Modern materials and coatings have revolutionized the piston ring. Gone are the old days of thick iron rings that produced high friction and wear. Today's pistons rings are thinner, lighter, low friction and they last 2 to 3 times longer than those old iron rings.

Agree 100%! In hind sight, I wish I’d known 6 years ago what I’ve learned from you in the past few months. I can’t wait to tear my old 1937 Hudson coupe apart & see what smaller modern pistons with a thin modern ring package & the proper multi-hone package would do for it! I had to put OEM “pinned” rings back in it when I re-freshened the engine 6 years ahi. OEM sizes: top ring 3/32”, 2nd groove 3/32”, 3rd groove 3/16” & bottom groove 3/16”,. Yep 4 rings & at those thicknesses it will be very interesting to see what modern technology will do for it! Let me know if you need an old test subject! 😊

@TotalSealPistonRings .... I understand the "plus side" of the equation on rings. AND... last year, I had when going through ring selection for a mild performance SBC 383 marine build with Keith on the phone and in emails... he recommended a 1/16" - 3/16" pack.... But really didn't have time to expand on his recommendation... Question: In what situation, on a non-race gasoline automotive-type engine, does a thicker piston ring, say 1/16" or 5/64" make more sense than the thinner rings? (is there a durability issue, blow by, heat transfer to cylinder etc??).... #TotalSealPistonRings

The reason for his recommendation is that you have a marine application, which put more load on the engine. The RPM's are typically lower in Marine applications, but loads are higher. As such, the thicker ring helps with heat transfer. It's always about the application.
