"There are no solutions, just trade offs" Thomas Sowell
“CEOs are in the business of making decisions” Sam Reese, Vistage CEO
I’ve been reflecting this week on a quote from Economist Thomas Sowell “There are no solutions, only trade-offs.”
I work with CEOs. They take decisions. They feel responsible for the consequences of these decisions. They often wait to find a “perfect solution” rather than take action today on a “less than perfect option”.
CEOs (and the rest of us) live in a world of finite resources - time, money, manpower. With every decision, we are indicating our priorities. Investing in a new project might drive growth but will divert resources from other key areas. Each choice has consequences that affect stakeholders within and outside your organisation.
There is no Perfect Solution
Hi, I’m Conor Neill, I speak and write about Persuasion, the art of Moving People to Action. I have the privilege of being father to two great little daughters. I live in Barcelona, Spain.

What is Persuasion?
* What does it take to move people to action?
* What does it take to have impact when you communicate?
* How can I inspire the people around me to be the best version of themselves?
These are questions that I answer. I answer these questions with tools that work for politicians, business leaders, entrepreneurs and professors.

The works of Thomas Sowell are worth reading. A brilliant mind and champion of individual liberty. To your point, acceptance is something to make friends with if you want a happy, meaningful and fulfilling life. Great video sir! ❤

Perhaps there is one, Conor. My inner guidance told me, in answer to the question: "What really matter to me?" The answer which came back (via my non-dominant hand) was: "You're after the peace that surpasses all understanding." Maybe that's a solution which isn't a trade off. Mind you, perhaps it is. It means working on dropping what we are not, and that is no mean fete.

Woah... this changes my view on life... especially the example about the gym and stretching, I've never considered it to be like this, like a trade-off, I give away Junk food and I receive a healthier diet, a better body etc.. THANK YOU SO MUCH!

I saw another aspect, when the government tries to come up with a solution for the public, there are always some that will be worse off, and when the "some* become the "most" , new changes will be made and again some will be worse off...

A wonderful brief reflection, also if in the mindset of accepting that everything is a tradeoff then you truly are in an open growth mindset. Wonderful thoughts Conor, I heard you in person many years ago and have only been indirectly re-introduced. I'm looking forward to future thoughts.

Love your comments on the discipline of finishing. How do you manage your emotions, I.e. stay positive/avoid bitterness if there is someone on your team who contributes little but takes credit for your work or ideas (may be less of a problem when you are CEO!). It seems like the consequences of dealing with interpersonal problems can be unpredictable. Really appreciate your comments on consequences here.
