This is part of my Podcast on Spotify: open.spotify.com/show/42KTAPV...
In this video I answer a very interesting question I received from a viewer. His name is Christopher and he is struggling with motivation and direction in his life. He has chosen to study mathematics. He wants to know what is holding him back from embracing mathematics, or anything really. Do you have any advice or opinions? If so, please leave a comment below.

What is holding him back is not only a fear of failure, but the fear that he might not be what he claims and wants to be. And the next problem is just around the corner: what to do if he actually succeeds. He has to make a decision that defines his future. What if it's the wrong one? The idea of getting a job and choosing a carrier is frightening for some people, for others, it's not that big of a deal. They know that, whatever you do, everthing has pros and cons. And life passes anyway.

My advice to the OP, This is going to be hard, but learn to drop the ego. You can feel it in your writing, and I do think when your young the ego does help with confidence. You mentioned anxiety, the ego and anxiety feeds into one another. Once you learn to drop the ego, your anxiety will drop. As you let go, you liberate yourself. I had this issue myself.

Good thoughts! As an engineer, myself and most of my peers often say they that in practice they use very little of the hard knowledge they learned during college. I think that's often the case, and many times employers view the degree as demonstrating that you are qualified and capable of achieving what is needed for the specific job. Also, wanted to say not to get discouraged by others who "get it" before you do. Everybody thinks differently and brings something unique to the table.

Reminds me of the John Denver lyrics: “Lost and alone on a forgotten highway, Traveled by many, remembered by few, Looking of something I can believe in, Looking for something I’d like to do with my life.” I was once told, “If you don’t know where you are going, any road will take you there.” I knew where I wanted to be, but I repeatedly encountered “detour ahead, expect delays, re-calculating route.” It took a full decade after I graduated from college to reach “Pass GO! Collect $200.00” and I was on my way.

Can anybody recommend a statistics/probability book that leans heavily on linear algebra and calc instead of the typical intro book that shys away from those things?

Your fears hold you back. You say your anxiety holds you back and you claim being smart. Maybe it is a harsh thing to say but.. If you are what you claim to be, simply do not let fear and anxiety hold back. But how? Understand yourself better, your fears and causes of your anxiety as well. Know thyself is the saying. It seems to me you are your worst enemy at the moment. Nice clichés huh? The reason you not to act, basically "I don't do homework.", is that you think ahead of your time. You fear the incoming step where you do your homework but despite of that you still fail once again. So a potential possibility of the future, a bad case scenario holds you back. That fearful future has not yet to come, it can be altered. And that's your not ego. Telling that "it's my ego", is your ego. Which's feeding you lies to console yourself. Your ego is broken, it is hurting you, fix it. Ego should truly take care of one's self. Be what you claim to be. Step outside of this endless loop. And as the Sorcerer says, "just do it" and enjoy your trip. I am being intentionally harsh because I think you needed this, but I'd like to point out it's not malicious. I hope you the best Christopher, and good luck.

Yes. Learn logic and axiomatic set theory, then discover beauty that arises from imposing structure on a set (semigroups monoids groups rings fields modules vector spaces) and then study convergence and the world of the infinitesimal (real/complex analysis) and get a decent hold on the discrete (combinatorics/graph theory) and generalize your notion of geometry with some general topology. Get the best beginner books on those subjects, learning what those books are by reading online forums. Have multiple sources on a single subject and take your time, wading through all of the beautiful mathematics that is out there. Have fun and enjoy yourself.

Mathematician at Princeton? I think those who are at Princeton had bigger goals than that. If all you want to do is lecture then you’ll end us a high school teacher looking at illegal images on your computer.
