This week the cheapest Porsche 911 Carrera Coupe in the USA with under 100K miles and a clean title gets a much needed oil change. The process to change the oil is the same for both the 996 and 997 generation of the 911. Doing this yourself can save you hundreds of dollars.
There is also trouble in paradise as the Porsche 996 has a coolant issue pop up. I was able to get footage of the cause of the issue and talk about the fix.
For the oil change tools that you will need:
1. Breaker Bar
2. Gloves
3. Socket Wrench
4. 10mm Socket
5. Torque Wrench
6. 10 Quarts of Synthetic Oil (I used Mobil1 5w-50)
7. 10 quart or greater oil drain pan
8. New oil filter
9. Crush washer
10. A utility knife or some type of cutting tool
11. Oil filter wrench (Part number for one option is 000-721-920-40)
12. 8mm hex socket
Torque settings:
Oil drain plug: 37 ft.-lb. / 50 Nm
Oil filter canister: 19 ft.-lb. / 25 Nm

I totaly agree about doing your own maintenance, I have a C2 3,4L manual 1998, and I am using Mobil 5w 50, here in France the shops are also asking crazy prices for regular maintenance jobs. I also think looking after the car personally is part of the pleasure of owning a 911 and interesting. These cars are quite easy to work on, and well documented. I also think that sharing a passion with your kids, is special. By the way my 996 has 169000kms, 105000 miles, so very similar. Look forward to following your videos.

When I saw this I was thinking you were going to say you needed to do a coolant line job. I'm glad it turned out to just be the cap.

Yes, I thought the worst when I saw the puddle as well. I’ll probably end up replacing the expansion tank as well fairly soon just to make sure that doesn’t crack. Thanks for watching and sharing your thoughts.

Glad you enjoyed the video. Sometimes things are great in your head and they don’t quite translate to the screen, so glad to hear it was informative. Also thanks about the adoption, but I think we are the ones blessed with the little one. God bless you as well. Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment.

My 987 had been running mobil 1 0w-40 by previous owner. I did an oil analysis when I bought the car last year. Everything looked perfect. I put 5w-40 Nulon synthetic when I changed it. I’ll do another change and oil analysis soon. Will be interested to see if anything changed. I’m also pretty sure I drive the car a lot harder than previous owner.

I use Mobil 1 0w40 In AZ I change the oil every 6 months or 3000 miles. My IMS has not been replaced so I want to keep an eye on it.
@OurRideLife

Thanks I used 0w40 on my Boxster. Was going back and forth between 5w-50 and 0w-40. Also, good to point out about the more frequent oil changes. I forgot to mention that, but I never like going over 5,000 miles or 6 months between oil changes depending on how often you drive. Thanks for watching and sharing your experience.

Our Ride Life I’ve done 6000km in a year. That’s about time for a change.
@OurRideLife

That’s about 3,700 miles, so low mileage. This year with the sty at home orders and working from home, I’ll probably be closer to that. Most years I put on about 8K miles in a year.

I change the oil on my 1999 and it is no big deal. It's actually easy, but you need a large drain pan. I have the 2 quart deep sump from LN Engineering, so it holds 11.5 quarts. My car has the original engine with 92k miles. It has always used 10W50 Mobil 1 until the last change when I added Joe Gibbs XP9 10W40 prior to tracking it. It has lived its life in SC and has a lot of track miles. The purists on Rennlist recommend Joe Gibbs Driven DT40 (5W40). Edit:. I think I used Zerex G-40 antifreeze last time. The purists are okay with using this. It is half the price of the Porsche stuff.

I’ve heard good things about the Joe Gibbbs oil. Also, thanks for the antifreeze info. Thanks for watching and sharing your experience.

@@OurRideLife I would lean towards using a heavier weight oil, at least a 5W. The 0W oils have the viscosity of water. The only reason to use 0W is to reduce friction (drag) for higher gas milage. I would rather sacrifice a tiny bit of milage for a thicker oil between the rod bearings and rod journals.

Probably smart. Was thinking of replacing a few more things with the cooling system myself just as a precaution.

Most likely your coolant expansion tank. Just had mine done last week same leak location.

Our Ride Life Maybe you’ll luck out and it’s only the cap! My 02 only has 40k on odometer and it needed a $750 expansion tank replacement. Was going todo it myself but was scared off by the burping process.

Yep, was looking at the expansion tank as well. Going to try the cap first and then the tank would be next.
