On this episode of The Fab Forums I start on the front suspension of the Fox Body Mustang Hot Rod build. Motor mounts, front A arms, and rack and pinion.
Welcome to The Fab Forums. My name is Kyle Voss and I produce Custom Motorsports Fabrication content of all forms for you. Carbon Fiber, TIG Welding, Metal Shaping, Hot Rods, Muscle Cars, Custom Choppers, and everything in between. I work hard to bring you new content on a weekly basis.
Here are some of the builds you can find on this channel.
I have built several Chevy trucks on this channel. The first was my 1964 C10 named Crown Spoyal and the most recent C10 truck project was the 1969 I currently have named the Black Pearl.
I am also finishing up a custom twin turbo Ford Mustang build I call the Gray Goose. It’s a 400 cubic inch Windsor style engine with twin 70mm turbos. I am hoping to make around the 1000 horse power mark to the tires on this particular build.
Last but not least is the one off custom hot rod build called the Bibbster. This is what I call a modern day hot rod. It’s made from an old Ford Mustang foxbody, but made to look like an old school open wheeled hot rod.
I also feature other fabricators and shops like Cutworm Specialties hand formed aluminum wide body kit for a BMW e46. Jeb Greenstone has also built a twin turbo, coyote powered model A style hot rod from scratch, and is currently building a Toyota TE72 wagon drift car powered by a 1UZ Lexus v8. Jeb’s custom fabrication skills are fun to watch and always make for good videos.
Check out my playlist to see some or all of these builds.

never clicked so fast. Im so excited to see this thing coming together. Ive said this before but you're one of my biggest inspirations. Im teaching myself how to weld currently and im practicing fabricating shit so i can go and work at my friend's race shop in june. Im looking at buying a project to build on the side to use as an exhibit to showcase what ill (hopefully) be capable of in a couple of years when i can hopefully open my own shop. Keep up the amazing work. youre an inspiration to us all.

Glad to see you tackle the front suspension. For the rear hyd. ram clamps, why not make them out of the same tubing you used for the mounts. Just slit the tubing length-wise (about 1-2" long piece) and weld on some tabs to each side of the slit. Drill (and tap?) a couple holes and tighten using 1/4"-3/8" dia. capscrews. You could make the clamps and mounts all one piece, but I think you final welded the mounting tabs to the tubes already. Others have already raised my questions about the attachment points on your front cross tube/rod ends, and likely issues with bump steer. No need to repeat here. Those motor mounts should work very well. Thanks for sharing your video.

I've been watching for a few vids. Really enjoying seeing your process to build. Can tell that you have a pretty clear vision. Question: is this suspension set up function well on a road course as well as a straight line drag pull? What would be the difference if you wanted a road/auto cross suspension? Just curious because I don't know.

I cant wait to see how the body is going to tie into the rest of this project. Are you going to pinch the nose and do a modern version of an old hotrod front end where it tapers to a small sort of nose grille? You could since the radiator is in the back. just watching i can say that the skill set that you have is quite a notch or two above alot of peoples. I learn alot from watching your build process.

When I first say the engine mounts I thought something doesn't look quite right there, like they might be a bit flimsy on the vertical, but I guess once you factor in the front hoop bit that triangulates the mount. That should be plenty solid.

Kyle, great looking fab work as always but that a-arm/rack combination is going to have terrible bump steer depending on how much travel there is. For something that narrow on the lower a arm mounts you should be using a sandrail steering rack.
@metalfruttolo9855
@metalfruttolo9855 6 жыл бұрын
Same thought...ugly bump steer is one of the worst feelings when driving. Also why no "anti crush" bung through the tube where you bolt the front uniballs?
@Thefabforums
@Thefabforums 6 жыл бұрын
+Jess Neal yeah I agree...it will have very little travel though. I'll just have to get as minimal as I can.
@jesscneal
@jesscneal 6 жыл бұрын
Sounds good Kyle. Even with as little as 2" of travel that setup will have bump steer. Having your toe change even 1/4" at speed is not good. Everything else is lookin pretty neat so far :)
@Thefabforums
@Thefabforums 6 жыл бұрын
With the length of these tie rods its only gonna be a change of about 1/8 for 4 inches of travel. The lower control arms will also basically be on the inward arc the way they will be positioned. reducing that to even less than 1/8 inch. If I end up have issues once its done I will just move the heims out closer to the pivot points of the rack.
@Thefabforums

Lookin good i was hopin to see what you was doing with the front wheel spindles cause i seen in your last video that you had cut one and was wondering why you didnt just swap sides with them so that the steering hooked on the back side
@Thefabforums

swapping sides wouldn't work for several reasons. The strut alignment would be way off, the ackerman would be wrong and the brake caliper wouldn't be in the proper place

I also worry about the tube not having inside crush tubes on it where the bolts go through. The tube only has to compress a MM or so and then the bolt is no longer tight. Once that happens it wont take long for the front arms to flap around and munch up the bolts, and holes. The front arms will have a lot of force through them.

mitch denner There was no comments when I started watching the video, after the video I pulled out my vehicle design books to double check my memory before saying anything. I noticed after posting my question that there were others similar, but mine gave a bit more information in case changes did need to be made.

With those mounts being solid like that will it make the car much stiffer with a bunch of nvh? Like on normal car the oem mounts have rubber or poly to have some give...

It's a hotrod, not a cadillac... not sure if what you posted was a question or a statement, but yes solid mounting any driveline component to a chassis will cause nvh. Either way, you don't build a project like this for comfort.

Jody Barrett thanks for being a dick. It was a question. I don't know custom stuff like this. That's why the 'question' was worded horribly 🖕

The Fab Forums thanks Kyle! I just wasn't 100% sure how that would all work. Love the vids and love learning. Nvh is noise, vibration, harshness.🙏
