This is so helpful. Just started working at a design studio and realized how school is so different compared to actually working in a studio. Design thinking is waaaayyy faster and you tend to forget about all these important principles/ elements!

Great way of looking at the composition in a detached sort of way with the blocks. Thanks for the tips, Chris!

Design and music production are similar. If your mix sounds muddy or cluttered, you've got to "mute" individual instruments and voices to find out which single element or combination of elements are clashing. Sometimes a minor EQ tweak and level adjustment will fix the balance. But oftentimes, the clash happens because an instrument/voice is not a good fit with the whole, no matter how much you tweak. Then, you either need to rerecord the voice/instrument, or replace it with something completely different. The same can be said of type, colour, texture, negative space... One or a combination of elements can either elevate or spoil the whole.

This tutorial series is amazing. The instructor has obviously mastered his craft, and he's a gifted teacher. Usually a person is a great craftsman or a great teacher. It's rare for one person to have both skills. I've tried teaching myself design by reading books, but I never could implement the concepts. Learning design has been very frustraiting for me. I think these videos may be the key that I've been looking for.

I watched the whole stream the other day. But these bits and pieces still manage to sound very new and informative. You guys are just Type gods. (I'm an architect, this knowledge of Type on these sessions is being extremely useful to summarize my experience in designing buildings. Its like reducing complex universal visual concepts into its basic forms. And you make it available for free, cannot thank and admire you enough).

I love these videos that bring things back to basics and simplifying where possible. I'm curious if you could approach a page with extremely dense text/information on it in the same way? I recently worked with a client who only wanted to pack as much content onto one page as possible, and it would often compromise a lot of potential design elements (or at least completely change the design that was in place). Keep it up and thank you for these vids!
