Slow jigging in shallow water targeting big fish is like a juggling act on a unicycle on top of a chair on top of an elephant. Slow jigging is a light line technique, yet there are instances where you need to use stronger line and all the power you can muster to pull the fish out of structure AFTER ensuring your gear is up to the task of gaining enough line to take off the slack, stretch and moving the jig to give it the right action to entice the fish to strike, then, only then you would be able to worry about pulling the fish off of the structure. With Shallower water, say in depths of 50 - 100 meters, the fish has all the advantage. Big fish in shallow water will be holding closer to structure than they would in deeper water because they don't have a lot of water to move around in and holding tight to structure offers them the security of dashing to cover when danger is sensed. Shallow water slow jigging for big fish is possible if you have the right gear and the right retrieve speeds - your reel's ability to recover line is a very big factor in slow jigging - so important that Shimano expanded their line retrieve rates to have two new speeds to fill the gap, PG reels are great for up to 50 meters but you can stretch it out to 70 meters, MG or mid gear is very effective in waters up to 120m. HG is the standard for depths up to 300, over that, the XG fills the gap. As you drop to the depth you are fishing in, your line recovery becomes less and less. The deeper you go, the less your line recovery will be - and this is crucial in taking off the stretch and slack.
This video explains how a PG reel is useful in depths of up to 50m, deeper than that, you have to reel in a bit more line to ensure your jig moves properly. MGs are useful for depths over 50m, but not over 120m.

I've tried them a lot before - the problem with offset hooks is that they snag the jig more than you want. they can work relatively ok as singles though.

Hello Kit and greetings from Greece. I am an avid follower of your informative videos. They really changed my way of fishing for the better. I especially like the way you use math to come to conclusions on fishing gear and setups. I've arrived to some of your conclusions on my own only to validate them later on your videos. Still I must point that I think that you're making an error on your assumptions on line stretch. Allow me to explain. It is true that braid line is not stretch free as advertised. I also concur that there is a 4 to 5% stretch. It is easy to observe this the hard way in shore jigging during those miserable times of a jig snug on rock or other structure, especially when the snug is at the first drop (far away from the rod). I myself have to pull the line 4 to 5 meters in order to cut the jig and I have to walk up the rocks some times in order to achive the stretch to cut. But this exact situation also demonstrates that this 4 to 7% stretch you state is achived only if the braid line is put to a tension near or at breaking point. In case of PE 3 braid for example it would require a tension force of around 20kgs or 45 lbs in order to achieve the 4-7% stretch. In no way, this kind of force is applied by, say, a 200g jig's inertia at 100m of depth or 200m or 1000m. If these 4.5m of stretch you state where to happen there would be no jigging at all since after the pull the jig would be able to come up 4.5 meters after say 4 cranks and then it would require another 4 cranks to start it again. The correct way to model the braid stretch is to think of the braid line as a very elongated and very hard spring that reaches its maximum length of just 105% at maximum tension. Still I think there is a stretch but it is only some cms. For a jig of 200g (1/100 the weight of max 20 tension for pe3) it would be at maybe 1/100th of that 4-7% (not accounting for water pressure etc). That would be 0,04% to 0,07% so 4 to 7cm which seems reasonable. This stretch may seem a loss of the retrieve but it is not actually. You gain it back after the crank since the spring/braid will shrink back during the rise of the jig after the crank only to be lost again on the next crank. So almost all of the first "empty" cranks after the initial drop of the jig are just current drag. Still the conclusion that a XG reel is needed remains valid. Hope my rationale was clear enough. Hi Dimitrios, very valid point. And this is something I thought about as well. This is why I always say stretch and slack. Not just stretch. This is what I found - the thinner the line, the more this stretch becomes apparent. at the same depth (say 150m), at the same weight jig, PE 1 and PE 3 - you feel the stretch of PE 1 more than you do with PE 3. the thicker the line you use, the less stretch becomes apparent, but the more slack it creates from drag of the line against the flow. We use jigs up to 500g or more, in deeper water with crazy currents, The deeper you go, the more the stretch becomes apparent. IF you are fishing shallow, then yes, the stretch and slack is not apparent. You feel things start to change at around 250m. on PE 2, at around 500m for PE 3.

@@TheFishingKit I say no more because experience speaks more than theory. You see I have never done any kind of vertical jigging, only shore jigging and micro shore. Still I study everything I can on slow jigging since I find that it is the epitomy of jigging whereas all the mechanics of slow can be expanded to all other forms. I try to conseptualize a unified theory of all jigging and I find that you actually do too since you always present jigging techniques as a continuum rather that seperate entities. Me and some friends decided to buy some belly boats and try fishing across the greek coasts with any kind of lure and bait fishing. My target though is to go straight to 40 to 50m depths (quite achievable with the belly boats here) and slow jig my way to oblivion. We are lucky to have quite the snappers and groupers hidden at these low depths that trolling boats can't target. I have managed to target a few with shore jigging that is also my favorite at the time. I have actually introduced a new kind of shore jigging where I swim with fins and wetsuit to rock islands near the coast with reels that I make waterproof myself with sea engine grease. It' s kind of a combination of squba and shore jigging. I can tell you more if you're into this. I also make my own jigs in order to skim on the cost of loosing metal to the reefs. I plan to buy a slow jigging set for fishing for fishing at depths from 30 to 100m. They need to be on the budget side of the market although I can't abide with an asian rod because I find the japanese style of extra parabolic rods quite ....sexy. Any suggestions are welcome of course.

@@uzalathorn That is certainly a very interesting way to fish. I have had my time with float tubes, using fly rods and ultralight light rods before, but never for jigging. before I could try, I started with Kayaks and I still have those around. you can't beat the portability of a float tube though...and there is something in it...I think what best describes it for me would be like going hand to hand combat with the fish. not like on a kayak or a boat, with a float tube, you are IN THE WATER, I'm sure you know what I mean. honestly, at this point in time, you have options from Major Craft and I guess that's about it for the lower end of the market. Ecooda is an ok brand as well, and they have a range of slow jigging rods that seem decent, although I have not used them. a 6'3-6'6 rod would be nice, but something shorter would probably be better to help control things and keep you from tipping. Don't skimp on the reel - ideally for both rod and reel, but end of the day, if you break your rod, you can still reel in the fish...if your reel breaks...then, good luck handlining braid....at least that's how I see things. So if you ask me, stay within the Shimano/Daiwa Sphere. I bought a shimano torium which I'm happy with as a beginner. Could you please advise me on a fairly light weight and good drag spinning reel for light offshore slow jigging? 5000 series Shimano or Daiwa?

There is no such thing as a spinning combo for slow jigging. Fast jigging yes, but not slow jigging.

You can use them, but...level winds are just another thing to worry about. I have used them in the past and broke a few reels, so I would rather use a reel without a levelwind for this type of fishing, lighter lines though...different story.

Hello from Australia, do catch mulloway(yewfish) I know Africa has them, threadfin salmon? And maybe not barramundi, would be great to film some episodes if you could come down-under targeting them and the king george whiting that grows 130cm, it was $100aud a kilo last year. I subscribed about almost a year ago from the first episode I seen and have helped me to make my own assist hooks I didn't know anything about and have the right mindset to be successful, Thank You Very Much for opening my mind to be like a sponge absorbing many possibilities to enjoy and to look forward too.

Thanks for the very educational video I just started fishing off sure. Here in east Texas we fish around 70-100ft max which is not a lot by any means. I’m trying to find the best bang for my buck. Most of the time we have 8-10k snappers or 10-12 amber jack. Never jigged for king but those come around too. I can see some good deals on 1500HG but based on your video I should get 1500-2000PG. What you think?

sounds pretty standard. If you get a PG, and at that depth, you can do two types of jigging as well - you can get a slow jigging rod and a fast jigging rod and the reel will work for both techniques. BUT...get PROPER RODS AND REELS. that way, you dont spend double.

@@aldfishing That depends on where you fish, but to match the reels and lines used as discussed on the video, then follow the 1g/m rule...so it would be rods that can do 50-100g jigs. the reels are discussed in the video and examples given.

Yes of course, before MG and XG were introduced, we used HG. I would pick HG for that depth range too, I haven't bought an MG or an XG to be honest, coz the depths I fish in are mostly right for HG.

@@TheFishingKit to be honest it's my first time this coming sunday for offshore jigging. I will be using a PE 2.5 mainline but i'm not sure if 70 LB of leaderline will do? And i will be using an "Ecooda Online E" slow jigging baitcast rod with a max of 15kg drag and a jig of 200g and one 250g jig. What do you think Sir?

70 is too much. I mostly use 40. PE 2.5 is a bit thick as well, as I mostly use PE2. 200-250g jigs are ok on PE 2 even when there is a bit of current, but you will have problems with PE 2.5 if the currents are stronger. You need more jigs, you can't just go out with two. Snags, fish taking the jig....etc. nothing wrong with your combo, but your line is a bit worrying. If the flow of the current isn't too strong you would be ok.

@@TheFishingKit other brands have difference in PE sizes/diameter. What should be the right LB for my Mainline Sir? Looking at my setup for slow jigging of torium 16HGLH, Ecooda Online E slowjigging rod jig capacity of 200g - 400g, 15kg max drag but i will be using 200g - 300g of jigs.

@@dharylallorde2528 PE is a measure of diameter, so PE 2, is PE 2. It's not like the american standard that says 30lb in one company then its not as thin as another brand then one breaks at 50lb and the other 70lb. Standard for slow jigging is PE 2. the thinner your line the better and more sensitive your overall system will be.
