Thank you so much for this tutorial! I went along with your exact recommendation of using TFX and it works amazingly well, my temps are lower and so is my fan curve. I’ve had my deck about a year and to my surprise when I opened it up the paste was actually very dry and crackling, so good thing I changed it- thanks again mate I even posted my process on Reddit and shouted you out ha! Subbed btw 👌

@@NJ-Tech I’ve been testing it with a few AAA games like tomb raider & uncharted and the FPS is actually about 5-10% higher and generally more consistent too meaning I can lock to 40fps nicely. This means my deck has been thermal throttling for a while, I think this needs more awareness as I didn’t even realise I was losing performance

Same here, - around 6 degrees C at least. Together with my JSAUX cooler fan, temp drops more than 20 degrees C in sum possible! Thanks for sharing this information! But man, - this paste is tough as chewing gum. 😂

Tried this and was very patient. Unfortunately my deck is experiencing crashes after a few minutes of gaming and occasionally artifacts everywhere. I know other have ppl have better luck but there’s also those who bricked their decks doing this. Gonna do some more testing before reaching out to valve though. Initially my temps were about 6 degrees lower, I also have the jsaux backplate. After about 10 minutes the thermal pad on the back plate became scorching hot. I know it’s suppose to but this was unbearable. The weird thing was that game overlay showed temps in the low - mid 70s Update: just be careful. I cleaned off the paste and tried again. So far so good, it’s been about 6 hours . Ff7 remake 1850 on gpu and 4000 on cpu settles at 85 degrees

@ericmeiring2512
@ericmeiring2512 Жыл бұрын
From other reviews I have see for them they work as good as low end thermal paste. But you never have to change them again. My bet is the decks paste isn't top of the line so the pad probably won't make a difference. But with new heat sink it would still end up cooler in my opinion. Waiting till end of year and I'm going to dabble in this stuff. Give company's more time to get stuff to market.

Would Thermal Grizzly Kyronaut suffer from "pump out"? Its what I've used on most of my stuff in the past.
@tookule4skool
@tookule4skool 2 ай бұрын
I had to look this up as I wasn't familiar with it but it looks like that would be the case. Due to the low mounting pressure and the thiness of the stuff used on desktops you have to use a thicker paste specifically made for laptops. I think you have to user a thicker paste like the one shown in the video or something like Thermal Grizzly's Kryonaut Extreme, or Gelid GC Extreme. If you happen to use an alternative please report back on the performance.

Yeah, I think with my first attempt using diamond (when I finally got it to actually stick to the cpu) I used too much and the thermals were not great so I had the fun of re-doing it hehe. Heating up the tube first helped a lot if I remember right, like either I put it on a radiator for a while or stuck it in boiling water hehe, forget really. I probably have some left in a tube somewhere but I just went back to good old arctic silver etc after that haha. I am a bit tempted to do something about my deck I guess since I have one of the early whiney fan versions but I might wait until I have some other reason to open it up like a new ssd... and put some pads or something on to try and reduce fan noise also while I'm at it :)

I changed the thermal paste for TFX following your guide but I had several problems... Firstly, once the battery was reconnected, the Deck wouldn't start. The LED was flashing white but nothing was happening, it took me several hours and several manipulations to get it to start up again. Then the games wouldn't start. The Deck would start up, I'd get the interface, but for each game I'd get the Steam loading logo but no game would launch. After several restarts, it would launch in desktop mode and finally in game mode. In the end, the temperatures are exactly the same, with only 1 or 2 degrees difference. So for me it's more of a waste of time than anything else, and I'm rather disappointed as I was expecting at least 5° less...
@NJ-Tech
@NJ-Tech 11 ай бұрын
Ah dude sorry to hear all your troubles. Btw are you running the updated fan curve? Because I'm pretty sure that works to a temp curve, and besides the deck will always run hotter in that mode to achieve a quieter fan. I always run the original fan profile. Change it and see if that then brings things more in line with mine.

I'm here because I bought a deck used as was impatient waiting for a restock. then 2 weeks later they went on sale 10% off lol. But my Deck keeps hitting 90 degrees c and then thermal throttling down to 400 mhz making my games run at 6 to 9 fps and googled it and found information saying it's a overheating issue that could be cause by when i changed out the SSD i might have let the fan cable go near electro magnetic sources or things along those lines. someone changed the paste but got no real change in temps just wquieter fans, So i came across your video. do you think this will stop my issue. as It65 is so annoying. just about to kill the griffin in the witcher then my FPS tanks and the whole system is unusable till it stops. happens in lots of games too. I haven't noticed it if I run a game on desktop mode yet which is odd. But I am sure I have just been lucky or maybe desktop mode doesn't add the extra processing power that the gaming mode adds and maybe that is why. But I bet it will do it in desktop mode as well If I give it long enough. I will watch the end of the video and then maybe buy some. Or wait for your reply see what you think. I don't really want to take it apart again just to see if something is not in it's correct place etxc. But I only changed the SSD. Maybe it's why it was sold in the first place. I just hope it is fixable. cheers. Oh btw I have some Arctic MX5 from when I built my PC is it worth trying with that stuff? yeah mine is 52 degrees 53 degrees idle in the steam os. I will take it apart tomorrow try the Arctic MX5 first unless you say you think that is a bad Idea. If you get back to me. Edit. 48 to 50 in idle now. I didn't wait. still loads more than yours. best temp drop i've had (minus using liquid metal) is from PTM7950. Max temps dropped from around 81 to around 73. The gulikit joysticks are trash anyway. Yeah they might be hall effect, which increases longevity, but as far as accuracy goes, they are garbage, which I think matters more than durability personally. A stick that needs replacing after 2 years, and is accurate, is far better than a stick that lasts 6 years but is inaccurate and overly sensitive.

@@NJ-Tech Nothing to do with being careless, its good practice to do so when working with electronics. Steam Deck is very sensitive to static discharge, more than most, and not having yourself grounded either is asking for trouble. Many decks have been killed dead by not taking the time to do this. Cleaning a silicon chip with capacitors/transistors around it full of charged power is a recipe for disaster, not to mention using liquid @ less that 100% when cleaning, whilst the electronics are still filled with charge. Don't open your deck, leave tinkering to those that know what they're doing. No harm in following your own advice but don't call me out on something you clearly know nothing about and by the sounds of it have no qualification in. Thanks for video, but just remember, that there are those out there who are not as 'careful' as you, and grounding before working on any electronics, along with removing power source, is a wise thing to do beforehand. Many out there can't even get the screws out properly without stripping them?, so god forbid they accidentally hit the power button half way through this procedure. Not going to lie I did remove the aluminum plate because I saw no point to it. All I did was restrict airflow. You want all those little black rectangular squares to be cooled that will tell you why because that is your ram and if your ram runs hot it will start to throttle and that’s when he start to get the little lag spikes. Also, I put thermal pads on the batteries to keep the battery cool because the battery can get extremely hot and with my thermal pads on it it keeps it pretty cool and then I bought a $10 external fan off of Amazon that runs off a USB even on low because it has three settings low medium and high it will keep my steam deck running cooler than yours.

I’m not sure what brand electric screwdriver you were using but you should be very careful on retaining the screws because if they are over tighten any puncture since they are a lot of layers on the steamdeck, you can damage electronics with that I went with the HOTO non-electric screwdriver, and it works amazingly, and I can hand tighten the screws to my liking. I have been taking apart graphics cards and having them run cooler by adding thermal paste and thermal pads and getting rid of the old thermal paste because it’s usually pretty crappy so I’m pretty good at what I do and as you can see, they put way too much thermal paste. You don’t really want it to smear like that what you should do is put it on there and spread it and then sit it on because that is a mess.

I did make that last comment before seeing you hand tighten so great job, but there is better thermal paste out there and I would recommend a grizzly

Dang dude yours idles at 40 that’s crazy. My idols at 29 Celsius I’m telling you grizzly is the best and yes buy thermal pads for those rectangular squares and cover them and uncover the aluminum casing it is stupid

85°c is completely normal for the steam deck these things are only supposed to last about a year or 2 until the next model comes out
