There's 2 types of sling setups, 1 for those who have hike a lot with their rifles, and those who fight a lot with their rifles. Both are correct.

I'm a retired Marine, and I don't care how many videos I've seen, someone can always offer up a different perspective, so yeah, I watched it all. Some of it depends on the weapon. Body type and size matters. Your individual dexterity matters. Not everyone's joints move and bend the same way. What situation do you plan on being in the most? All of these things have to be taken into consideration. We can all start from a basic point, and once you have those basics down, you can tend and adjust to your own idiosyncrasies and physical characteristics. I thought it was a good video. A lot of people try and throw out too much or too nuanced information. That has its place, but most people in the civilian world just don't need to worry about things that much. If you're a train, train, train type person, then great. Then that stuff is for you. If not, it's much more like trying to find the right holster for concealed carry. Try a few things until you figure out what works best for your situation, and stick with it.

I tell a lot of guys who are transitioning back to civilian life that certain things you learned or expect in the military are absent in the civilian world and it applies to how you carry and fight with a gun. In the corps, you have support. Your team, squad, company all the way up. You are rarely truly alone when deployed. As a civilian, you don't have backup to call upon or fire support. Carrying a pistol for defense when you are out of the house is not the same mentality or even condition as you should always have it chambered and good to go. Conceal carry is almost alien to some dudes who come from the military even those trained and carry sidearms. Unless you are the specials who are trained in undercover work, guns are always shown and presented in an overt fashion. That's the military for you. And the ROE is absolutely different and can sometimes be annoying. You can't be overly aggressive but you can't be passive and you are always reacting to possible threats and always be mindful to how others react to you and your gun.

I carry single point voluntarily, and I'm the only person I know of in my work group that does it full time. I'm just used to it, and it also means I can easily disconnect my rifle whenever I need to. I understand that two point is much more stable and comfortable, but again, I'm just used to single point.

I did competitive rifle in high school (through the CMP) and we used the sling to help stabilize the rifle I incorporated that through my military career and now when I train. It is a whole different world especially when standing

I have a couple fancy Vickers sling. Now the Magpul RLS lives on most of my non-historic guns. I put period correct slings on guns like M1907's on M1903's & M1917's, GI Cotton Web Slings on M1's, etc.. But all my AR's with sling loops all have RLS slings. Then you can use them to carry, or loose like a Rhodesian or tight like a M1907 sling. Same with every .22 rifle, hunting rifle, shotgun, etc.. I do run a single point sling on the PS90 because PS90.

How you have it setup up in the beginning of the video is how I had mine set up for the longest time, but I recently switched to "right behind the grip/right in front of the magwell" method and I've really been liking that. The title of this video is very accurate because there's no way to run a sling that I actually REALLY like and I keep changing it around

This is how I run mine too because I’m a smol gent and helps me to tuck the stock under my armpit while reloading and just more comfortable with the gains in movement also learned from a guy with alot of experience to roll your rifle (optic to the ground) when stowed and it greatly improves from moving around

@@devrinmg I have the strap very very short when it's fully retained so I still have the nice stability like Hop talks about in this video, but I have one of those IWC sling QD Triglide adapters so I can make it a "single point" if I need that flexibility/mobility that's useful for flat-range (((combat))) stuff. It's been working out well so far, but I'll probably change it again sometime in the future lol

I do the same as you for two reasons. My sling gets caught on my gear less when dropping to the prone, and it gets in the way of my reloads less. Having QDs at the other two positions let me sling it better if I have to climb something or carry something/someone though.

Outboard on stock, rear of handguard is my preferred method, for me it has been the best balance of stability and maneuverability

Thats definitely my preferred, especially on a shorter rifle like a 10.5”, 11.5” etc.... plus the handguards i use already have qd mounts built into the rear. ... enough stability, especially when cinched down, but enough maneuverability to work the rifle. .... on something like my SPR where im probably going to take it off body to use the bipod prone, and the extra length ill go front of handguard

He moreover covered the pros and cons of wide point vs short point and not so much the best most balanced orientation for most people in my opinion (yalls too), which is outboard rear and center point, that's all..

Excellent, Hop! This is the first time I've heard anyone talk about the inherent stability of increasing the distance between rifle attachment points, but I heartily agree. As you say here, I wouldn't necessarily recommend my way of doing it to someone else; to each his own. But I find it most comfortable and situationally repeatable (whatever that means) for myself. Ive used a sharpie to premark adjustments on my sling for use in a T shirt, a plate carrier, and a thick winter jacket. This keeps my sling use consistent regardless of what I'm wearing. The position of the sling attachments for me depend on the purpose of the rifle. Some rifles are for hiking and patrolling with, others sacrifice the stability for manueverability. Again, pre marked with a sharpie

I think they do, but the sides and bottom don’t extend to the length of the gas block. And it’s quad rail only. I think it’s called the Gen2 two piece or something like that

An embarrassingly long time ago, I used the issue black nylon M16A2 sling belted to the rifle butt stock (loose or duct taped in place to allow charging handle function) and attached to the front sight post with a green PX bungie cord. It made me the envy of everyone who actually had to carry the M16A2 on ruck marches. The Warrior Poet Society Sling is a close approximation but with magnetic quick release and the stretchy rubber portion meant for the rear of the rifle. Not to mention QD attachments and a 1000% higher production quality. While I still prefer my own it's a pretty good option and, despite what some people think, you don't have to accept John Lovell as your Lord and Savior to buy one.

@@HWG-wm8ld I saw a couple with 550 cord. But 550 cord doesn't stretch. A bungie cord holds the rifle to the body. Though that still worked better than just holding a rifle on a 10 mile ruck.

The spaced out sling setup seems to be a favorite in the army. The more narrow setup seems to be a SEAL favorite. I will say that the way SEALs stow their rifle is safer and provides more maneuverability. They essentially turn the rifle inboard while placing the rifle nose vertically down on their 7 o'clock. It's refreshing to see a video with this perspective. When I started buying slings for my rifle I remember attaching them in various ways and thinking this works but this doesn't. Then I watched a hunch of KZfaq videos with guys saying *this* is how you do it, and it looked like what they were doing really worked, but since it wasn't *perfect* for me I thought I was taking crazy pills (turns out that was ecstasy l, but I digress) anyway it's nice to hear someone say not only can you run your sling however you want, there also is not one way that is perfect for every person in every situation.

I compete in run and guns and from what I've seen, everyone has the rear attachment where Hop does. However, the front point varies by personal preference. The one note that Hop didn't address is that with qd attachments, you can have it at the end of the handguard for while you are hiking and running and then move it on close for when you need the maneuverability. That's what a lot of competitors do

I personally really like magpul’s sling clips. So much better than standard QD. Especially if you are in dusty or muddy conditions. If you have ever had a QD packed with mud from laying prone you know how hard it is to get the mud out so you can detach it. Magpul’s paraclip stuff is definitely my go too anymore 🤙🏴🦍

After all of the years that I’ve been shooting ARs, I would have figured I knew best how to run my sling, but truthfully, I don’t. I feel like it depends on so many things, including the setup of the rifle, how I’m holding the rifle, whether I’m going to be spending a lot of time at low ready, whether I’m doing certain lifts in the gym, etc. But really, my sling setup changes almost with my mood. The only consistency I’ve found in my choices: On guns with shorter barrels and/or vert grips, I tend to run my sling narrow (back of the receiver and back edge of the rail, nearest to the mag well), while on longer guns with AFGs or hand stops that I’ll C-clamp, I want to run it long (QD attachment points at the furtherest point forward on the rail, and on the stock).

My solution (not my recommendation) is car-15 stock because of the slot it has on top of the stock, sling is kept to the outside. Magpul para sling mount up front on the inside. Im just not a fan of qd mounts. Works for me! And hop, if you need another project to explore, like bullpup, battle rifle, and spr series youve tackled, I'd be interested in seeing you explore the AR LMG / AR RPK concept. Get brass facts along for the ride too ha. Anyways, Merry Christmas!

I'd say the closer the engagement distance the more mobility you want. Shorter barrels, and red dots, are also better suited for 0-300m range.

The only thing that is missing is how the different attachment points work going prone and/or trying to get more stability of the sling in that position. "Slings in the Wild" is a good book on slings overall.

I like the ESD sling with 5-6 inches off the back end while QD-ing it to the back of the strong side of the stock, and back of handgaurd on the weak side. Keeps the rifle high and tight as the far-forward-and-back setup would when hanging against my chest, keeps the sling behind my support hand, good stability when 'stowing' the rifle, and it's very close to being in a sweet spot when fully tightened to at least shoot and reload without swimming out of the sling. I wish I had my 80 bucks I spent on the warrior poet sling back. Something about the thin, smooth straps of the ESD gives me the warm fuzzies, and the epitome of 'low drag'.

Use $3 surplus slings from gun shows in Indy or I use reversed Cobra for British 3 point (Canookian 2 point) or CW sling, $12 at gun store. Someone get Hop coffee.

I've done some training under an ex Ranger qualified/contractor buddy of mine and he flat out told me that 99% of the time when he gets into a gunfight or 100% of the time before he enters a building, his support hand goes underneath to halfway swim out & his sling goes around his neck like you did near the end of the video, basically being used as a one-point - otherwise the sling runs a higher risk of taking the user's attention away from the surroundings at the worst possible time.

Only difference that might help is that when you have the tight loop sling set up, try attaching the sling to the opposite side of the receiver the same way you would when attached to then end of your stock. Seems to make a huge difference for me at least.

For an average guy who works for a living, I visit the range less than I’d like. But I research and practice the theory when I can. I am learning and your videos (videos like this) help me take in considerations I wouldn’t normally think of. I live in a populated area and it’s hard to go apply these skills, so I unfortunately tend to study more than act. But I still feel I’ve learned a lot from these informational videos and just want to say thank you.

Practice at home or replicate your rifle with an airsoft proxy and go play a match there; or take a class near you. Plenty of ways to practice moving with your gear on that isn't always going to the range.

I ran the sling in the 2nd configuration with the rear part attachment point of the sling hooked on the left side between the receiver and the buffer tube, and the front point of the sling at the end of the receiver (far back on the hand guard). If I wanted to keep it tight to my body I would just flip the rifle upside down.

The sciences way to say that is that the further away the sling points are, the less slack and more torque they each have. When they are closer together, it's like having a crank in low gear, you can have more slack and move the rifle around more without torquing down the sling.

With a two point sling, I have mine at the extreme ends of the rifle like you explain at the beginning of the video, but when in use I swim out with my support arm. That way, the sling is just around the back of my neck. If the rifle is getting “slung” then I swim my arm back in for admin activities or just standing around. If in an operation status, it stays around the back of my neck. For my LE use case, I find it works best.

@@2A.Freedomyeah, it’s not perfect. A pistol transition is still possible though. Maintain support hand grip while releasing the shooting hand to reach for pistol. Move the rifle down and to your support side, pretty much pointing the rifle somewhat backwards while drawing your pistol. Hard to explain. But training smooths out the wrinkles which I’ve done plenty of. There’s a bunch of different ideas each with compromises. I trade off a slightly smoother pistol transition for more maneuverability with the rifle such as for reloads and malfunction clearing.

I personally run sling right behind where my support hand grips the rifle. I find it gives that happy medium between the different types. Rear attach is always rear of the stock, outboard/strong side. It just works.

I put my AR pistol sling at the rear of the receiver, and the front of the forend. If ATF man is around, I can press out against the sling, and it naturally pulls the pistol brace into my chin for a chin weld.

I like options. QD at the end plate, QD at the back of the stock. Paracord cinch loop around the rail. Front of the sling can be adjusted to anywhere along the length of the rail, rear of the sling has two attachment points.

We used to have the following policy for the same setup as Hop runs (far forward, far back): - when on long patrol you had your sling being on maximum retention that still allowed for aiming and shooting - after couple of shots or when beeing on high probability of contact partrol, you would loose the retention using quick retention strap - when needing maximum movability of rifle, you would move your left arm out of the sling.

Never a bad time for a sling discussion. I think about my slings and all the parts i chose everytime I look, clean, dry fire, shoot my rifles and go, "How am i liking this set-up and feel?" Lol

After trying all the different configurations I too have found that attaching to the front of the rail and opposite side of the stock works best for me.

I prefer all the way back on the stock on the outside and relatively close to the back of the handguard. So essentially option 2 you've shown. For me that hits the sweet spot a little better than the way you do it. With option 1 i feel like no matter what i do, it gets in the way for my arm. Option 3 is really not for me, i feel lile the rifle just jumps all over the place when i do the tiniest of movements

I remember getting in an argument in AIT because Someone didn't like that I had my sling short and tight. I told him as I was told by my Drill Sergeant "that a soldier carries there weapon and the sling is only to be used when one has to carry something else in there hands" he told me that his Drill Sergeant was an infantryman and he said to have it as loses as possible so that you could shoot while having the sling and you couldn't carry a weapon for 12 miles without it slinged. I told him that yes one absolutely could because I had and he was just lazy and that if he tried to run while carrying something in his hands he would bang the weapon on his knees. I feel dumb for arguing but he was dumb for trying to correct me.

Appreciate the content Hop! I’ve kind of come to the conclusion that just having multiple points to QD the sling in and out of is the best move possible for any situation that could happen. Of course if you don’t want all the options than the long 2 point style makes sense

I use a magpul sling that I can convert from a double point to a single point sling quickly. It uses a clip on one end. That helps with the best of both words for stability or maneuverability. I can't get on board with using the rear sling point on the outboard side of the stock though. It just doesn't sit right on my chest with it attached to the outboard side.

As I learn/shoot more, I may change, but inside stock and swim out to shoot (every time) works best to avoid there being any sling in the way when I'm shooting. I was taught the sling need not be used when shooting--maybe using the sling for shooting is when you get more advanced and experienced, but again, this is how I was taught. When it's on the outside of the stock, I feel it, and I want it gone. When moving and not shooting, it's easy to swim in and sinch, which also works better with it inside..

Hook the sling to your carry handle and it is technically correct. Carry handle is for carrying and a slingis to also help you carry your firearm around.

In basic, when we got our slings (99.9% the time they literally had us carry the damn rifles with the slings on but not have them actually slung on us), they were all put on the same. However, we would all use it differently- I started wrapping it around the barrel (my M4 had all 4 full foregrip panels on it's rails; i was a lucky one apparently) for a bit more comfort while holding and shooting and keeping the damn thing just out of the way. I saw someone wrap it around the pistol grip itself, which looked awkward as hell but worked for him. it's down to how you want to do it.

I tend to run my slings the way that you do. Especially on my bullpup rifles. I have to ARs that I need to get sticks that have WD mounts on both sides.

Those magpul MOE rifle stocks beg to have the sling on the loop beneath the toe of the stock. I run a two point there to the, support side, front of the hand-guard with a QD swivel. Bonus is it works with AK’s, too.
