In this video we go over the correct method to learn calisthenics static skills, like the planche, front lever and backlever. Many people give bad advice on how to learn these static skills, without being able to perform them or without the knowledge. Be careful who you get your information from!
Zdenek Latal, from what I've seen is one of those people. In this video I explain why, and what you SHOULD be doing to learn these skills effectively and not become perpetually stuck & lost with your training.

To all those that may be disappointed, that this video is focused on what not to do, the next video will be on what TO DO to achieve static skills in clear steps! Remember: specific training and more muscles are BOTH important for strength. And static skills require a lot of strength. So don’t ignore either.

So I’m still really new to calisthenics, and I’m in a little pickle. So I’m confused about whether I should do hypertrophy or strength calisthenics training. I want to have that fit body look as well as the strength to do cool stuff like the plenche hold or the front lever, and I know that I have to eat fewer calories and do around 8 to 15 reps for hypertrophy, and if I want to gain strength for calisthenics, I should do weighted pull-ups or push-ups with a 4 to 6 rep range. The answer is probably simple, but I'm just making it harder on myself by thinking too much, but idk.

@@gengar180-nh4zs if you’re looking for the aesthetics and strength skills start with the basics and then progress to weighted basics, strength and hypertrophy have a great overlap so you should see gains in both aspects. Also you don’t want to be in a big deficit especially if you’re trying to build muscle, a slight surplus is most likely going to be optimal. Next video will dive deeper into this

Finally the video that speak up this fact. I myself am a calithenics athlete with over 7 years experience, then I must say that the specificity rule is important. I could do one arm handstand (over 1 min), full planche and other advanced skills thanks to progressive overload and keep the exercise specificity. That is the point Znedek didn't talk about (or really don't want to talk about, maybe he is not speding time to research things), and at that point I really thought he's just gaslighting the audience.

I went through most of his content and yeah Znedek doesn't talk about the specificity rule at all, i even saw him do a one arm handstand in his older videos( this does not happen unless you use the law of specificity). He himself also stated he had 7 free handstand pushups so he ofcs knows about this but never talks about specifity anymore.

Yes, levers such as planche, front or back levers, various cross positions, require very specific combinations of muscle contractions. Gymnastics training by ring specialists go back 70 years plus in the U.S. NCAAs. These are upper body and mid-section tasks. Don't forget the lower body (of which, again, gymnasts have quite a bit of insight into training, but also martial artists, track and field athletes, and others).

Started to become a big Zdenek fan a few months ago when he first started to share his ideas about the importance of basics. Plus his editing was hilarious with all the memes. At the beginning I agreed a lot since I feel many people are rushing for skills with negligible experience with basics. With time though I noticed issues with his line of thinking and also saw other viewers comment their disagreements. For example I tried to make him aware that learning skills also requires smart programming and not just huge muscles + spamming attempts. Also called him out on saying a straddle planche is nothing. He replied a few times by brushing it off and never took criticism like that seriously. Then the videos got darker and more negative like you pointed out which was a huge turn off but sadly affected my outlook on the sport as well for some time. My conclusion is similar to yours. If he would've spent at least half the time he puts into these videos with researching exercise science he would've achieved that front lever already. You clearly notice his complete lack of knowledge whenever he talks about nutrition for example. Instead of researching what a good diet for strength sports is and how to recover effectively from training he just bought weight gainer and some booster pills. It's unbelievable.

Been training for about 6-7 months just the basics, only static I can do is L-sit for about 25 seconds currently at 183 cm 78kg. I've been watching quite a bit of workout content lately , fitnessfaq ,Daniel laizans , reinnaisaince periodization , Jeremy Ethier, so not really just Calisthenics videos just so I can gain more knowledge and build the Physique I've always dreamed of. But learning static skills while having that body is the end goal for me. I happened to randomly get recommended a couple of zdeneks videos and watched a few for fun, seeing him say he couldn't front lever after 6 years of training did make me feel bad for him but also question the commitment and the ways he train, also him saying that some people will never achieve or rather are incapable of ever achieving the high end calisthenics skills really made it sound like an excuse for his lack of progress in 6 years. I'm glad I got recommended this video as your content seems to be inspiring, high quality and most importantly you've based it on research you've done. Subbed 🔥

Yeah 100%, however Zdenek is correct about the likelyhood of getting for instance a maltese press, zanetti, victorian on cross and so on. Like the elite moves are not accessible for almost everyone. MInd you these moves are already hard for people who are in the top of the statics game, with vic cross still only accessible to like a very few, and even van gelder. So from a realistic standpoint he is right, ( planche and front lever hold i think is accesbile for alot of people with hard work and dedication.)

The height thing is comepletely reversed btw, as a 5.6 guy, its way easier for me to gain muscle and build hypertrophy then it is for a tall guy, coz there's just less frame to fill, lets say i gain 5kg worth of muscle, and tall guy gets the same, due to him having longer bones, those 5 kg are stretched thinner throughout the body, so he looks leaner, i only worked out of about a year and i have my dream physyque, sadly i was focusing exclusivly on hypertrophy so im very weak, even tho i look like a greek god, so now i go full strengh coz i want to be strong

It's a little misleading. Znedek's goals were ultimately to get aesthetics. He got exactly that. This means, to whoever is trying to go for aesthetics, his method does work. What the video and Znedek's perception of things as to why he's failed is because of performance. He didn't include performance into this training method. Only to put volume, not strength. If you're someone looking to be an actual calisthenics athlete, Znedek's method won't work as his approach is body building only. Not weight lifting. As someone in training, one thing I ask people that I also train is their goals. Strength doesn't make you big, big doesn't make you strong. Endurance doesn't make you small. Cardio doesn't necessarily mean running. Exhaustion doesn't necessarily mean tired. You CAN do cardio without needing to run. Endurance is all about low impact, high intensity. Strength isn't the amount of weight you move but how you move that amount of weight. Volume is how much blood can you pump into that muscle and hold without damaging. (meaning, you can literally do something weightless and just flex it). Majority of body builders put themselves in the most harm on stage because of this as being on stage require them to pose (which means flexing while under THE WORST conditions they can be in)

I think he is maybe trying to make Zdenek look bad on purpose. He said in one of the replies that Zdenek made a video where he mischaracterised what he said. Now he is doing the same thing to Zdenek. All you have to do is watch a couple of Zdenek's videos to know this guy is reaching and ignoring whole parts of Zdenek's video to make him sound stupid. A lot of people who watch this video will just assume this is what Zdenek actually thinks and they'll think he's stupid. I already saw a comment like "No hate but this guy seems like a complete idiot". Even if Zdenek did it to him first, all I know is 2 wrongs dont make a right. He couldve made a video about how Zdenek improperly portrayed his thoughts and ideas but no, he did the same thing Zdenek did to him. This is a sad day for the calisthenics community. Side note: I just started my handstand journey. Pray for me please

Great video. I’m glad I wasn’t the only one with this view point. His content in regard to different athletes is quite entertaining and he does a great job with editing and research. However when it comes to training tips it’s as if I’m being told how to get to level 7 from someone who is only a level 2. It isn’t mean. It’s just real. You can’t become a master if you’re “learning” from a student.

Most of the video i agree with you but. Wong isnt skinny his upper body is veryyy well developed, and usually athletes skinnier than wong with same level of strength are really short. And muscle mass is super important. the only reasons big people bad at cali are: never trained cali or only started, more than 20% body fat which means they have less muscle than it looks, big legs. But other than that u made good points bro nice vid!

Thanks for the comment! But if you listen through the videoI don’t say Wong is skinny and don’t say muscle isn’t important. I say wong isn’t a “hobbit” he’s on the taller side, and I say muscle and strength are both important 👍🏾

Okay, but where is he wrong? He does not reject elemental training. He says that you first need really base. The taller/heavier you are, the more muscles you need. After reading a lot of information and base on my own experience, I can say that in order to perform a front lever you need a pull-up base with extra weight 50% of your bodyweight 5-10 reps. And you need to eat 3000+ calories to progress (we're talking about Zdenek's physique 190 cm height). Not every stomach and body can deal with this. It's not surprising that he talks about short athletes like that because they have a much easier in all aspects of the sport.
@TheJackedVegan
@TheJackedVegan 7 ай бұрын
He’s not entirely wrong but rather he gives half of the story which leads to bad advice. He seems believe strength is only a result of muscle and building muscle will give you skills. Obviously this is partially true but he doesn’t mention specific training, relative strength, how to properly train for these skills etc of course a base is required (we all know this) but it’s only half the story. Both specific training AND muscle with a good base is important. His content gives a much different impression. Some of his older content mentioned parts of this i believe but all recent content especially within the last 3 months has been poor half baked advice imo that will leave beginners stuck who eventually want to learn strength skills

@@TheJackedVegan The dude has been in a bad mental state for the past few months. This happens when you are constantly in a plateau. Naturally, this negativity is reflected on his content. Man this is a good video and also depressing because it reminds me of myself. I have been training calisthenics since 2016 sometimes phases more dedicated than others. It's depressing because I want to planche and front lever but just never been able to train the right way for either of them. It's super frustrating. On top of that I haven't figured out recovery either. So basically I'll fall off training because of soreness or whatever and feel like I regress and then start some random hypertrophy workouts just stimulate my muscles again to hopefully start training skills again. All in all I'm just annoyed, frustrated and honestly just depressed because I feel like I have made really barely any progress in a long time. Ive been thinking about wanting to do 90 degree hasp and deep hspu for a long time now and I cannot do either of them. Sorry for the rambling I just feel lost.

Muscles will not lead to great skills but great skills and fundamentals will lead to great muscles. Something along those lines was what an 70-ish old man in my local calisthenics park told me like 10 years ago. Today I'm almost 25 and almost 200lbs with most skills mastered and the level of difficulty to keep them at that level is pretty non existent. So to say it easily to understand: 1. Focus on fundamentals, we all know what they are, they suck and are boring and repetitive but are fundamentals for a reason. This doesn't mean 20 to 50 reps, my wife can do that at 2 years of on and off training so be consistent and get those reps in !!! 2. Train your tendons and joint !!! I can't shout here but if I could I would, most of the guys get elbow and other joint or tendon injuries because of repetitive movements. So do your health work ! 3. Start slow and program for steady growth in skill level instead for fast results. My personal biggest pit fall, I would be 220 by now if I didn't do this stupid thing like programing my training for fast results. 4. Now it's time to micro-menage, water intake, sleep, diet, supplements, find what works for you and stick 90% to it, it will lead to superb growth and gains in all skills, strength and muscle. Don't think about this too early and don't listen too much to others but learn to listen to your own body !!! 5. Keep programing for steady skill growth and keep learning about everything and all you can, both science and bro-talk. They are both important and can be useful but be careful now to fall into the pitfall

Certainly, your video seems to touch on the fundamental relationship between muscle growth, strength, and the importance of neural adaptations. Muscles understand tension the basic principle in physics and It highlights how both calisthenics and bodybuilding contribute to muscle development, emphasizing that a more muscular physique is generally beneficial. So increasing muscle is highly beneficial for growth of strength as well. I say major factor.The discussion on strength brings attention to the combination of neural adaptations and muscle hypertrophy, emphasizing the multifaceted nature of building strength. Furthermore, skinny people are not so skinny they have good amount of muscle mass according to their relative strength of the body. In Calisthenics to learn skills you have to spend time on the progressions like the way to learn football you need to be spend more time on the ground instead of the gym.

3:02 Zdenek said building more muscle, but we should understand that he means muscle & strength at the same time right? He didn't mean only bulding muscle, it's something he thought he didn't need to explain and he decided just say building muscle 7:05 if you still think beginner should do tuck planche if they want the full planche, and going for 10 other progressions instead of building a strong shoulder in the first place, why don't you continue arguing with Ian Barseagle. Ian said the traditional way of training for skill by progressions is not effective, he said get up to +40kg weighted dips for 10 reps first, from then you can learn the planche 8:03 he didn't say or think static won't build muscle, but we all know it's the best to grow the muscle when it get both the concentric and the eccentric with the full ROM, the static doesn't as effective as that

Most pulling skills can be “learned” by doing just weighted pull ups and chin ups. Some pushing skills can be learned by having a great weighted dip but still need handstand training. Gain more relative and absolute strength and muscle and most skills only need a few months of tweaking to get perfect, as long as the strength is there.

I think the most logical path is to join a gymnast class where they have proven ways to gain the strength to do every maneuver ,there is no one stronger than a gymnast .But I respect what you are saying and I believe you say are saying what any gymnast will tell you,but I think it would be easier to go to a real gymnasium to use the correct equipment for strength training and from what a friend who is a former nationally ranked gymnast,he said a lot of the strength training takes two people,like for doing standing pull downs ,someone to hold you down so you don't lift yourself.
