Yeah the debate about PR and FPTP tends to follow a trend. Those in power tend to go cold on the suggestion of electoral reform, while those out of government tend to get very vocal about it. The Tories had 14 years to make those reforms but somehow didn’t.

Agree but IMO the UK has in effect voted for the status quo by voting Labour. If Labour goes on to do the same as the Tories then they deserve the same fate as the Tories come the next GE.

@@alangardner8596 based on our system, it’s a big win, but it’s more a repudiation of the Tories, however Labour now have a majority so big they can pass whatever they want, so it’ll be interesting to see if they can stick together and pass things that actually help the NHS, single mothers, the poor working class, etc. Keir Starmer is a centre right politician so I don’t see it happening

If the conservatives stood down then the votes would likely be split between Lib Dem and Reform. Reform took all the votes they were ever going to take from the Tories. No Tory candidate doesn't automatically mean the electorate will vote Reform, people who vote Tory but want to punish the party don't necessarily align with Reform's policies.

It seems insane to me that the conflict in a tiny country in a different continent where the UK has no troops and the outcome has no direct effect (on the UK) is even an electoral issue at all, let alone a notable one.

Hopefully this will be a wake-up call to the entire political class. Blair brought the Islamists in for easy votes but like a man who plants bindweed for the pretty flowers, it has run out of control. This is a threat to democracy itself.

Under PR we would now have a Labour, Lib Dem and Green coalition with the greens having disproportionate negotiating power as kingmakers and getting their policies in - that very few people voted for - as part of the negotiations. Would you prefer that?

@@JustMeHere359 Under PR, generally you need to form a coalition which can have a governing majority. The single largest party (Labour) normally gets to form that coalition. Labour is not going to go into coalition with the conservatives or reform - it would do a deal with the Lib Dems and would also need the greens to get a majority looking at the vote share. Knowing that Labour need them to get a governing majority the Greens would bargain hard even though they had few votes - as the DUP did when Teresa May needed them. This is what happens in other countries that have PR. So yes, reform would have more seats under PR but in this election the actual government would be significantly more left wing than the Labour Party which has just won.

It is a landslide. That 40% said we don't care. They don't care about immigration or anything at all. So that is a landslide. People who care about immigration actually came to vote.
