I work at Starbucks. Their 'contribution' to earth day is a joke. They were even selling reusable cheaply made plastic cups that say sustainable on them. Reusable is sustainable..but these are so flimsy they realistically are not meant for long time use or anything close to it.

I used to work at Starbucks too. I did see some shady stuff and some funny stuff happen. What got me upset was their "We are fast promoting sustainable recyclable tumblers, cups, etc..." This was years ago and recently I went online, all over social media people are selling their unused, some used and in good shape, and series sets for eight to twenty dollars. *Nobody is using or reusing their cups because of poor quality and other defects* At some point five years ago I went into a Starbucks and saw the manager and employee mix up usable/recyclable materials with organic materials. So gross and unethical! I took pics, told my friend I'd wait outside, and posted the pics online. I didn't buy anything. Sadly, my friend is obsessed with their iced coffee so I can't change her mind about not buying from them.

The kids in pre-AP science class in junior high had a thing where we would learn how to help cultivate swamp grass and then plant it in a park that was trying to help reclaim wetland. We got to apply our knowledge of pH, use cool testing equipment, and learn what people wear when navigating a marshy area. Yes, we did walk inside the muddy water to get to where the plants were and had to hose ourselves off afterwards. We ended up not doing the final planting because the weather didn't work out with the schedule, but I loved every second of it and it felt like an educational field trip. It also taught us about how important the wetlands are and how the ecosystem is withering away. Edit: btw for anyone curious, these grasses were hella finicky and it became glaringly obvious why these plants were dying out. They yellowed and got sick pretty easily (we had a picture chart to help identify what was wrong with them) and required a pretty specific pH range. They were not very adaptable to stress. This is what allowed them to be outcompeted by more generalist submerged plants or just die out altogether.

When it comes to things like pride month, black history month, and Asian/Pacific Islander history month, I feel like because those aren't just about public education/community awareness but in the case of pride month it's also largely about solidarity for members of the community, that doesn't work as well. But in this case of the whole Earth month thing, I think it might be a great idea to condense it so it doesn't become so diluted over a period of time that you can't give it attention consistently

Also, loads of companies, municipalities and people are paying tree trimmers to thin and limb up their rrees every year. They look like Dr Seuss drawings now. Makes me want to cry. I agree that the idea of Earth Month is commercially driven. That said, I do like the idea because I've seen people who didn't realize it was Earth Day and react with "oh well, I'll try not to miss it next year". Having a whole month doesn't necessarily mean you're asking someone to do something all month (although that would be great), but it does give folks a whole month to do *something*, which is better then having them do nothing.

I just wanted to share something I did today to connect to the Earth. I went on a walk where I explored some of the nature around me and picked up trash while I walked (you find a surprising amount when you’re looking for it). I even took my shoes off to feel the land beneath my feet. I had an amazing day and I will remember it for a long time. You don’t need to consume products to celebrate the Earth, you can find something that YOU feel will connect yourself to the planet because it helps you see what you are fighting for! So instead of looking to buy products this Earth day, try looking inward to find things that will be truly meaningful to you.
@thesavingsorceress

Wow, that's a ton of greenwashing to sift through! I wish brands (and more people) understood that sustainable living isn't something we do for the aesthetic and accolades but because we actually care about making a meaningful difference in the health of our planet. I was recently approached by one of those "we just plant a tree" brands on IG, and it's just so disappointing to see that they had no transparency info on the sustainability or ethicality of their product itself. Why would we lie to our followers to promote these products when they are hardly even doing the bare minimum?
@growingsage
@growingsage 2 жыл бұрын
Because actually doing something that could cause meaningful change is too hard. Companies have the resources to switch to sustainable products, but that would cost them money that could be made right now, so they dress it up and lie and make people think they're doing good, and some people (not all) make being environmentally conscious their defining personality trait but don't look critically at what they do. It doesn't help that society has this weird Black or white mentality going on, when many issues are interconnected.

I'm an environmental educator, so I teach kids environmental lessons year-round. Personally, I love earth month because 1) the weather is getting warmer so the kids are actually excited to go outside, and 2) they may have done another project in school that provides them reference, so I can actually build a lesson on a knowledge base, rather than just starting with nothing. (This has been multiplied by the covid restrictions, which has made them really not want to be outside or get dirty at all). Anyway, now I notice my kids are talking about seeds they've planted in class, a gardening project at their school, or making DIY reusables- it all helps me build my lessons off of it.

This video was SO good! I was laughing at the irony of some especially the last two.. shout out for throwing shade where shade is deserved!!! I think Earth month is a hard pro and con because if it gives awareness to an extra person who saw it more than once maybe it works. It definitely shouldn't be an excuse though for companies that can't step up for their actions.

Love this video. Keep speaking the truth because it's one of the things I value most about your channel. I had almost given up on sustainability/zero waste channels because most of them were about the things you needed to buy to become zero waste/sustainable 🤦‍♀️ but you were like stop buying all that sh*t, you don't need it. 😂💜

Shelby you have inspired and taught me so much! As an eco conscious person not sure what changes I could even make your videos have been SO helpful! I have made so many small changes but just the change in perspective and realizing that it only takes a small adjustment period to try new things has been a world of difference! Keep doing your beautiful work! 💚💚💚💚

So I think it’s better for earth month. Because of watching you I have changed a few things that I do around my place. I don’t shave either lol it’s been a year. But I do have a safety razor. I use my tap water through a Brita jug. I have given up paper towels, and have rags to use for clean up. It’s been a slow process but I do little by little.

Hi! Marketer here and here's my take - I have always looked at April a month to promote sustainability across the brands I work for but more than that I've looked at it as a chance to educate them (and customers) the difference between truly implementing green practices and just straight up greenwashing.

I wish more people would spread the message of just doing something better. I feel like a lot of influencers and celebrities that preach sustainability make it seem like you have to become 100% sustainable for anything you do to make a real difference. Thank you for spreading your message and giving people easy access to this knowledge! I hope more people find your content :)

I would love you to do a video on Palm oil! Also, if you haven’t done so already, would you do a video on sustainable clothing brand Christy Dawn? I’m interested in your take on their business model and what you think about “regenerative farming” that they tout. I’m awaiting my first purchase from them to arrive in the mail. I purchased from them because I love the look of their dresses and I wanted to inspect the quality from a sewist’s perspective. Even though their dresses are pricey, I don’t have an issue with it because I know from first hand experience all it takes to make an article of clothing. As a Gen X’er, I have seen the quality of ready to wear degrade and cheapen in my lifetime. I still have some pieces from the 80’s and 90’s that were constructed so much better than what I see in stores now. When I get my Christy Dawn dress, I’m going to try to replicate it from dress patterns that I have for myself, my sister and my niece 😁. I’m interested in your take on the company because in this day and age…they almost seem too good to be true! Am I missing something?

Love this and I often quote your phrase (and of course always credit you) - you cannot do all the good the earth needs, but the earth needs all the good you can do. Its sheer genius. I'm running an #EcoWinsWeek in May. I always forget about earth day because I care about living sustainably every day. But the event I'm running is intended to create a ripple effect and your quote is part of what inspired me.
