The first boy that got into a car accident - he was so traumatized that his hzir turned white. The girl with birthmsrks all over her body - the humiliation and shame she endured because no one else had those ‘defects’ and dhe was embarassed. The last boy with his strict parents going berserk in church - not only was he embarassed by their behavior, but he discovered they were hypocrates because they wouldn’t let him have any outside actuvities (come home after school), yet they were ‘free’ to let loose in church.

There was no accident. There were no birth marks. These were excuses given to cover the physical abuse from their religious crazy parents.

I remember when this song came out I was a child. And I remember relating to it because I feel like it’s about that time in your life at about 7 to 9 years old where you start to question why things are the way they are, but don’t quite have the intellectual and emotional maturity explain things, so you just sit there, confused not knowing what to do.
@superdave7241

Absolutely magnificent song and the bridge is like a flood of bright light. So awesome! Three scenarios in this song but all about the same person, the writer. The smirk says it all. The car accident (s) in his past also gave the name... The birthmark on his back And the Pentecostal Church... Look at the people in the pews "lurching" and etc. the kid doesn't understand, but maybe he really does Getting it out in the air until the bridge and all that light comes down and the freedom that comes with it. So simple yet so brilliant!

Ok- I gotta admit- even I’m still learning- I was a teen when this came out- all we did was listen to the humming part and liked the rhythm- but mostly took it in a joking, light hearted way- never realized the lyrics were so serious- we had SO MUCH we listened to in the 80’s- so we (myself and a lot of others around me) liked this song but never really paid attention to all the words- Decades later..the more you know- 👍❤️✌️

At 71 (75 with the wind chill), I have to agree with you. It would be a shame getting old for nothing. The humming in this song is what we do when we ponder something, like how with an open mind we can change our opinion on important things.

Superman's Song is a fantastic song, and is what got me interested in these guys. I think the voice is what draws people in, and the subtle humor, but then makes them more one dimensional than they should be in the end. Always liked this song. Thanks Jayy!

They had limited success with three songs one of which was a cover version. The two of their own were like nothing else with this strange deep vocal and a curious writing style. The cover was a glossier version of XTC's "The Ballad of Peter Pumpkinhead", which is probably worth a listen in itself (as is the original XTC version).

The 3 children in the song stood out; they didn't conform. Other kids would say they were 'weird', and so likely targets of bullying from those other kids. So this is a song about being 'different' and the isolation that comes from being different, even if it wasn't due to anything you had control over. The video portrayed a play within a song performance. Kids who are different live their life on display, like they're on stage, and other kids act like they have the right to critique the 'different kids'. So this 'school performance' was of the lives of these 'different' kids. I believe the parents of the Accident Kid cringe briefly in the audience, but there is worse response of the Holy Roller Kid's parents, who react with disapproval & displeasure, maybe that their 'secret' is now openly public. The Holy Roller Kid certainly looked nervous seeing his parents in the audience. And that's how it is when your life is a public story, when others thoughtlessly and insensitively discuss what is for you your life. To backtrack a bit, there was the Birthmark Girl; did you notice the girls who came after her were all dressed like Sherlock Holms? They came at her with magnifying glasses. They were INTENT on knowing why she was so secretive. No respect for her or her wishes. Some people have no qualms about being invasive in other people's lives. The video is an interesting interpretation of the song. Not an exact factual representation, but artistically metaphoric.
