Troy puts himself out there to assist any hunter that is trying to get a higher foc with an adult arrow. I started an email conversation with him as I began my journey into tuning my first compound bow and he was very helpful. When we ran into an issue that he was unsure of, he got the wizard involved. Troy is the reason why I changed my setup and the reason for my success this year!! I live in Southeast Missouri and the last couple of years have wanted to take a wild hog... I shot 7 in the last few seasons without a recovery and found myself looking into why my arrows were not doin the job. Found the Fairy and BAM!!! 💥💥💥 Took my first big sow this year!!! I had graduated to an adult bowhunter 🤟 He actually took the time to talk to me, give me his advice, and guide me to my goal! Troy is an AWESOME down to earth guy!

I started bow hunting in 1970. In those days we used "black diamonds" and Bear Razor heads. Then I went to a 3 blade fixed broad head in the late 70's. I used Thunderhead 125's for well over 20 years and just about 5 years ago I begrudgingly tried expanding mechanical heads. I have taken several deer with them and they do work. But this video hit me between the eyes. The physics and the logic is inescapable. Time for me to "re-rig". I am switching to cut on contact fixed blades. Thanks!

Guys, I have to thank you for starting me on the path of changing my entire arrow setup. I haven't taken a deer with them yet, but just target shooting and tuning was an amazing difference. The bow is quieter, the penetration is unreal, I'm more confident in my shots and my groups are tighter. Thank you guys for everything, it's so much fun to shoot!

The first ever THP guest I’ve had to cut the video short. I’ve shot under 450gr at 65# for the last 10 years and have yet to have any issue recovering a deer and say 95% are pass throughs. He’s definitely a promoter

He does have an interesting personality but he’s not promoting any products. In fact he’s made it a point not to in his pursuit of objective testing. He used to shoot light setups and killed plenty of stuff with them. So did we. However we ran into a few issues with deflections so decided to make the switch. In our situation it made sense.

Went adult arrows last year. Blood trails are a lot less important when they stagger only a few feet.

This is awesome. As a traditional archer, I have been very focused on big heavy arrows, hefty heads, and prefer single bevel heads. I am happy to see modern archers understanding the Ashby studies, and moving in that direction...making arrows as sharp as a samuri sword, with power of a freight train, and no moving parts. Keep in mind bevel must match the feather spin. Current setup: 65# longbow, 750g total weight wood arrows with 200g Grizzly single bevel heads.

Great video!!! Switched my setup 2 years ago after shooting "flappers" and hit my target buck in the shoulder. Since then, I'm shooting 550 grains with Magnus black hornets and the results have been amazing. Cuts through them like butter and the deer act like nothing hit them till they fall over a few seconds later. Don't think I've had an animal go more than 50 yards.

I am mot usually literal , but I am compelled to write this to you all . I want to say that I anticipate your U Tube channel every day You are my go to channel. Like I did as a youngster every Sunday ( no cable ,rabbit ears) Disney and Mutual of Omaha wild kingdom,these are a few of the shows I really looked forward to and got excited and now I get this excitement from the anticipation of a new episode . You all seem to be average guys that a compassion and respect for animals and hunting . So I’ll have to wait for , with anticipation, for your next episode. Just ran across this. I hunt with gun and bow. I’m an old man. I read ELMER KEITH years ago. His mantra was BIGGER IS BETTER. Made sense to me. I hunted everything with a 338, sometimes 375. NO PROBLEM with anything. With a bow, I would certainly agree, heavier, or, bigger IS better. Just saying, it WORKS FOR ME. Thanks guys. 👍👍😃 P S, I’m using Iron Will single bevel. 👍👍

Great and informative video. I’ve been at it long enough to be able to say, I’ve tried and used everything from Fred Bear 2 blades right thru to 3 blade mechanicals. Anything with a chisel point requires 30 pounds + pressure to perforate one layer of hide whereas the cut on impact variety is closer to 3-5 pounds pressure allowing the arrow to conserve enough energy to push the arrow thru the cavity and then another layer of hide. At the end of the day shot placement and distance of shot reign supreme. The fact that you’re educating the viewer with these videos is super helpful but don’t stop preaching about making the decision to ONLY take ethical shots at ethical distances.

I've been bow hunting since 1972 (yes I'm old) and I haven't experienced the penetration issues these guys have with my setup. I shoot a 70lb PSE Evo with a 378 grain arrow at 315 fps shooting swacker broadheads. I'm fortunate and get to shoot a lot of whitetails and I've shot through all of them but one. I shot a 13 point in the shoulder and broke both front shoulders. I had to break the arrow to remove the heart when field dressing. I haven't shot hogs though so can't comment on bow hunting those. You have to find a balance with the size of broadhead you shoot with the KE you are getting with your setup. I use what works for me but If you need more penetration I would follow these guys recommendations and shoot a heavier arrow and a fixed head like they suggest. It would definitely help.

i'm older...been hunting since 65...the wooden Ben Person arrows i still have weigh 505 grains...if you're that old the aluminum arrows you were shooting were around 550/575 with fixed....heavy forever.

Good discussion guys. I went back to my old 2219 telephone poles. My bow shoots a lot quieter. The arrow uses more of the bow’s energy with heavy arrows. The discussion on weight forward of center was spot on but a big point you missed was getting the broadhead lined up with the shaft. And how important it is to use field points the same weight as your broadheads. Broadheads normally don’t fly exactly like field points but well tuned heads are close. And the difference should not be the enough to cause a miss or poor hit on a deer. A squirrel’s head is another story but that is what the judo point is for in my quiver.

I've been watching THP since last spring's turkey season. This past fall was my first year to bow hunt whitetail with the encouragement (unbeknownst to you all) of Aaron and all you guys. Uh, yeah… 😐 it's funny, coming from shooting bows that need arrows >8gpp and typically perform best when using 10gpp, 32inch barreled or tapered arrows with traditional broadheads, because everything he's saying and you guys are discovering are simply old news to us. Not to say I don't appreciate the hard work, glad to have you guys back into the archery brotherhood. Next they'll "discover" that shooting off the left-hand side of the bow and using an olympic draw are biomechanically inefficient 😅

I prefer heavy arrow, expandable head set up myself, more forgiveness as far as hit location, turning what would be a liver hit to liver and a clipped lung makes ALL the difference to me. You do give up the quartering too shot, but I’m not sure I’d take that anyway. Never sacrificed on penetration either

Keywords to search: Ethics archery, FOC, Dynamic spine, Dr. Ed Ashby, Sirius Archery, single bevel broadheads, scapula, low profile vanes, and quit fearing bone. @ranchfairy if everyone got to 550 for whitetail they'd almost always make 2 holes instead of 1.

So if I’m shoot a 55 pound bow what grain arrow and broadhead should I use? Would a 350 grain arrow with a 150 grain broadhead work?

@@wyatth9555 don't think about shaft weight. Think about 1) what broadhead do I want to shoot. 2) do I want more FOC added with help of a weighted insert. 3) now that I know how much insert & BH weigh what spine shaft do I need for the proper dynamic spine. ..... answer yourself those 3 questions in that order and you will be well within the rabbit hole. Any attempt to go out of order will be counter productive.

Shot easten FMJ 340 with 100 grain G5 deadmeat for the past 2 seasons overall arrow weight is 450 grains. Shooting them with a 70 lb 28 in draw Mathews Chill. Have shot 4 deer with this set up, all of them square in the shoulder (2 where mature bucks btw) all passed completely through and all the deer ran around 30 yds give or take. All that said mechanical broadheads are not all created equal there are good ones and terrible ones, but if you get good ones they can be as deadly or deadlier than fixed blade broadheads, and they fly like field points. Also you can shoot a medium weight arrow flatten your trajectory and still have penetration and punch to spare.

It does blow my mind when you see these hunting shows on TV and some guy gets a shot a bruiser at 20 yards and the fletching doesn't even enter the body cavity let alone get a complete pass through. I made the switch 4 years ago. Went from shooting a 420 grain arrow with a mechanical to a 525 with a single bevel fixed and the results are outstanding. Great info in this video! Wish the KZfaq algorithm would have got this to me sooner.

We've only been using single bevel arrow/broadheads for thousands of years that were probably alot heavier and way slower and the evolution got us here.

I've shot a buck 2 years ago with a 450 grains arrow set up, hit im a little bit high with a 2inches rage chizzel point and didint have blood trail!!! I found him by luck with 5 inches of broken arrow penetration and it barely touch 1 lung!!!! I said to my self , nerver again!!! My set up is now 250 grains Abowyer brown bear tanto tip single bevel, 50 grains outserts and 340 grains arrow!!! I've sacrifice speed for quiteness and penetration. Thank you THP and Ranch Fairy for all this knowledge shared to us!!!!

Lol, should hear story after story of those hunter's that my dog and I tracked their wounded deer. I can't even remember how many this past season alone were using mechanical blade's, yet somehow they make you feel like your tracking dog is the answer to finding their wounded deer and that deer has to be laying dead somewhere based on where they hit the deer. Most of the Ranch Fairy's information is old new's to some of my generation of hunter's in the know and myself, but needs to learned and understood by the next generation's of hunter's. It's refreshing to see such hunters as the Ranch Fairy, a dedicated organization and his mentor that continue to educate hunters who struggle with their decisions on what size and weight arrows and type blades one needs to be more successful, not to mention as ethical of a killing machine we all can be out hunting our quarry. I would like to see more information being taught on crossbow bolt's in regards since so many hunters are using them.

Depends what you're hunting. I hunt whitetail and don't experience those issues with roughly 500 grains. I've always went one size heavier than charts show and shoot 100 grain head. Most underspine with mechanicals and that is the issue in itself. For whitetail you don't need 650 grains.

i can see a case for both single bevel and expandable. No doubt you will get more penetration with the single bevel/heavy arrow but if Zach shot that big buck along the river with a mechanical, it would have been dead in seconds due to the large cutting diameter, he would have got either the spine or top of lungs. I personally shoot both. Expandables for deer, and fixed for elk. Have killed plenty with both. Its all about shot placement.

Oakave84 very true. Our mind changed when we got the data from the dog trackers. Most of them concur that pass through hits yielded more recoveries than hits where the arrow stayed in the deer. Regardless of broadhead you choose, a pass through should be the goal after discussing this with them.

Impressive stuff. Been bow hunting whitetails since the 60's as a teenager . Back then we used the Fred Bear heads and wood then aluminum shafts. Always wondered about the lite, carbon, but was chasing speed with compounds. Have used mechanical a few times but always came back to fixed. Thanks for bringing this back into focus. Really resonated with me. Going to change my setup.

Wild Boar Adventures my brother has been telling celebs and famous archers to throw out the mechanicals and put on fixed blades that can penetrate the over one inch thick cartilage plate on the trophy boars. Thank you for sharing this important info.

I understand the the logic but I can’t switch my setup for whitetails. 100 grain NAP spitfires. 70 lb. Matthews Z7. I have so much confidence in my setup and have never broken a blade even when sneaking the shot in front of the shoulder blade on a quartering shot. Broadside I always get a pass through with the deer tearing out of there fast but crashing in sight or in earshot. Great blood trails. I believe there are pros and cons to the single bevel craze. I think Jakes buck would be down in 200 yards with my setup with the same shot placement. Your guys even admitted you could not believe that deer was still alive with the shot placement. I can’t attest to any other broadhead besides spitfires. I have watched others like Shane Simpson shooting the single bevel and I just don’t think the terminal damage in comparable to spitfires.

One of your best informational videos yet, I shot a mature buck here in Michigan last year with a "rage" and it did exactly what you were talking about perfect in the pocket placement and it turned back and came out at the opposite side rear hip. was lucky enough to sneak up on it and put another arrow in it, but since then have had two separate instances with mechanicals not killing the game in a efficient manor. I am defiantly switching to heavier arrows and single bevel broadhead's for next season!! Thanks for the information and for turning me onto the ranch fairy....

Incredibly interesting discussion!! Last year my daughter shot a nice 8-point buck with her .243. When field dressing it and splitting the pelvis, I grabbed what I thought was a very smooth bone or a stick (couldn't figure out why a bone or stick would be right there) only to quickly realize it was the broadhead end (about 11") of an arrow. So, shot selection/placement IS quite critical and obviously was not a consideration when this buck was previously shot.

Switched to a longbow from a compound a year ago. Used to shoot a twizzlers with a flapper. I wanted something bullet proof for the 56#im drawing now. Stumbled upon the Ashbey reports and then found grizzlystiks. Ran a 650gr arrow with 200gr SB up at around 27% FOC. They fly like darts and the most important thing in my opinion, is that the bow is whisper quiet. The heavy the arrow the more the quieter the release.

I’m switching to at least 500 grain. I’ve been shooting the typical 400gr shaft 100gr mechanical and I’ve been hero or zero like y’all say over many years. I’ve had rib deflection, no shoulder pass through at 20 yards and on hogs forget it. They run of with my shaft and broadhead. Great video!!

What a very truthful and perfectly timed video. I have been wanting to do this for years but have stuck with a “lighter set up” for western game. With a 31” draw I was hunting western game with a 465 grain set up cruising at 310-315 FPS making massive holes until I hit the scapula and only had 4 inches of penetration. This year I am building a 600+ set up or heavier. Thank you for the informative video.

I started looking for information on generally heavier arrow setups with higher FOC following the close of deer season. I think I heard about Ranch Fairy on a THP podcast. I watched a number of Troy's videos and corresponded with him by email. He is enthusiastic, accessible, responsive and helpful. I purchased a test kit of heavy field points and I picked up a couple of stiffer spined arrows. I will be doing some testing/tuning soon, and selecting the arrow & head weight combinations that I like. I am looking forward to using a heavier setup next season. Thanks for doing the video.

Same! I'm a proud shooter of a skeet load twizzler tipped with a flapper! Call it what you want but it consistently kills deer as quickly as anything shown or discussed in that video. The difference is, I don't feel the need to make jokes about why I think their style is overkill. It doesn't matter to me if I'm the only person on the planet shooting a setup comparable to mine because the eye test has proven it to be highly effective for years now.

I hunted in my teens and got away from it and really decided to get back into it this year. Bought a bow and took it to a shop to get built and tuned. Of course they hooked me up with a 410 grain total weight arrow. Been watching a lot of videos on KZfaq and realize I should be shooting a much heavier arrow and at least a fixed blade head. Its to late this year to make the switch but I am for sure going to next year I just hope I don't regret not just jumping in and doing it this year. Season starts here in A few weeks. Using rocket steelhead 100 grain. Hope I dont have any more issues. Already had my blades coming open in Flight when Practicing and sent my arrows 6-8 inches left just before impact. They don't make the steelheads any more so the unopened pack I bought off eBay was new old stock from A shop. Probably 3 or 4 years old so my guess is the rubber bands must have eroded in that time and I could feel and feel that they didn't keep the blades super tight but just assumed it would be fine and that that's how they where desighned to be. I guess not. Tried some different rubber bands and no problems. I love hunting but hate to see or think that something is suffering. With these heavy arrows and coc heads it seems and looks like it zips right threw them and that they don't even feel a thing so it seems like Its the way to go

Thanks for a great video. Agreed with 99% of what's being said. I've had horror stories with almost every setup I've tried in the last 20+ yrs bow hunting. I've lost deer with light arrows and mechanicals from no penetration and I've lost deer with 550 grain arrows and fixed heads from not making a perfect shot and not having blood even when waiting as much as 12 hrs to start tracking. Some deer don't know what hit them, but others run to the next county when they're hit marginally in high pressure areas. To each their own, but I've had my highest recovery rate with a 500+ grain arrow and a rage trypan or hypodermic. With the heavy arrows, high foc, I dont get the deflection or wobble and the penetration is shocking, even through shoulder. These heads aren't perfect but none are. In my humble opinion, the key is heavy arrows, with high foc. I use the mechanical because they grant some forgiveness on marginal shots and we all know things happen in the woods that are unintended regardless of distance or angle. There's no doubt that a single bevel is gonna penetrate more, but in some situations I require more than a pencil hole and specs of blood for tracking, especially in thick, high stem count areas or fields. . To each their own. This has just been my experience through a long learning curve. Thanks again for another great video. So much respect for the guys at THP. Keep doing what you're doing

Mechanicals 100% have major deflection problems. I’ve had great success with the spitfire 3 blade mechanicals, but I’ve been incredibly lucky with good deflections. I keep telling myself I need to switch to fixed blades before it costs me a deer. It’s hard to switch from a broadhead that has worked for me & always has field point accuracy. Not to mention broadheads are too expensive to just start testing multiple brands. I’ve also had a lot of complete pass throughs. The majority of deer I’ve shot have had no idea what hit them, but I credit most of that on having a very quiet bow, not my arrow setup. I shoot a 475g arrow. I’d love to shoot a heavier arrow, but I’m not sacrificing the ability to shoot long range (50+)

Hey, guys. I shoot a crossbow due to a shoulder injury. My current bolt setup (with Rage 125's) is just over 400 grains on a 20 inch bolt. This past year, I lost a buck because my broadhead deflected off the shoulder. I would like to switch to fixed broadheads and increase my total grains, but don't have much money to experiment with different setups. Do you guys have any recommendations, or would you consider making a video (or series of videos) on crossbow and bolt setups? Thanks!

I shoot a 28-inch carbon arrow with a 7-inch piece of a 2216 epoxied to the front of the arrow and have great success. I am 75 and have to shoot 55# with my Bear Empire bow.

I shoot a 80 pound Hoyt Helix ultra with 450 grain arrows with grim reaper whitetail specials shooting 310 fps absolutely smack shoulders and almost always a nice shirt track job

I went back to heavy this past season just over 600gr about 20% foc this year goal is to be Ashby legal at least and over 20% (30 ish % would be amazing). Great video guys.

He said he hunts 200 pound hogs. One needs a very heavy arrow for that. Whitetail are thin skinned. You don't need such a heavy arrow. It's better to have a little more forgiveness in range estimation by having a little more speed! I TOTALLY agree with the comments about mechs. vs COC. I've been a Magnus fan for years! Guys, figure your Kinetic energy by using a search for KE calculator and plus in the two variables weight X Speed. You'll need to weigh your finished arrow and chrono your speed. One only needs about 40 lbs KE to pass through deer. At 270 fps and 424 grains I've got 68 lbs KE. AND NOBODY SHOULD BE SHOOTING WHITETAILS IN THE BONES (especially the shoulder) on purpose!

Just assembled an arrow to 448 grains, 16 foc. No heavier for me because I use single pin and there's about a 7 inch drop between 20 and 30 yards

I have been bow hunting for 4 yrs now first 3 yrs shot rage hypodermic mechanicals, never had a pass through, bought a new bow this past year Bear divergent 70lb draw shot a 400 grain arrow with a 100 grain QAD exodus fixed, complete pass through this year. I think I would like to get my setup up to 600 grains next year, really want to try the magnus black hornet. I’ll never go back to a mechanical!

I was already planning on making the switch this year! Just trying to decide on weight and point. Cutthroat or Bone Broadheads. Bone does have limited weight options though.

Awesome video. My 84 year old mom shoots Magnus broadheads out of a 40 pound Bear compound. She has shot 2 bucks since turning 75 and both were quick kills. Heavier arrows seem to fly better for me and deaden the sound of the shot, in my experience, as well. Thanks for the great discussion.

I've shot 2 does, in the shoulder, in the previous years with the Rage only to see my arrow get minimum penetration and the deer run off with no blood trail. Thanks for the info!
