2:38 one of the most "I'm old" moments of my life came last years. You see, my cousin, a 14 year old girl, was throwing a 2000's themed party. You know, like it was a retro thing. It was sort of bizarre watching all those children dressed like my middle school buddies. My cousin was dressed very similarly to an ex girlfriend of mine. It was very bizarre. And it made me feel ancient

It’s a confusing term because it really doesn’t mean “rock that dads listen.” Like, there’s already a small number of Gen Z guys who are dads but I wouldn’t call what they’re listening to dad rock. It has to be dads of teenagers, because it’s really about having kids that want to poke your holy cows and dismissing your preferences as dated and cringe. Which is a teen thing.

Dad rock has nothing to do with a time frame. Dad rock was rock and roll that had zero edge to it. Whatever you think of certain bands... Bands like led zeppelin, black sabbath queen, even kiss were considered "heavy", "dangerous" for there respective time frames. Bruce springsteen, huey lewis and the news, phil collins, etc.; were never considered dangerous for there respective time frames. I'm not a huge fan of moving the goal posts. Led zeppelin is not dad rock. It's classic rock. Black sabbath birth heavy metal. Metallica was thrash. Until they lost their identity. Just because time moves on does not mean that musical genres get categorized differently by the next generation. Dad rock is safe very unedgy music during its respective time frame. If dads, of the time loved it, then as considered dad rock. Not too many dads were listening to KISS in the 70s. Because people actually believed they were called Knights in satan's service. Actual ground bREAking bands are not data rock just because time moves on. It has nothing to do with the generation. Has to do with how safe it was. Compared to its COMPETITION that were considered dangerous.

class of 2000 here. dad rock like Bozz Scaggs and Santana, Peter Frampton and Creedance and Clearwater. And stuff we liked was 70s and 80s punk. we were 11/12/13 listening to that stuff, while nirvana was new on the radio. :D then when grunge died out immediately into the mid 90s we were in highschool and we were knee deep in 80s thrash metal. while the kids were getting into RATM and Korn. It wasn't till i moved to a bigger city that i got exposed to more current metal and numetal in the late 90s. but emo was just starting to go hard in the little town i left. old school emo not that pansy stuff.

I never really got the whole Dad rock idea. I think being Gen X, where so much of our music was influenced by the 60s music of our parents, we didn't really walk around with an idea that someone like Jimmy Hendrix or Deep Purple were 'dad rock'. I tend to file this under labels like 'mid', where it just seems like a label people put on something as a rhetorical technique to make something seem lame
@vitormotta8832

I think that this scene from the 70s and 80s is still referred to as dad rock because it was more mature, more arranged and technical music, in times where artists had a lot of competition, 100% new genres and ideas emerged every year, and You needed to be really good to survive this competition. which is different from the original music from the 90s and 2000s onwards, which was more motivated and arranged around emotions such as youthful anger and revolt, apart from the flirtations with the modernity of pop music and radio genres. something similar happened when the punk rock movement emerged, where those people considered hard rock and heavy metal people to be a bunch of "boring old men", and came with their simplistic and nervous music

So I remember that up until I was about 10 years old, and started venturing out to find music that I, myself liked… my musical taste comprised of what my parents exposed me to. This was Boston, Journey, REO Speedwagon, Lynyrd Skynyrd, 38 Special, and so on. Now I see the same thing with my five year old… his favorite music is what my wife and I have exposed him to. That means in just a few years, that our music will be “The music my parents listened to”…

It took me forever to get into real music. For the longest time, I just listened to video game OSTs, anime openings, surface-level electro, and the Protomen. It took me until 2021 to really start listening to music, and I started with The Downward Spiral from 1994. To this day, I don't typically listen to anything released past 2009, and my favorite band is TOOL.

I think it was more common to listen to modern music back then. Now , thanks to the internet we have a choice, and that's why genzs listening to the stuff from 70-80s today is more common thing than youngers who listened to the music in 2000s. So now we're, like, less conservative and "dad rock" itself is a bit outdated

The term "Dad rock" first occured to me in the past three or five years. When I grew up and found my musical taste during the 90s and 2000s, this term was not used - at least not in northern Germany. We had the words "oldies" and "evergreens", which generally described music from the 60s and 70s or even earlier. When I have got my first computer with internet connection I vaulted into the depths of downloadable files and discovered hard rock and early heavy metal from the 70s. Today I do not listen to that as often as I did. I am currently rather listening to either modern music (from the past ten to twenty years) or obscure harcore and early extreme metal from the 80s. Yes, time flies, but I do not need a budget sampler CD from the supermarket to remind me of that. Thank you...

Is weid, it feels like in modern times music can be in two categories, the cheap viral hits that went super popular on tiktok but get old in few months right into oblivion, or music that never ages like Deftones. I'm sure that 20 years old music don't feel old in the same way that 80's felt aged in 2000's. Time flows different now, internet have the power to make things immortal or forgettable. 2000's still feels like a longer decade that isn't over yet.
