjoy the time out with my friends and I don’t typically get the urge to buy unnecessary items.

My husband had to start working from home when all the lockdowns started about 2 1/2 years ago. About 2 months into the lockdowns his old car broke down. Since he no longer needed to drive to work, we didn't replace the car. He still works from home, and we are still a one car family. Once in awhile it's inconvenient, but for the most part we don't miss the second car.

Talking about returning things after buying them. MY ex-mother in law had a bit of a shopping addiction (which was made worse when not on her meds). Her love language was gift giving and she was the kind of person who'd give you the shirt off her back even if it meant going without on her own. She also had a deep love of the clearance section at Walmart and I can distinctly remember one Christmas where she spent her last dollar on small items from the clearance section at Walmart and ended up not being able to pay for her diabetes and depression medications because she couldn't balance a budget and her son and I having to take her back to Walmart (where she worked mind you) to return Christmas gifts. She was very embarrassed at this and kept apologizing about ruining Christmas but I had to keep reminding her that her having her meds and being healthy was FAR more important than some silly stocking stuffer she bought.

Sometimes when people say they don't entertain because their home isn't good enough, they are really worried about being up to entertaining adequately. Same principle when people say they can't go to certain places because they don't have the clothes to fit in; they could pick up something cheaply at a thrift store. It's sometimes because they feel socially awkward.

This might sound silly but in Asian context it might make sense. I always pack lunch and don’t buy bubble tea or specialty drinks. Bubble tea amongst office workers is a thing in Asia. But paying $4-8 per day for a drink sounds nuts to me, on top of buying takeout that is marked up in the city area. So I bring my own coffee from home or have the free office coffee.

My husband's brother was trying to pick on my husband because we drive cars that he considers older (neither of them are even 10 years old or have over 100k miles on it). We were sitting together with his family and he was making these comments saying how cheap my husband is etc. When my husband decided that would be the perfect time to announce to the family that we decided we to pay for all the meals in the upcoming family vacation. We decided that was something we wanted to do for the family because some of the family members were really making sacrifices for everyone to go. My husband's brother really had no words. 🤣 That was more fun than anything we could had bought with the money in my opinion.

Luckily in our office my supervisor & I have brought our lunch to work for years. But I’m also older now & care less what people think. Even with my 4 year old granddaughter, if she asks for something I simply tell her grandma can’t afford it. She accepts it. She knows if she comes for a sleepover we’re not going shopping. We’re staying home, eating home cooked food, doing crafts or playing outside. I work full time, but my hubby is on a small disability income so $ is tight.

About the family thing… if you grew up in poverty you may feel the urge to hyper save out of fear. Refusing to live in a bigger home, denying yourself things you genuinely want… all in the name of being “financially savvy” as the excuse. In reality, they may fear spending money out of guilt, and later get a high from knowing they own less than people who earn less than them. It’s almost a false sense of financial piety lol and it’s rooted in financial trauma. I’m quite sure this is the case because they brought out their kids… that was 100% a projection of guilt. They’re not happy but don’t want to admit maybe they want the same nice things too, and when done responsibly it’s okay.

So grateful for your advice. I am so grateful also that because I am a Christian, I have a different perspective on letting others opinions have an impact on me. I answer to the Lord for how I spend money. Jesus spoke a lot about people who invested money only for show. I want Jesus to say of me "well done". The Bible says jesus became poor for us. The King of the universe! What great love he demonstrated to the poor, and so should we.

@Jo Smith that immoral behavior is actually addressed in the Bible where Jesus condemns the religious leaders of the day for giving "Corban" or gift from God tithing at the expense of not caring for aging parents (Mark 7:1-15). It's poor stewardship and a lack of love and respect for God and parent to behave as the people you speak of - super sad and unbiblical.

I was bought up to be very frugal, even though we were upper middle class. When times got hard for me later in life, I retained that way of life, and discovered some more things as I went along. I would have NEVER got where I am today if I didn't cook my own meals sew my own curtains, and a little carpentry for simple furniture. No one even knew I was poor. Top secret thing not to look poor? Be clean. Be scrupulously clean !! That nightmare of a struggle is over, but I STILL retain these things though not necessary. Making my own cement planters, cutting/styling my own hair, and never buying a brand new car. for the last 30 years....did save me 10s of thousands, I am sure, lol !!

I can completely relate to "keeping up" when eating out with others. Even when I have other long term goals I am saving towards(like being able to upgrade to business class on my next trip away), I find it hard to not buy anything when others are getting coffees or snacks while we are out, or turning down an invite to eat lunch out in a restaurant with coworkers, when I already have an inexpensive packed work lunch. I guess it is FOMO mixed with a bit of not wanting to be the only party-pooper, or have people offer to pay, which can get uncomfortable. Those unnecessary $20-$50 "treat-yourselves", add up quick in the course of a month.

This was really insightful, thank you. So much of how we spend money is about status because we are social creatures. I live in a small house and really noticed an internal quandary when I paid it off last year about whether I "should" level up to a bigger one while I still had working years ahead of me. I really had to question where that thought came from as I like my little place (cosy, less to heat, less to clean, etc). For me it was the constant immersion in bigger/newer/fancier must be better/more impressive that is so assumed and implicit it's almost impossible to spot sometimes. Love from Australia 🙂

I find a comment along the lines of..”there is nothing I like better than luxury that I didn’t have to pay luxury prices for, it’s like treasure hunting!” Keeps the cheap comments at bay. It just makes it seem like more of a joy than a sacrifice and people make those comments because they are trying to justify their own choices, they have trouble enjoying their indulgences when someone is making a “better” choice. It’s the same reason people at parties try to pressure people who are dieting to eat food they have already declined. I have also found that as long as your house doesn’t gross people out with the bathrooms visibly dirty or the kitchen with something that looks unhealthy you’re golden, people can’t be comfortable and relax in your space if they are worried about sickness. Plus, you have absolutely no idea what people will think of your space if it’s cared for, you would have to be a mind reader and psychic to know what will get noticed by them.

These sort of expectations just put unnecessary pressure on relationships and bring out greed and ugliness in people.

I don't care what anyone thinks. If I did, believe me, I wouldn't look the way I do, lol. I'm too old to care and I do what's best for me. People don't understand the reason why people are rich, is because they don't spend all the time. They're intentional. I'm intentional too. I will say this, I don't skimp when it comes to self-care (hair, makeup and all that). Here's the thing, nobody knows what brands I use. You honestly can't tell just by looking at someone. But, I know and that's all that matters. I bring lunch every day to work and breakfast I buy a couple of times a week and then I bring instant Cream of Wheat with wheat bread to make toast. I buy my lattes because I don't have a Keurig (yet). When I go shopping with friends, I'll only buy something if I was planning on buying it anyway, like replacing something that I used up. Other than that, I don't spend just to look like I'm rich. I don't want to give flight to anyone's thoughts. I'd actually rather people not knowing what I have. It's on a need to know basis and they don't need to know.

I keep up in a very basic way. Simple, classic sportswear dressed up with cool glasses, earrings, scarf, etc. I can be dressed in minutes. Have style and color choices … many compliments (which is data) and everything is second hand. Curiously I always feel up to date and it really suits me.

We do not have car leasing in the country I live in. However, some of the more expensive vehicles have better safety features and make driving more comfortable. I would definitely lease a higher end car for that reason alone, especially if you drive long distances or spend a lot of time in your car. Also, sometimes a certain "look" is needed for career success so I fully recommend leaning into the "look" but doing so in a frugal way. I heard a brilliant doctor (in private practice) say how her career improved when she finally broke down and switched her affordable Toyota to a high end vehicle. She had overheard a potential patient discussing with others if she was indeed a great doctor since she "couldn't afford a nice car". Her bookings dramatically increased when the car was bought (she could afford to buy it cash). Yes to everything else.

I'm struggling to think of any time when a lease is not "keeping up with the Joneses". If you are doing a lease because the payment is lower, you would always be better of buying a cheaper car. Wanting a new car every few years is a giant financial waste that can only be afforded by those that can outright buy a car anyways.p

We bought in a swanky neighborhood with a pile of equity when we sold our CA home. We drive around our scratch-and-dent Dodge Grand Caravan but the neighbors have Teslas and Lincoln’s. They all talk about the butcher shops they buy from and we have kitchen scrap soup. Oh well, I don’t really care.

I love your Greta Barbo look today. I admit, I feel embarrassed by my frugal by choice living. Right now, I am not ready, nor do I want the responsibility of home ownership while most of my friends have recently bought homes. I'm content in my wonderful and affordable City apartment.

Next door had 2 cars taken away by the bailiffs and a black plastic bag that must've been items from the house to use against what they owed, then 2 days later, one was replaced by the exact same one and the guy had bought a 17 year old car. They both don't work so why does the guy need his own car? How did they get their cars back so quickly?

Considering the capitalist system is based on the buying of selling and goods its no surprise people fell un-natural or un-easy participating in the game. There is absolutely nothing wrong with owning but when your things own you then life can be much more challenging. I think the best place to be is owning what you need and spending your money that will benefit you and others on a long term scale. After years of credit card debt I learned how much one can really live on and still find enjoyment in life.

Rather have piece of mind, options I don't care what others think if i don't spend such and such, if i don't look successful. Better than looking successful because of worrying about what others think but being stretched financially, in tons of debt and having no piece of mind.

I've heard of others with large payments in this range. In those cases they choose a very short terms, like 12 or 24 months to pay it off as soon as possible.

If the person giving an opinion does not help me pay any bills then I do not care about his/her opinion. I do not like to eat out at work 1st because it is a waste of money and 2nd because I find it very difficult to find healthy options at restaurants and I do not want to spend money on a meal that will not please me 100%

@thebrokenwallet

Moderation is key, and a good balance is spending no more than 5% to 10% of take-home pay on fun each month. If you have credit card debt to pay off, or if you need to build an emergency fund…stick to the lower end of this recommendation.
