Yes it's controversial, but I just wanted to point out that at the Olympics Jason scored over 14 men jumping quads. He finished in sixth place with no quads. Ilia was inconsistent at that time, Jason was not.
@zackwilson8701
@zackwilson8701 Жыл бұрын
Exactly. And in hindsight, knowing how Jason performed at the Olympics and how Ilia performed at World's, it's clear that Jason was the right choice for the Olympic team, not Ilia. If Ilia's team had wanted to position him for the Olympic team, then they needed to give him senior level international experience that year on the Grand Prix. That said, I'm so excited for Ilia going forward and I hope that his team can keep him healthy for the next Olympic cycle or two. He's a really hard worker and seems like a nice kid! What he's capable of is limitless.
@IsabellaVerandez
@IsabellaVerandez Жыл бұрын
@@zackwilson8701 Not arguing for or against whether the decision by USFS was correct (I think overall, Jason was the correct choice and USFSA was pretty transparent about body of work being very important, and Jason made the (eventually cancelled) GP Final that fall), but it was not Ilia's team who made the decision not to send him to the GP. USFSA assigned Ilia to the Junior Grand Prix circuit and not the Grand Prix circuit. You get JGP and GP assignments from your federation. And frankly, Ilia was still stabilizing his quads in the summer/fall of 2021, so he could make a much bigger splash on the JGP than as a newcomer on the GP circuit, which he did: he won two golds on the JGP and made a name for himself that fall already which would not have happened had he been assigned to the Grand Prix.
@zackwilson8701
@zackwilson8701 Жыл бұрын
@@IsabellaVerandez Agreed. Just out of curiosity, do you think Ilia could have handled competing in the JGP and the GP simultaneously? Should that US fed have encouraged Ilia to have done both? I tend to think that Ilia is still maturing as a skater and that he just needs time. It seems a bit premature to put all this pressure on him or score him as if he's the next Nathan, Yuzu, or even Shoma. I want him to take it slow and play the long game, and to not get hurt.
@IsabellaVerandez
@IsabellaVerandez Жыл бұрын
@Zack Wilson, I think skaters can only get assigned to either the JGP or the GP. They cannot get assigned to both. If they could have (and hypothetically assuming tech mins had been met for the GP), I’m sure the Italian Fed would have assigned poor Nikolaj Memola to the GP as well, given that they are making him compete at so many Senior Bs after his JGP assignments, lol. But a skater cannot have assignments at both in the same season. Ilia did have a senior B at Cup of Austria last year. With Ilia, I’m not surprised he’s being scored the way he is: on top of the ISU needing star power, the kid jumps a quad axel. I agree with you: I don’t think he should be scored that way, for sure. He’s crazy talented and very ambitious, obviously. I want his talent to be sustained in longevity more than anything else. At the same time, his parents could be pacing him just fine, it’s really hard to tell at this point. He’s obviously very competitive based on BV alone and in the current scoring system, but yeah, his scores are… very high, especially given that the only people to score a higher fs than what he posted at SkAm in the current scoring system are Nathan, Yuzuru, Shoma, Yuma, and Vincent, which is crazy. Anyway I just hope his team is pacing him properly. He’s very talented, and we want to see him skate competitively for many years.

Yes, I agree that Morisi shouldn't be allowed to compete for skating in pro-war Navka shows. It is honestly so disrespectful to the Ukrainian skaters to be letting him compete. Ivan Schmuratko, himself, (who is living through these horrors of war and has family still in Ukraine) has gone on record to say that Morisi should be banned for supporting the genocide of his people.

As Dave mentioned, nowadays income opportunities in figure skating are limited, even for Olympic gold medalists (P/C). Hubbell and Donohue already beat the top teams left in the field, they have nothing to prove. They are Olympic medalists, a World title is not going to raise their profile or earning power, especially when another season would require investing time, money and effort that they can put toward furthering other aspects of their lives.

Love Kazuki, but it's going to be very difficult for him to make the Worlds team. Even if Yuma is not healthy by JNats, which is a big if, Kazuki is up against Kao, Sota, and potentially Shun, whom we are going to see for the first time this season at Sheffield, assuming that Shoma is locked in for the spots. Like Kao, Shun could really be a surprise this GP circuit. We also haven't yet seen reigning Junior Worlds bronze medalist, Tatsuya Tsuboi who will be at Sheffield and Espoo. The Japanese Federation places a huge emphasis on Nationals placements, but based on what we're seeing this season already and the incredible depth of the Japanese men, I really think it's going to be tough for Kazuki to get the big international assignments in the latter part of this season. I really want the big assignments for him, though, so hoping for the best for him.

The Georgian pair team has actually relocated from Russia, according to their ISU profile, apparently they are now training in Germany with Alexander Köenig (Aliona Savchenko's former coach) but it does seem as though they were coming from Russia at that event since they were with Dudakov (they have Dani G. and Eteri listed as their choreographers so they must also train at Sambo 70). My heart absolutely broke for Karina, she looked like she was in SO MUCH pain throughout the performances and looked absolutely devastated after the FS. Really, what the hell was the Georgian Federation thinking by allowing her to compete in that condition? The pair are potential world medal contenders and making Karina perform while not recovered from a serious injury will only hurt their chances. It honestly feels like such an Eteri move to make a young girl skate while injured. Dudakov looked so cold towards her which I HATED. I'm glad at least Luka was comforting her and didn't put her down or anything.

@@quintupleaxel While that may be true, you also have to consider the power that their Federation has in the decision for them to compete. At the 2013 Worlds, the Chinese Federation was so desperate to get 3 spots for the Olympics in pairs that they forced Wenjing Sui to compete at those Worlds even though she had a serious leg injury and could hardly walk (she literally collapsed at the end of their FP). Or there's also the Korean Skating Union, whom make their skaters compete at NUMEROUS competitions throughout the season even if they're tired out by the end of it (ex: just this week, a Korean domestic competition was held to determine who will compete at 4CC within days of the GPF, which 4 of their female skaters are assigned to compete at). I think that the Georgian Federation wanted a spot at the GPF so bad that they sent Safina/Beruluva to skate at GP de France.
@quintupleaxel
@quintupleaxel Жыл бұрын
@@lyramusica4485 i don't think Georgian skating fed would have the power of the Chinese state though or care all that much by comparison really. I think they may have wanted to compete due to funding/prize money issues and so made a bad decision. Of course, who they were with in the kiss & cry likely played a part in that decision. I can't really imagine a man from a Pair team coached by Moskvina or Mozer willingly competing with a partner in that condition (i know many teams compete injured but she was medically incapable of a FS). The ISU should have medics at competitions who have the power to overrule athletes/coaches in this.

Okay, I agree that Yelim has what I would call finer technique then Loena, but Yelim didn't make "little mistakes". She fell twice in the fs. She didn't have a triple triple because of that. I'm confused by your comments. Where would you take points away from Loena and where would you add them for Yelim? I wanted to see where Yelim had the detail in her program that you feel that Loena doesn't, and I've decided that overall, I agree. But I think that because Loena was skating faster to more dramatic music, there doesn't seem to be as much opportunity to show small, graceful hand/arm/shoulder movements, etc.

I've been wondering about the use of "Indian summer" too. Here are other terms that I copied: The term is most often heard in the northeastern United States, but its usage extends throughout English- speaking countries. It dates back at least to 1778, but its origin is not certain; the most probable suggestions relate it to the way that the American Indians availed themselves of this extra opportunity to increase their winter stores. The comparable period in Europe is termed the Old Wives' summer, and, poetically, may be referred to as halcyon days. In England, dependent upon dates of occurrence, such a period may be called St. Martin's summer, St. Luke's summer, and formerly All-hallown summer.

I’ve always wondered about the ice conditions in terms of the safety of the skaters. There were more unexpected weird falls than usual at this event and I know it’s been an on going situations at the Olympics when figure skaters share the same ice as the short track skaters who prefer the opposite condition from figure skating. It’s just baffling (but not surprising) to me that rather than being concerned about the safeties of the athletes the athletes are just told to suck it up…

@SunflowerCat333 Жыл бұрын
Exactly! You wouldn’t see an NFL football field with a bunch of holes in it! Proper ice quality is critical to the performance and safety of these athletes. In particular, the temperature of proper figure skating ice is slightly warmer so ice is a little softer than hockey ice. Hockey ice is colder and harder.

Take away the quads and Jason Brown is the best skater on the planet. He's still that good.
@aspen327
@aspen327 Жыл бұрын
Yes, take away quad Jason might be the best But do we want to slow down the process of a sport. Ten years ago Jason might had been Olympic champion. I still think Nathan would be up there with him. He to much of a competitive person. He just humble about it. He would have work on his artistic , flexible ability etc. don’t get me wrong. Jason is a beautiful skater but sometimes I feel like Nathan jumps are not appreciated. He makes it look so easy , we forget how difficult the quad jumps can be. Johnny Weir said it best. The skater that can combine jumps and artistic sides should be the winner. Jason would have beaten Nathan if he could at least do two quads in each program.
@keithh2028
@keithh2028 Жыл бұрын
@@aspen327 I guess that's the point. If the judging system were evenly distributed between the technical side and the artistic side, maybe Jason would've had a chance to win more, but that isn't how the scoring system current leans towards. It rewards technical ability far more than the artistic side. It isn't balanced unfortunately.

I do notice the lack of Russian ladies but not in a bad way. IMO I feel all these ladies who were doing great things but were being overshadowed by the quad squad are finally getting the medals they deserve The pairs is where I miss Russia and China. I think you guys are spot-on in your assessment of Valieva, and I think she's just as enigmatic to the Russian public. We know who Trusova and Shcherbakova are. They have obvious personalities, they do interviews, they go on shows, etc. Kamila, not so much. Since Beijing, she's been Russia's golden girl at home, the victim of a Western conspiracy, a fragile innocent poster girl for Russian nationalism (much easier to support than a war; there's some brilliant political maneuvering happening here), etc. The media coverage of her--interviews, articles, the Channel One specials--don't tell us who she is, and it kind of doesn't matter. She's forever going to be defined by that whole mess. I also get the sense that she doesn't get along too well with the other Khrustalnii girls. We know that Anna and Dasha are friends. Aliona was in their Team_tutberhouse TikToks last year...so were Sofya Akatyeva, Maiia Khromykh, Adeliia Petrosian once...Kamila wasn't, though. Then she did an interview with Navka at the VKFest over the summer and one of the audience members asked if she was close with Anna, Sasha, etc. Kamila goes, "I'd rather not answer that question." pause. "But no, I'm not."

Could ice condition affect edges in particular? People normally more used to riding stably on a deep edge are maybe not be able to safely hold it in watery surfaces? I've always wondered whether GP France disproportionately affects those kinds of skaters (ones that really use the ice for momentum as opposed to skaters who jump on ice same as they would on land) and edge jumps. Valieva strikes me as very ambitious person. Yes, she is talented but I think figure skating was imposed upon her. I observers the issues with the anxiety is the impediment to showing her personality and emotions on ice. Probably she is a afraid of being vulnerable. I certainly have compassion for her, the adults should be the ones punished. After the doping scandal she is caught in this claustrophobic environment, and I believe she is smart enough to know that she does not have a way out. NO one outside the Russian sphere would take her after the events of February. Deep down, even with all the flattering she gets from the Russian press and society at large, she hates it. But tries to make the best out of it. Most of the children/teenagers that excel in a certain field hate it, I'm speaking from my own experience. I hated the praises, the pressure, even people cheering for me.

Wonderful, insightful and entertaining as ever. Thank you again. I would say in ice dance so far this season Fear & Gibson have the second highest RD and FD scores - surprisingly - for sure, but they've scored higher than Chock and Bates and Guinard and Fabbri. I will bet you they believe they can win Europeans and medal at World's (some may think that unfair but...). And Loena believes she can contend for the Gold with Kaori - however beautiful all the Korean women are artistically. I have one criticism of Loena and that is the underpart of her outfit for the SP. There really needs to be more coverage (and that's coming from a gay man).

I don't think Valieva currently stacks up very well with Kaori or Loena. Certainly not with Rika, if Rika regains her full technical content. Valieva was so over-scored previously, her scores would have to come down without the quads and triple axels. PCS so far this season have topped out in the 8s. I think the same would be true for Valieva.

Jason can do well at this upcoming Nationals and actually Worlds this year because Nathan and Yuzuru retired. He is one of the best with his artistry and will get a lot of PCS scores. However, he would not have a chance to get a medal at the next Olympics and would be taking a spot of someone else that has potential. This year doesn't seem like it would be a problem as no other man besides Ilia has stepped up and Camden is struggling and Vincent is taking a break. Jason should win a medal this upcoming Nationals. We are ok with it for Jason to compete this season as it's early in the quad with no one else seems to have potential. However, we hope he doesn't continue being mediocre at Worlds and Olympics and no real shot at a medal. Yes, he would have a decent shot at a World medal this year with lots of retirements or skaters taking a break; however, we would not back him to move forward to the next Olympics unless he gets at least one quad because even with one quad, it would be hard for him to win a medal. He sometimes struggles with his triple axels too. We don't seem to have depth in almost all of the categories/events except ice dancing and we are not as strong as we were there too. Hope it gets better before the 2026 Olympics or Jason will be a better team member than the other American men besides Ilia, who should improve his PCS and GOE by then.
