FATALITY? ...OR FLAWLESS VICTORY?! Mortal Kombat Full Movie Reaction Watch Along: / thereelrejects
With the Mortal Kombat 1 Beta Out August 18th + The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles joining Street Fighter 6 & the video game movie adaptation Gran Turismo in theaters now, we watch 1995's MORTAL KOMBAT!! John & Roxy Striar give their Movie Reaction, Breakdown, and Review of the '90s Cult Classic Paul WS Anderson (Resident Evil, Monster Hunter) movie featuring Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa as Shang Tsung alongside Ed Boon's beloved MK fighters Liu Kang, Johnny Cage, Scorpion, Sub-Zero, Kitana, Sonya Blade, Kano, Reptile, Christopher Lambert's iconic performance as Raiden, & MORE! We react to all the badass fight scenes & most iconic moments including the "Enter Sub-Zero and Scorpion" Scene, the "Those were $500 Sunglasses" scene, "Sub-Zero vs. Liu Kang", "Sonya Blade Fights Kano", "Scorpion vs Johnny Cage", "Flawless Victory", "Reptile Attack", and so many more campy, cheesy, badass sequences.
NOTE FOR KZfaq: All violence depicted onscreen is part of a fictional movie that was carefully choreographed and performed by professionals. Audiences will understand this. And again - it's all campy as hell lol.

Fun Fact 2: The original motive for Scorpion and Subzero working together was written that they were friends. But members of the Test Audience didn't like how this didn't feel true to the lore, so the director had Shang Tsung say how they were "Deadliest of enemies, but slaves under my power."

I wonder how Sub Zero got into that position... 🤔 I mean, I get that Scorpion is under Shang Tsung's power cause he's clearly a wraith already but Sub Zero is alive, so how the hak does Shang Tsung gain power over BI-HAN?? Shouldn't he be wraith then therefore Noob Saibot instead of Sub Zero? Also, fun fact 3: Sub Zero and Scorpion are brothers now in the MK1...

Kano was played by Trevor Goddard who sadly died in 2003. He was also a mercenary in another cult classic called Deep Rising with Treat Williams. Goddard's last cinematically released role was in Pirates Of The Caribbean, and his only line was "Say goodbye" to which Orlando Bloom replies "Goodbye". Edit: Robin Shou was an absolute weapon on this movie... he would judge how good his fight scenes were by how many of his own bones got broken, and would do takes repeatedly until he got injured... just to make the movie look better.

Yes, the fans wanted a PG 13 version of a R rated bloody violent it game. It's a fun movie. They come close to nailing the violence. Some weak choreography in a movie that needs to excel at that too. Not everywhere. Just in some places.

@jean-mi1825 9 ай бұрын
@@popculturewatch8689 I see your point, and agree with it mostly. I'm the first to admit it was FAAAAAR from a perfect movie or adaptation 👍🏻🤣! But I believe that the (hard) PG13 was better than the poorly rendered CG blood filled R of the recent one. And I also believe most fan wanted fights, the characters they knew and loved, and an actual MK rather than the laughable "family drama" of the remake. And about the fights, yes they were not as spectacular (or bloody) as the one from the games (or the remake), but they did it MOSTLY practical, with the limitations of their budget and the SFX of the time (as far as I'm concerned, the puke inducing 'quality' of the SFX from the sequel proves that they did a good job with this one 😱🤣!!).

Loved this movie when I was 6 years old! Been one of my favorites since! Brandon Lee, originally, was going to play either Liu Kang or Johnny Cage, but sadly this would never happen as Lee died of an accidental gunshot wound to the chest in 1993, a whole year before production for the movie started. Steven Spielberg, a huge fan of the video game, was going to have a Cameo in the movie as Cage's director, but he turned it down and a look alike was hired instead. Cameron Diaz was cast as Sonya Blade, but dropped out after she broke her wrist during training. Brigette Wilson was cast in the role.

What I loved about this movie is that the producer who was over this, ACTUALLY DID HIS HOMEWORK.... The fact that they teased actually GAMERS to MORTAL KOMBAT by showing you places in the movie from the game. Like THE PIT, or OUTWORLD, is why THIS MORTAL KOMBAT IS BETTER THAN THE NEWEST ONE....

To answer her question on why Kitana wasn't killed.. She's the daughter of Shao Khan (big baddie at the end) who is the emperor of Outworld. Shang Tsung is not allowed to kill her because Shao Khan is his master. As for Raidens motivation he's just responsible for gathering earths best warriors to partake in the tournament. And being an Elder God he's forbidden to partake in the tournament personally.

This was a big deal for all the Mortal Kombat players back in the day. I saw this in the theaters and loved it. I think it came out after MK2 was already out. MK song was a big hit and sold a lot more CD's than they thought it would. This movie came out when I was 9yrs old. My Father R.I.P. took me to see this and the sequel. The film was kind of aimed at fans who knew the lore from the first 3 games and MK Trilogy, as well as the comics. Unfortunately they relied too much on people knowing the lore which is why the story was a bit convoluted. Johnny and Sonya slowly developed a relationship through the lore where he was hell bent in rescuing her from the Emperor. Liu and Kitana where one of those will they won't they loves due to circumstances of their situations. These were ignored for the film to focus on the fights which worked against it. However to many young fans, including myself, we loved it when it released.

This is still my favorite video game movie overall!! Love it, you can tell the guys who made this are MK fans. Long live MK man! Also, FYI the Johnny Cage nut punch is one of his signature moves from the game and inspired by Van Damme from Bloodsport (the whole point of Johnny Cage's concept) that wasn't in there for pure comedy purposes but I can see how normies would think that.😅 I can tell these two are a little lost because they're not familiar with the canon in the games....even in the games story fights were almost random at times, it's organized better than this movie but it's pretty much just fight after fight. Kitana was helping Earthrealm more specifically Liu Kang because she saw that he was good and strong enough to beat Shang Tsung, her realm of Edenia was taken over and merged with Outworld by Shao Kahn which she explains but I take it Roxy missed that part. Deep down she despises Shao Kahn and Shang Tsung. She was forcibly adopted by Shao Kahn and ordered to work with Shang Tsung. The reason why they couldn't do any brutal, gory fatalities is due to the time period catering to the younger demographic in the 90's compared to now. Christopher Lambert, Cary and Linden Ashby are in a lot of stuff. Liu Kang and Kitana really just started liking each other here they develop more in the next movie and as Roxy says "makey outey" lol in one scene they do almost kiss but get interrupted.

For all the Cheesyness and campiness, this movie is actually a pretty good video game adaptation. -It as some of the most important and recognisable charavters of the game. -The fights takes places in Decors that are pretty much the same as the stages in the game -Each fighter has his/her special move For people my generation who where Arcades addicts, this movie is an absolute gem. And it really made me feel something when they used the MK theme song in the trailers for MK11. (SHort story, even tho EVERYONE and their dogs associate MK with the theme song, Netherrealms studios actually din't had the rights for the Song, since it was made for the movie and not a part of the game. So evne tho they could use it, they had to pay for it if they ever did, to the dismay of fans, they never did. Till MK11 where they found an agreement with the studio to use a remixed version of it, wich had a PHENOMENAL impact on the game's visibility and sales. The game's and movie fans where waiting for 30 years, to finaly have their Titular theme song BE in their game)
