In this video we show how to install a 6L90 torque converter in the 6L80 transmission in my 2014 Silverado.
The 6L90 torque converter was used in some 5th gen ZL1 Camaros and some CTS-Vs.
I made this swap because of the well documented issues with the 6L80 torque converters failing, and damaging the transmission by clogging the pump with debris.
We did locate the following article which indicates that the 6L90 torque converters may be prone to the same issue but we will see how this one holds up over time.
www.sonnax.com...
The 6L80 transmission is used across the lineup of GM vehicles including but not limited to: Chevy
SS, Silverado, Tahoe, Suburban, Yukon, Sierra, and more.
NOTE: you will need to add additional fluid once the torque converter is installed.

Great video and information. My TC failed at 82K miles and shredded my transmission. Fortunately for me my 2014 was still under its 100k mile powertrain warranty so I had it repaired for free though it took two and a half weeks. My transmission was so trashed I actually got a new one and not a reman. I also got the upgraded TC installed as well at no cost to me.

im at 113K miles on my 2016 Sierra and i think my TC and tans are toast, I was able to get a trans off a 2018 silverado LT with 5K miles on it (same 6L80 trans). The truck was totaled but trans still good. planning on doing the swap in a week. my questions are: do you think any programming/relearn is required for the whole trans swap? secondly, while its down should i upgrade the torque converter or just use the OEM?

@@utrocker7 I would definitely upgrade the TC. That's what caused my trans to fail. As for the programming, my guess is it will need to be reprogrammed or at least a relearn for sure.

I've been a professional mechanic for over 40 years. I would never replace a torque converter without first replacing the torque converter seal. The seal has got over 100k mikes on it. It's going be running on a new surface. It is 10 times more work to replace it after it's all put back together.

Confirmed! My TCC failed with 108k on the clock in my '17. Went with a reman trans. It is my belief that the AFM operation makes the TCC work much harder and thus reduces its already short life.

These models gm trucks have these common problem of torque converter getting shot. They have a design flaw for the torque converter. Our 2018 chevy silverado torque converter went out at 120k miles. We chose to rebuilt it. The transmission specialist shop replaced it with an aftermarket redesigned torque convertor and also installed a separate cooler just for the transmission to extend the life of the tranny because these gm models also have these problem of overheating tranny fluid. Hopefully this fixes the problem. Listen to Scotty Kilmer and get a Toyota. Our 2006 Toyota camry has 370k miles with the original engine and tranny.

@yogisingh2504
@yogisingh2504 3 жыл бұрын
The common problem with these transmission is the failure of the main pressure regulator valve in the pump, which drops the line pressure on these unit. In the early model the output shaft had a design where it also cleaned the fluids by catching debris with centrifugal force as you drove the vehicle around. Early unit use to go up to 200k miles with very little service. Then gm change the design of the out put shaft and more metal shaving (practical's) from the planetary sets started to float around in the fluid. So it is paramount to change the fluid on these units every 25 to 30k miles. Changing fluids on these units will help prolong the life of these tranny. Please do a complete transmission fluid service as you are installing a brand new Converter. Hope this helps and most likely you have done the oil change on it.

@The Sundae Drive, thank you very much for this & your other instructional videos, very helpful!! I have a 6L80 transmission in my 2010 Chevy Avalanche 5.3L, but my TC hasn't failed yet (~130K). Questions: 1) Do you know how much of a different a billet makes - and is your answer based on what you're driving/towing, or overall longevity? 2) RockAuto suggests for me: TC Remfg. B85JMBX (Standard), HDB85JMBX (Heavy-Duty Billet), or B85JMBXF (Flanged Hub). I was considering one of those, but after referring to your 6L80/6L90 article, sounds like I probably shouldn't consider those for replacements? 3) I saw another guy suggests getting a L6-80 (made for Corvette C5) - did you ever look into that? My 2015 is doing it, just turned 50k. What makes no sense to me is that I purposely had the truck tuned by Diablew to prevent (delay) any future transmission issues. Didn’t really start doing it until after I tuned it and driving it on the interstate more instead of short back road trips. I’m thinking of doing a flush/filter since it’s probably never had one done. But I have a feeling I’m going to be doing a converter here soon. 🤨 tempted to go ahead and fork over the money to do a proper DOD delete with a small cam and a 6l90 converter since I like the stock stall for any future towing needs/keeping torque down low in the power band for my larger all terrain tires. Also thinking of putting an aux cooler and a deeper pan on it to help save the trans.

I bought my 11 Sierra LC9 from an elderly local Guy who's a life long GM buyer. He babied the truck as youd expect with all services at the dealership I bought her from. Making the records as easy as it gets for me. I'm a builder so I'm hard on the truck but that's why we buy trucks right? We have the heaviest available package for the 03' year in the 2500hd 6.0 for the severe pulls/loads and she's bulletproof. However!! 3 years ago I pulled out 6'-10' dump trailer with my half ton! Just to get 3 yards of 3/4" gravel for my own house needed for a walk way. Told the guy out in the local yard what I wanted he said no problem so I figure great I'm heading in to pay as he knew his shit and how to properly load......I come out of the office and he says you're all set man the 3yrads of gravels loaded I said thanks and see you around.... Fckn guy didn't know that the new Bobcat wasn't equipped with the same half yard bucket oh no it had a yard bucket so his SIX FULL BUCKETS almost filled our dump trailer so I'm looking at it like WTF!?? I double checked that's only 3 yards man you're sure and he replied ya man I've been doing this almost as long as youve been alive, what's wrong....so I go back to me truck fire her up and put it in 4wd full on as both axles on the dump were showing a load to put it mildly. The 11' HALF TON! in tow haul got that load moving very easy, but I have no electric brake control in the truck as we have a real full on work horse for that lol and stopping that load was very hard. Knowing something is way off I pulled it to the shop and hooked the work truck to her. It was 6 yards at 3000 pounds plus the dump about 2000 pounds the truck pulled up some long steady grades to get to the shop. So that is legitimately 20,000 pounds my HALF TON was forced to pull and to stop! Honestly she impressed me so much easily pulling the load I was double guessing that old timer way overloaded it, but trying to stop that load took every skill I had so I knew it was over. At the shop I rolled the mesh cover up and inspected the load myself closely this time. I was extremely pissed off as one clear look even a city boy could tell that's way more than 3 fckn yards man. Had no choice but to pull her to the shop once I left. Between being very disappointed with myself for trusting the old timer down there so much as it is ultimately my responsibility for what I pull with my truck, yet at the same time I, along with all the guys there were absolutely blown away the half ton Sierra pulled that 20,000 plus pound load so easily. They all witnessed me completely stop on the slight grade so a couple trucks could move outta my way, then have to get all that weight rolling again and it did make all 8 cylinders work but she had power to spare! The 2500hd equipped with the heaviest possible setup/package even offered by GM actually had abit harder time getting the load moving even with 4.11 ring&pinion....but the random dumps brakes made all the difference so I decided to pull her all the way home a half hr drive purely uphill by taking all the back roads going slow an easy allowing anyone behind me to pass. That load was thousands of pounds above even the HD work truck built for it capacity, but the way that 11' LC9 with the 6L80 and 3.52 (I can't remember exact ratio but close enough) ring& pinion pulled that load making it so effortlessly even the Ford guys with diesel were the first to say that's beyond impressive. Absolutely STUPID! A combination of mistakes/stupidity lead to that. I am telling the truth entirely and ya it's embarrassing as it gets to admit that even tho I know better I STILL pulled off that drop dead stupid move, yet the truck took it. That gravel was moist as hell but doesn't hold water like sand, still the 3000 pounds per yard is a conservative figure, and there was a full 6 yards in that 1ton dump (rated to haul 4 tons itself) That's pushing as hard as a guy can to break his truck or have problems of some sort, yet our trucks stepped up, took that ass whippin and just carried on. I definitely got LUCKY and would never allow it to happen again, but the fact remains that the 2011 Sierra 1500 LC9-6L80 3.52 R&P pulled over 20,000LBs off the fckn hitch (rated 10,000LBs max) mostly uphill. Well done GM👍🇺🇸👍🇺🇸🤯

@@TheSundaeDrive it's crazy what we do at times, but the fact we know better in the first place is the funny part in the end. If we damage our trucks being that stupid then we man up, complain as we're lowering the tranny down and out but after a week or 2 we laugh. The times we get LUCKY we also know enough that it's nothing to brag about lol I love the 78' GM trucks as an example, but a 78 half ton had no chance of pulling that 20,000lb trailer man let's face it a dam 3/4 ton of the era would be extremely sketchy. But our new trucks we curse out when say a tank pressure sensor goes bad dropping that 5volt circuit putting the truck in limp mode, the truck screaming at us turn off engine immediately as there's no oil pressure! But we know there is. So we gotta hook up the volt meter to the battery ground, other terminal to the grey wire on the MAP sensor watching the meter as we unplug 1 sensor at a time until the 5 volts comes back......but at the end of the day they really have come incredibly far. Fckn 1500 now is equal if not stronger than the old 3/4's an there on up I guess it's the beauty of such a competitive market 👍🇺🇸

In the last 2 weeks, my 2014 GMC Sierra sle (131k miles) with the 5.3L started to shift in and out a bit randomly, also occasionally makes a rumble strip feeling at highway speeds when going up hills with just a bit of throttle applied. I just had the dealership do a transmission flush and it is better but not fixed. Dealership said it could just be the torque converter but recommended a full transmission replacement anyways at $5,200 and change. I’m considering my options. I’m handy and have tools, but more carpenter than mechanic. Do I try to save the $1,000 and drop the transmission and replace torque converter to see if it works before spending $5,200 on a replacement?
@TheSundaeDrive
@TheSundaeDrive 3 жыл бұрын
If the flush made it better in my opinion there is a good chance the transmission is ok and the torque converter may be starting to disintegrate and clog the lines. To me it's worth a shot because the torque converter will need to be replaced regardless. Is the transmission slipping at all? The sooner you replace it, the better chance you have of saving it if that is the issue. That is just my opinion tho as it is hard to know for sure without opening it up
@Fishermanjuice22
@Fishermanjuice22 3 жыл бұрын
I haven’t noticed it slipping at all. How difficult is it to replace? Easier to pull the tranny out to get at it or the motor? I think the dealer was thinking that if replacing the torque converter, may as well switch the tranny too since it would be out.

I have a 2014 V6 silverado, is the converter also failing? I installed a drain plug in the tranny and dump it twice a year minimum

Sounds about right. Were you able to catch it in time to save the transmission?

@@TheSundaeDrive Yes but rebuilt it anyway because it was out. All Raybestos stage 1 clutches, updated pistons, Sonax zip kit and a Circle D twin disk truck converter. It is working flawlessly. I have had it back in for about 2 weeks so it is still learning. It has had a little tcm tuning done to eliminate the lockup in gears 1-3 and eliminated the programmed in tcc slip. When it came apart there was some noticeable but not bad wear on the 2,6 clutches and in the 1,2,3,4 and 2,5,R clutches each had one clutch plate that had a small spot of material that flaked off. The L,R clutches looked basically new still.

Hey guys, I’m new here. I have a 2005 Chevy 2500HD and am swapping transmissions on it now. I have a 4L80E transmission and didn’t know if I could put this on the 4L80 or what I could do to make it better?

Does the transmission retain the Lock Up after swapping the Torque converter? The clutch-like feeling that engages after 40mph to be able to drive at low RPMs without the Converter Slipping

Is it abnormal for a break In Period to occur after a transmission rebuild and an upgraded torque converter? I am having shudder and rough shifts that has gotten better, but still occurs 200 miles after the new tc.
