Our ducklings are afraid of everything. People, the outdoors, water. I might be able to win their love with peas. Ducks love peas.

About Gold Shaw Farm: Gold Shaw Farm is more of a farm-in-progress than an honest-to-goodness farm. Our dream is that someday we are able to transform our 150+ acre parcel of land into a regenerative and productive homestead and farm.

I remember one video you showed us your garden and you said the weeds were a bit of a problem. I recently read something that said it’s better to plow your farmland/garden during the night to avoid exposing underground seeds to sunlight. In an experiment one strip of land that was plowed during the day was covered 80% by weeds while the one that was plowed at night was only 2% weeds.

Weeds are awfully hard to get rid of, though. They'll totally come back after a simple plowing and not necessarily because of seeds. They just grow anew from their very hardy root systems, which can go very deep into the ground. So 2% growback sounds awfully low to me, which makes me doubt the whole story, honestly. Although it might well make some difference, at least at certain times of year. I doubt though, the difference is as big as stated.

My ducks are friendly, you do get back what you invest in them... but you do sometimes get an odd mix that seem more skitty for no particular reason.... if you ever have rescued wild mallards their behaviour is very much the same.. more natural instincts fight or flight. Peas are definitely my weapon, my ducks love them too.
@suet.r.4815
@suet.r.4815 4 жыл бұрын
Pasturing them, you want their instincts turned on, though. They instinctively know they are delicious and are wary... That keeps them alive. They learn to know where the treats come from and get used to you and even possible predators like the dog and cat (if they let them be). But I do like to be able to handle them. There is a balance that can be struck.

At 6:50 when you are holding the duckling, at first she is scared then calms down as you soothe her with petting motions. That’s how it was when I cared for some orphaned ducklings once. They go from being frightened of you to suddenly “oh wow this feels great” back to being terrified when you set them back down. It’s a confusing feeling for them. They don’t understand being pet or fed as even their own mothers don’t do that in the wild

Geese are incredibly curious, interactive and fearless. Ducklings, they are terrified of everything. As a group of 'babies' they need interactions with them to be fairly quietly to start and initially they do better being in a much smaller area where you can just sit with you as their initial mom figure. They just feel more secure. After a few days more space and feeling more protected they'll be good and will become exactly what you want which i understand to be more free range. They're just not terribly confident as babies as other birds tend to be. Oh...talk to them in a more normal less loud manner.

If the ducklings had Facebook pages they'd be filled with how much they don't like you, sunlight, other ducks... pretty much anything but each other! Poor little guys! And yet they're still adorable!

Have you thought about getting a Corgi dog they love to herd animals. I had a Scottish corgi once she loved to herd cows I didn't teacher her to do that it comes naturally for them. Would be a good companion for Toby the dog.

Hey, Morgan. My wife and I are fans of the channel. Not being a jerk, and no criticism, buuuuut. Decimate generally means to reduce by 10%. Only saying this because you, like me, seem to be the kinda guy who’d dig the feedback. Be well!

I had a duck that I hand raised named Pippin (currently my pic). Even though she lived the rest of her life outside with her duck friend, she never forgot her ducklinghood bond with humans. She'd always come say "hello."

I love ducks! Goofy little birds. If only people were so happy with a daily offering of peas! You can tell how happy your ducks are eating them when they shake their little bums or “wag their tails”. Mine do that when they’re happy about a snack, I give them their fresh pool water, they’re getting ready or done going poo or when they are upset with the chickens for stealing their peas! My ducklings didn’t love peas right away either...I thought. THEN, I filled their pea bowl full of water! Suddenly, the ducklings thought peas were magical! I think it was because they were semi soft and no longer frozen, as well as a fun game of bobbing for peas! It became a mini swim pool, filled with snacks, just for the babies and worthy of a tail wag! Also, i was going to ask you. I noticed your ducks didn’t eat the zucchini offering from your wife. Mine were like that as well. I learned I had to chop everything into smaller more manageable pieces. Then they couldn’t get enough. (Of course i can do this because I only have 30 different birds) It’s carried on to adulthood for my ducks and chickens. So bad that some of my OG chickens insist even bread be crumbled in tiny bits, eaten from my hand, or even...placed in their beak (like catholic Mass). 😂 I kid you not! My oldest, wisest, queen of the pecking order stands w her beak wide open, as I place micro bits in her mouth.. So she simply has to swallow and open her beak again!! The other 3 OGs patiently wait around her for their turn. However, they gently take the crumb from my finger tips. I don’t have to place it in their mouth! 😂 But, God forbid a crumb of bread fall to the ground anywhere near poo! I get the head tilt, chicken stare of disapproval as they determine if it’s still acceptable for the distinguished chickens consumption!! I love your channel! It’s like my life on a MUCH larger scale! I trust what you’ve taught me because you’ve learned it through trial and error and then you try again. That’s what makes you a true expert! That and you have patience and a heart of gold! Thank you so much for sharing your videos.
