Brind'Amour is a perfect example of how stats are an incomplete measure of a player's influence on the performance of a team. He was captain of the Hurricanes the year they won the Stanley Cup for a reason- as a veteran player with an insane work ethic, he inspired better training and play from the team around him. Ask anyone who has played for him as a coach now, and they'll tell you the same thing. That's why the HOF is a nomination and vote process and not a computer pick, thankfully. The unquantifiable element of Rod's career will eventually get him inducted, for sure.

An important point that Shannon didn't mention: Brind'Amour is one of the all-time elite face off men. He is 4th all-time in both Face Offs Won and Face Off Percentage. No one else is that high in both categories. You could argue that he's actually the best in the modern era.

I think what hurts a lot of "fringe" HOF players is that they only put, I think, 6 at most in, in a year. And I put fringe in quotes becuse I don't want to sound like I'm attacking him, he was one of my favorite players growing up, but if he got into the Hall I think itbwould be great, but I wouldn't feel cheated if he did not.
@preppen78
@preppen78 2 жыл бұрын
Yea, it's easy to think that 'this player absolutely belongs in the HOF', until you start looking at some other players who also might have an equally good case. Only 6 per year and new obvious ones always take a few spots. I'd like to see an updated list of the snubs to see who else is out there competing for a spot. That said, I agree, I think he'll get in as a player. Another thought - the case of Rod Brind'amour vs Henrik Zetterberg (when he retires). How about a Hockey Guy series where he compares two players careers and weighs in on their chances for a HOF spot?
@bikingD
@bikingD 2 жыл бұрын
@@preppen78 I don't know. Rod has the fact how long his career lasted. He does have 2 selke awards. A Stanley cup final and a Stanley Cup win. @preppen78
@preppen78 2 жыл бұрын
@@bikingD I think the combination of a long career, 2 selkes, one SC as captain and good overall stats (not amazing) is why he's considered for HOF. Not a sure shot because I doubt he ever was considered a top 10 player at any point in his career, but I also believe he will make it in as a player.

Speaking of Brind'Amour, I noticed that every Selke winner from 1990-2019 either won a Cup or made it to the SC Finals. It turns out having a player who can play the defensive role against teams' top lines will help a team do well in the playoffs (Danault isn't a Selke winner but he was incredibly in that role in these past playoffs)

Rod was the model of an elite 2 way player, one of the vanguards of forming the model of that every coach and every fan now expects of every forward, not just centers. He also was at the forefront of modernizing fitness standards for players to what we have today. Add that to the numbers, which are there, and the elite leadership now on display in his coaching, and c'mon, how do you not put him in the hall of fame? Especially when guys like Kevin Lowe are admitted.

Rod da Bod as the Caniac nation calls him will be in NHL HOF soon. One of the hardest working players/coaches in the game. On pure talent alone I agree there are better, but as far as work erhic you won't find any better. Even today you hear how his players don't want to be out worked by their coach in the gym. He was absolutely an elite defensive forward with two Selkes, and that didn't stop him from scoring almost 1200 career points. Guy Carbonneau is in the Hall of Fame with three Selkes and roughly half that amount of points. Brind'Amour also has a Jack Adams and is pretty well regarded as one of the best head coaches in hockey. I don't see how there's any reasonable argument for leaving him out at this point. Also, with the Selke being what it is, you can probably assume a guy who wins two Selkes late in his career probably should've won them previously but got overlooked because it's an award based on name recognition. Honestly he was probably deserving of at least 5 or 6 Selkes and I'm guessing any Flyers fan will vouch for that.

One of the best defensive forwards ever, should get in just based on that. Don't know how frank selke played but Rod is a definition of a selke winner. He consistently outscored the top lines he was supposed to check. When it mattered too-in the playoffs. While nobody thinks danault is a HOF, well, Rod s closer to Bergeron offensively than danault will ever be and Bergeron is a HOF

I've viewed Brind'amour as an HOFER for a long time, sure he lacks the dominant points totals and the hardware alot of other HOFERS have, However his durability, Longevity combined with his all around 200 foot game and fact he won a Stanley Cup as a captain late in his career to go along with the two selkes is enough for me, a great leader, great effort/all around player who plays like an ironman type guy so to speak for as long as Rod and to me that Cup win as Captain in 06 with Canes should of been enough.. I hope he gets in someday and yes his coaching success will help.

The numbers are borderline but the intangibles make him a first ballot HOF guy. One could make the argument that he has meant more to the Hurricanes than any single person has meant to any other franchise. In Rod We Trust.

The year the Canes won the cup, Brind'Amour was a very important part of hte team. I remember his on-ice impact, although the numbers aren't close to PPG. In fact, looking at him play, I was sure he had a PPG run back then.

That was his own fault, he missed a trip to the Final because of a contract dispute, the Blues had a history of idiotic free agent decisions, they were notorious.

@@SverigeiSverige Long story, but, the Blues, (as only the Blues can), bungled a decision involving free agents, and, the arbitrator ruled against them.

To me he should be in the Hall. The defence was great and had great season in the dead pick era. Plus the playoff numbers help

Have to say eventually he'll get in known as one of the best two way forwards at the time. Winning two Selke Awards later in his career and stepping up in the playoffs. However Theoren Fleury needs to be in if Rod Brind'Amour gets in.

Stats on years played, games played, total goals, total assists, total points, playoff stats, face off percentage, and on, and on, and on, make it ridiculous that this is even a conversation. Probably the best player who has been overlooked by HOF process. HOF doesn't mean shit if Rod isn't in it.
