Is your thermostat not turning on the heat? It does not fire up the furnace when it is supposed to and the temperature in the house keeps dropping? If your home thermostat is not keeping, reaching the set temperature, or not turning on the furnace when the temperature goes down, there is likely a problem going on that does not actually involve the thermostat. Many people immediately suspect the thermostat being bad but in this video I go over many other things that could be causing an issue like that. Here are all of the videos I referenced:

Thanks for your videos. Helped save me a bunch on a service call or furnace replacement that the company said I needed, over the phone, without an inspection. I removed a rubber line blew the little bit of water out of it, and it fired right up. Your videos are right on without the blah,blah, unnecessary B.S. as in other KZfaq videos. Again, thanks. This was totally helpful. A 2 year old furnace was not running regularly on schedule. After watching this video I learned I can look up error codes from the furnace. I originally thought it was my thermostat but that checked out fine. It was really easy to find to just look through the site glass and see the blinking red LED "telling me" that the air flow was wrong which lead me to check the filter. It was totally blocked. Just simply cleaning it fixed the problem. Probably saved me from burning out the motor. Will check the filter more regularly. Thanks for posting this.

Hi Jay, I love the enthusiasm you put into your videos. As you say I can ask you a question. Here it is: I have an air Handler unit made by First Co. of Dallas, Model no. 48 HBQB. It's a tall box with a hot water heat exchanger, radiator, at top of the tall (3 ft) box, and a freon evaporator at the bottom. My 75 gal water heater in the garage feeds the radiator in the winter, and my AC compressor feeds the evaporator in the summer. The problem I have is in the winter when the heat exchanger is on and the LUX thermostat is set at 72. Often the heat does not shut off the hot water flow or the blower, and the house temp could rise to 80+, 85 or more. I changed thermostat from Honeywell to LUX, and also changed thermostat batteries but it didn't help either. Often I would remove the front of the thermostat to force it to shut down and it still wouldn't. So what I also learned to do is switch the thermostat dial from heat to AC and then to off, and that seems to shut it down, but not always. Also I replaced the relay inside the air handler twice, and that didn't help, so frustrating. Have you experienced this before, or do you have any suggestions for me to do?. Thank you

Almost 90% of the time when my furnace wont turn on it is the flame sensor. If your furnace cycles and the gas lights only to turn back off about 10 seconds later right before the blower starts...most likely (but not always) it's carbon build up on the flame sensor. I believe he has a video about that one too (for which I have been very appreciative since it has saved me a ton of money). It's pretty easily accessible and you can even clean it with a new dollar bill (yes that is true). I use a nonabrasive pad, and voila! My furnace then works

When looking at these fixes for my furnace, I had a different problem but a super simple one. One of the removable furnace panels has a switch/button that will depress when the cover is on. My cover was not on appropriately and that’s why it wouldn’t turn on. Good luck!!

Jay, I love all your videos, I've been subscribed and watching them for years, they are some of the best out there! I know you covered the air intake may be blocked, but in a blizzard and extreme cold weather couldn't another issue be that the exhaust flue for the furnace, especially if vented vertically through the roof, be covered in snow/ice? When the system cycles off, if its cold enough outside, the melted snow around the flue could have frozen over the top of it. It could also be a reason why a carbon monoxide detector inside a home may have been activated. I think that's an easy thing to check by looking up at the roof or out a 2nd floor window, if the exhaust flue for the furnace is visible. Do you think that could be a feasible option? I'd like to know your honest opinion. Thanks again for your clear and detailed videos. I'm sure you're still glad you left MN after all this snow😀

Thank you!! I appreciate that you are a long term subscriber and love the videos! Yes, what you are talking about is very possible! I've had times when a pressure switch issue was caused by exactly what you described. An iced over chimney cap. I also worked for a gas company and when I was on-call I had to go to emergency carbon monoxide calls, those were sometimes caused by blocked chimneys too, just as you explained. Thank you for bringing this up in the comments, this is indeed another easy thing to check that I forgot to add to my little list of easy things to check. 😅 I am sure your comment will help some folks out down the road. And yes! I can't say we miss the frigid cold.. Aloha from Hawaii my friend, have a marvelous New Year!!

Thank you so much I couldn't understand why my condo was 66 degrees inside when the thermostat is set at 68 and it was intermittently turning on. I took the air filter out and put it back in now it's working. My A/C guy told me not to use the pleated filters because they restrict air flow he suggested the reusable air filters. I tried the reusable filters and once I remove and clean it I can't put it back in the a/c unit they are too flexible and will not stay in place.

Any idea if concentric furnace vents go bad inside or need replacing? I replaced my inducer blow motor assembly bc my furnace wasn’t running and the motor was hot and opened it up inside and had broke fan teeth. One the new one was installed furnace kicked on no problem. Now when it falls before the set temperature and doesn’t to turn on it cycles inducer motor starts but blower does not kick on, and can hear the pvc pipe right where the exhaust and intake connect into the concentric vent tubing like clicking. If I reset the system and turn the temperature back up on the Nest it turns on ran for 15min and shut off again. Air filters are pretty new and same as always used, flame sensor is clean. Can’t figure it out

Glad to hear that! 22 years is middle aged so may it still last you at least another 10 years! The brand does not matter too much but I would probably go for a Trane if it's available. More importantly, I prefer a standard efficiency 80% furnace over a high efficiency 90%+ furnace. But law makers are doing their best to outlaw the standard efficiency furnaces so that may not even be an option for you down the road.

Jay, more great advice, I love your tutorials on getting AC units & furnaces up & running. I have a similar question on my Heatilator fireplace. When I flip the switch to start the spark igniter it normally doesn’t spark & I have to flip the switch 10-20 times and then it sparks long enough for the pilot valve to push out some gas & then heat up the thermocouple & away we go. Is there a troubleshooting technique for me to test if it the small control box isn’t creating spark voltage or spark wires causing the problem. Tried to look at control wires with multimeter but can seem to see any difference if it’s sparking or not? Thank
@WordofAdviceTV
@WordofAdviceTV Жыл бұрын
Unfortunately I have limited experience with fireplaces so can't give you a direct answer. If this is a push button ignitor, perhaps it is a weak battery? If it is a switch style, then have you tried cleaning and inspecting the ignitor and thermocouple for any dirt or cracks in the insulation? I would look for loose connections too, take the cover off the switch and look inside of there. Sometimes it's something obvious that can be seen right away. (like a broken terminal)

I have a problem with the thermostat. When I set the temperature to heat up, say to 75 degrees, and turn the slide switch on at the bottom, it reaches the set temperature of 75, but due to the cold weather the temp keeps dropping and it is not auto starting (detecting the drop in temp). But if I go and turn on the switch at the bottom manually to off and then turn it on, the furnace starts up. Any idea what could be the problem? Thermostat/furnace is 20 years old, honeywell. Thanks.

Hi. Does anyone know what model this is? I’m trying to find a video on why the up and down arrows don’t work anymore and how to, hopefully, fix it. You have to push them extremely hard to try to increase or decrease the heat. The heater works fine. It’s only the up and down arrows that are giving me trouble. Thanks!

Sometimes it can be the thermostat though, however in those situations, it's an easy fix. Just pick up a new one from the hardware store, and wire it in just like the old one. I have two furnaces in my house and they both stopped producing heat at the same time. One was due to a failed thermostat that suffered from an overdue battery replacement where the battery leaked and ruined the PCB. The other was due to furnace issues; a failed gas valve (easy replacement fix) and a lo-hi pressure switch that would only switch on low. The former was easy to spot because despite a good glowplug, the furnace wouldn't light (no loud click when the gas valve was commanded to open). The latter was also easy to spot because the induction fan would constantly rev up and down - classic symptom. $800 in parts (mostly the gas valve) later and we're back in business

What would be the cause if the red light is not on at all. Heater works and then just shuts off red light off. Changed thermostat and worked for a while and just shut off, I had to take off the panels and start it by hand and it will start .

Oh man, I saw the beginning of the video and it was the exact same problem I was having… but then you didn’t really go over how to know if the thermostat is bad so I’m not sure now. I have a boiler so no filters to check :/ replaced the battery in the thermostat and it didn’t affect it. I have two zones and it’s only one that does this where it’ll say like 64 or 63 degrees when it is set for 68 and just not kick on right away. But I know it’s not the boiler because on the other zone if I change the temp setting at all the boiler kicks on no problem and runs fine until it reaches the target temp. I was wishing for another way to check if it really is just the thermostat somehow failing even though it is programmed right and reading the temperature right. It just started behaving this way out of the blue with no changes to how it was programmed too.

New furnace runs fine for about 90 mins in the am, then turns off and does not turn back on. Therm temp showing 68 ambient, and I have it set to 72. It is showing System On, but furnace not turning on. If I turn the therm to Off, then back to Heat again, it will turn on. This same sequence happened with new Honeywell T6, so I put my old Honeywell CT3200 on, and same issue. If it is calling for heat (System On), it should be running right?? No error codes on furnace. Thanks!

What about the batteries in the thermostat. They could be weak causing it not to turn on the furnace at the proper setting.

I moved into this rental home that has an older style 2GIG Thermostat. I cannot figure out how the heck to fix it and have tried reading the manual but never got anywhere. It is digital of course. While both heat or cooling mode, the temperature that you have set that you want the temperature to be, must be TWO degrees different from the actual temperature displayed for the a/c or heat to turn on. Is there a way to change that, so that it will turn on with only ONE degree difference between the temperature setting and actual room temperature displayed? This would help our household tremendously and I know there must be a solution. Thank you in advance, if anyone knows.
