Devaso was kind enough to send me their custom cooling back plate (shell) for the steam deck, which features an aluminum cooling plate and silicone conductive heat material. They also sent me the optional USB magnetic fan which when used together offers significant benefits to cooling.

I have both models of the cooler and use the small one with the jsaux cooling backplate. I choose the jsaux over this one because the jsaux had the vent still and a thermal pad to make contact with the heat source to pull heat to the cooler more efficiently. Works great

I have the tablet version of that kind of cooler and I bought the jsaux backplate, but after seeing the larger metal plate on this back plate, I may end up buying this one too to see which offers me better cooling.

Nice well made video! I'm just sad that the cooling thing hides the beautiful fake woodgrain. My question is: how necessary is it? You've had it a year, has the deck exploded within that time?
@NerdCrave
@NerdCrave Жыл бұрын
Like I said at the end of the video, mileage will vary based on your use case. For someone pushing the deck to its extreme limits, lowering the temperature several degrees could be very beneficial. If you buy just the shell and not the fan, it simply looks cool, has better grips, and has a kickstand if that matters to you, but is it NECESSARY? No.
@iiqulo
@iiqulo Жыл бұрын
@NerdCrave could be beneficial, but is that true? It makes sense, but at the same time, what would the lifespan difference be under heavy use? Would it save years? Maybe it is built well enough that it wouldn't die from the heat or out. I dunno. I'd want to know the expected longevity of the device. I don't like of buying special ads ons just to make the machine not die.
@NerdCrave
@NerdCrave Жыл бұрын
@@iiqulo I think it’s too early to tell, but if you look at the lifespan of most thermal paste (6-7 years) and you consistently keep the device cooler, you could theoretically add a year or two to the lifespan, but none of this is concrete. The way I use the deck, I probably don’t need this, I installed it more for the adventure and to make the video

there are 2 Devaso coolers, a small one intended for phones which you are using here and a larger one intended for tablets/other stuff which is the version/size meant to be used on this deck backplate, you arent getting all the cooling possible by using the tiny phone cooler version.

I remember there was something about a magnets affecting the fans rpm on a different steam deck accessory. Would the fan/magnet attachment on this product affect the fans rpm as well?
@NerdCrave
@NerdCrave Жыл бұрын
I wondered that as well, I believe that was with the dbrand killswitch case, and it only affected one of the two possible fans that could be installed. Personally I’ve been using this device for two weeks now and monitoring temperature closely, and it has only served to improve things. But my experience may not be everyone’s

It was jsaux initial release. They discovered internal fans were affected by the magnetic external fans. They changed it to mounting brackets instead.

It would be good to replace the stock thermal paste with Honeywell PTM7950 phase change material. Only liquid metal is more efficient since this substance.

I bought this same custom cover for my deck the other day, the gray part that contains the thermal paste, does the plastic have to be removed before installing the custom cover? It's a pasty material and my fear is that it will damage a component instead of cooling it. Edit: i didn't install this yet😂

It would likely be worse than stock, it would just take longer to get there because of the larger thermal mass.

This product does not seem well thought out. It moves the ventiation points to the opposite side of the deck from the heat-creating components, and reduces the intake holes by over 50%, and adds a heatsink that connects to an RF shield, which is connected to some heat generating components. The SOC is connected to a heatpipe, which is then connected to the mounting clip, wich is then connected to the RF shield, which is then connected to this case.

And yet it works fairly well to reduce temperatures
