"This is a scale model of war!" That growl is TERRIFYING.

Arguably my favourite line in this is "You're not superior to people who were cruel to you, you're just a whole bunch of new cruel people. A whole bunch of new cruel people, being cruel to people, who will end up being cruel to you!" I don't know why but repetition, man, it works

Reminds me of this quote from M.A.S.H. Hawkeye: War isn’t Hell. War is war, and Hell is Hell. And of the two, war is a lot worse. Father Mulcahy: How do you figure that, Hawkeye? Hawkeye: Easy, Father. Tell me, who goes to Hell? Father Mulcahy: Sinners, I believe. Hawkeye: Exactly. There are no innocent bystanders in Hell. War is chock full of them - little kids, cripples, old ladies. In fact, except for some of the brass, almost everybody involved is an innocent bystander.

Why the hell didn't Capaldi win an Emmy for this scene? This was one of the best scenes in Doctor Who history, and Capaldi was awesome here.

"We'll win" Funny thing about winning is that YOU have to win every single time, THEY have to win just once.

"BECAUSE IT'S NOT A GAME KATE!" The Doctor really has a way of making someone feel like a child in a moment

"I let Clara Oswald get inside my head. Trust me, she doesn't leave." This line is really sad when you realize how the Doctor and Clara actually parted ways, with the Doctor losing his memories of Clara. She left his head.

Applicable to war, to political disagreement, to personal relationships, to everything. Whoever wrote this scene is a genius.

The fact neither Peter nor Jenna received any major awards for their work in this episode - and not to mention Heaven Sent and Hell Bent - was unforgivable.

Line that got me: "...Untill everyone does what they were always going to have to do from the very beginning; Sit down and talk..." Fact is all wars end with diplomacy, and equally they could all be averted through it. Love this speech to pieces.

i love how kate is the one who closes the box first. she has read all the doctors file and heard all the stories. she understand the doctor just as well as any companions.

I love his facial expression when she says "we've been treated like cattle" "Eh, so what." "we've been left to fend for ourselves." "ehh so has everyone."

You know what I love about Capaldi? You can see EVERY Doctor in him. Even here for example, I see them all even War Doctor. They're all there, it makes Doctor Who feel realer somehow when you see them all in one, because that's the magic of the show. They all are there, just with a different face on the outside

Honestly, I don’t think I could imagine any of the other doctors giving this speech. He does it so perfectly. It sends chills down my spin and brings tears to my eyes every damn time.

I like The Doctor's little smile right before Zygella says the boxes are empty. He knows she knows, and he knows she's starting to think like him; that he's finally persuaded her that this is not the way to protect her people.

Only the Doctor could stop a catastrophic war with nothing more than a speech and a couple of boxes.

Holy shit, this man can act.

The sheer fact that The Doctor just gave them empty boxes speaks so much to his character and the power of this sole speech and everything that makes The Doctor The Doctor. I absolutely love it

"There was another box; I was gonna press another button." The calm, cold, dispassionate manner he delivers that line gets me every time.

I love the choice in this scene to take away the music completely, and boy am I a sucker for great speeches backed up by awesome music, but this is so special, so raw, so powerful and very very well acted.

No matter how many times I watch this I will never see Bonnie (I think her name is) as Clara it’s weird Jenna’s acting is so phenomenal that I see Clara and the zygon as two different people. Like I honestly forget that they are played by the same person.

No music. No snappy cuts or fancy editing. No cg or intriguing set design. Nothing to distract you from what it wants. Just 10 minutes of pure and unburdened acting. Beautiful.

The most scariest thing about this entire speech is that there is no music. Usually in speeches in movies are made grand through music. However here despite no music it was so impactful that i actually want to cry. My throat is literally burning from the emotional pent up.

He just explained every war in the history of our species. He, who has experienced war, all of the destruction and suffering, he knows it all, he has seen it all and he definitely doesn't want to see it again. It is shocking what a time traveler with many lives experiences. This show is a masterpiece depicting the pain of a lonely man.

6:35 when the Doctor goes into Vietnam flashbacks about the time war. It's one of the moments you can actually feel for the doctor

"How much blood will spill until everybody does what they will always gonna have to do from the very beginning SIT DOWN AND TALK" I felt that

"Do you know what 'thinking' is? It's just a fancy word for 'changing your mind'." This whole speech is fantastic, and the part about sitting down and talking gives me goosebumps every time, but the above line just sums it all up so perfectly, and can be applied to so many situations in life. The entire scene is TV history, but those two sentences are truly words to live by.

"Trust me. She never leaves." Harsher in hindsight.

One of the issues I had, as a fan of the first 26 seasons, is that the newer seasons forgot about how interesting the Doctor could be outside of traveling in time and knowing all this knowledge. Season 9, however, works on so many levels because it gets to the heart of the Doctor. This scene is possibly one of the best scenes in the whole of the show's history because it shows the Doctor's pain, anguish, and in the face of it all, the ability to continue. Like 'Heaven Sent,' it reveals that no matter what happens to him, the Doctor's strength is his incredible reslience. And notice that while most shows would end this with an action scene, all we have is a few powerful performances, and it works brilliantly. This is Doctor Who at its finest.

"you're all the same you screaming kids" I love that part

That whole scene is brilliant. The writing is terrific. Such an eloquent monologue about war. And Capaldi's acting is a true master class. When The Doctor says "you think this is a war... I've fought in a bigger war..." You can see the pain in Capaldi's voice and you imagine all the pain and death that the Doctor witnessed during the Time War. WOW.

Best anti war speech ever.*period* I don't care that this was in a fictional setting, because this applies to real world.

"the boxes are empty we can't forget that" "no, well you said that the last 15 times" Are we all brushing over the fact he messed up 15 times in his speech and he wiped all their memories?

The way his voice breaks as he says "You just want cruelty to beget cruelty" is just so good

this scene encompasses everything about the doctor: he is tired of war but will fight to death to save people. his wraith is endless but his mercy is without end. he sees that war is stupidly pointless and pointlessly stupid. he is the ultimate solider and the ultimate pacifist. for me, this is not only peter capaldi's best performance as the doctor but the best scene in all of DW.

"I mean, you call this a war, this funny little thing? THIS is not a war! I FOUGHT IN A BIGGER WAR THAN YOU WILL EVER KNOW!!! I DID WORSE THINGS THAT YOU COULDN'T EVEN IMAGINE AND WHEN I CLOSE MY EYES...I HEAR MORE SCREAMS THAN ANYONE COULD EVER BE ABLE TO COUNT!!! And you know what to do with all that pain? Should I tell you where you put it? You hold it tight! Till it burns your hands! And you say this : ...NO ONE ELSE. WILL EVER. HAVE TO LIVE LIKE THIS; NO ONE ELSE WILL HAVE TO FEEL THIS PAIN! NOT ON MY WATCH!"

The Doctor sounds so desperately relieved and grateful when Kate closes her box 7:20

This is my favourite speech of all time. Not of fiction, or television. Of straight up all time. Unlike the recent 13th, you can hear and feel all 12 Doctors riding on Capaldi's back. From 1st to War, and 9th to 11th. And also his own little touch. This build up. These immense centuries that he's lived through. The number of wars he's seen. The number of battles he's fought. The number of people he's lost. The amount he knows. He's been to the beginning of the universe and back again. He's seen everything twice. And at this moment, he's trying to let children learn. He's trying to teach them. Guide them away from futile conflict. The conflict that he is familiar with. The conflict he KNOWS. Better than anyone else. And better yet, he knows himself. And he doesn't want anyone to go through what he has gone through. Capaldi was literally born for the Doctor.

I feel like this speech is particularly relevant right now. My heart goes a out to the many civilians dying in the current war.

What I love about this scene is how the Doctor does everything he can to stop war from happening. The boxes, the memory wipe, the speech, all because he has lived it. He has lived with the guilt of being the man who caused the genocide of his people, and even before he decided that, the things he did as the War Doctor has him always believing that what he did will end soon: Until he did it for too long. Before he realised it, every day of 'The end justified the means' became years of it and when he finally looked in the mirror, he was an old man. No longer the young incarnation that he saw reflected in his eyes when he first entered the fray. And when he stared through that reflection's eyes, he could see every single atrocity that the monster commited, every single life that it took for a better tomorrow, for the continuation of his people. And he declared there and then: No More After he 'wiped' out his race. He lived with the guilt for more than four hundred years. Always looking back at what he thought was the right thing at that time, always thinking in the back of his mind that there had to have been a better idea but never coming up with any solutions. The guilt and the pain has torn him apart many times and vowed to never allow such a thing to happen again and never let someone hold such pain. And so, in the face of war, he would rather be the pacifist than the warmonger if it meant no one else will die meaningless.

The Doctor doesn't win battles with force, or weapons. He's mostly a logician who wins or accomplishes his victories with logic. He doesn't have a superpower or a weapon, he has logic and intelligence, and he can win many battles with words. He's a great logician and usually is able to influence people just with logic, almost like a magician...

The transitions from Doctor to Doctor are what have made the revival era who so engaging. Eccleston is moments from the Time War as he arrives, still convinced he killed them all. Over one series he learns to accept people in his life again and even falls for Rose. They sacrifice themselves to save each other and the universe but Eccleston dies and changes. Tennant its still broken from the Time War, but actively wants to be happier but has no idea how to do it, and carries that misery with him over his whole time there long with his feelings for Rose. He loses her, and loses himself in adventures with Martha Jones who falls for him at the worst time but has the strength to leave once she realizes he'll never feel the same way. Once again she leaves and after meeting her once Donna Noble is a breath of fresh air. He lets her in as a friend and her departure becomes the hardest pill to swallow because she wanted to travel forever and can't even remember him without burning up. Lonely god is an apt description of him and eventually when he dies he tries to make peace with his fate (despite not wanting to go) and becomes Matt Smith Smith tries to leave the memories of the Time war behind him and loses himself in adventures with Amy and Rory as their bizarre imaginary friend of sorts. River Song comes along and complicates his life more only to eventually lose all of them over time, which forces him to retreat once again until the mystery of Clara rears its head and he can't turn away. Of course by the time the mystery is solved he has to come face to face with the Time War once again, and with Tennant and the War Doctor sets everything as right as possible. He makes a last stand on Trenzalore and get's a new regeneration cycle. He saves the day once again at the expense of regenerating into Peter Capaldi. Capaldi is more troubled and introspective at first, trying to decide what kind of man he is and runs into the Master as Missy. Through his time he confronts his anger, regret, and feels like a time Lord that has tried to learn from his experiences from the Time War as opposed to running from it. This scene is a perfect example of a man who internalized his pain and tries to use it to help people that are lost, like he was for so long. You see the whole of the Doctor's personality through Capaldi's run: aloof, bitter, impish, childlike, regretful, and is accepting of who he is. Even when he finally leaves, he comes to accept his own time as the Doctor and lets himself go. Whether you enjoyed all of the revival or not, you have to respect the effort to string these elements in such a way that it's still the story of one person's struggle through pain and always looking for redemption. Sadly I never feel this continuity in current Who, but that's me. Here you see the whole of revival Who's pain on display in a powerful and effective scene.

This is, hands down, the single best 10 minutes of ANY season of Doctor Who, and as far as I am concerned cemtes Capaldi as the BEST version of the Doctor ever. And I grew up with Baker as "my Doctor". The fact that neither Peter Capaldi or Jenna Coleman recieved any recognition or awards for pulling out so much raw emotion for this particular scene should be considered nothiong short of criminal.

I think this episode was broadcast at just the right time; following the Paris Attacks and on the day before Remembrance Sunday. With so much talk of revolution and vengeance, something like this hits home.

This is honestly my favorite scene out of the entire of modern doctor who.

His line about holding pain tight in your hand, till it burns. Then using that pain to protect others from having to feel that pain... Chills. Every time.

I love how you can visibly see Clara's heart sink at what the Doctor's describing. Her actress portrays the conflicting emotions in hearing someone you look up to describing something so horrible in excruciating detail showing her he isn't exactly who she thinks he is. 5:11

If that speech defines the Capaldi era of Who, then I doubt people will be complaining. This is easily Steven Moffat's best speech, even better than some of the stuff he did for Tennant and Smith.

I love the bit around 3:00 where the Doctor asks “What’s it going to be like? Paint me a picture”; the fact that the mundane reality after the war hasn’t been considered speaks volumes about the lack of foresight with the war

Watching this with the situation in Israel. Wow. I have never watched an Episode before, but this story telling and acting is so compelling.

World leaders should be made to watch this scene when they take office

It’s March 1st, 2022. This speech is just as important now as it was back then.

This scene is not only great in the Doctor Who universe but actually perfectly describes the issue with terrorism and the way we fight it. So many parallels to our situation. Both of the episodes describe perfectly the fight with terror that we have today.

When he says “when I close my eyes” it’s so fucking real holy shit

3:42 I LOVE that question he asks. Because it speaks of an almost entirely unknown aspect of violent revolutions that the average person who wasn't a part of it, or covering them, knows. When the revolution is over, 9 times out of 10, the real people in power during the revolution, execute the revolutionaries. Because they know how to topple systems, how to wage guerrilla war. They know, literally, all the tricks to bring down their "brave new world". And therefore they represent a threat, The last threat to go. So I love the deep, easily missed but obviously understood, meaning in that question.

Capaldi at his best. His craftsmanship is so sincere, so on point... i don't think anyone could pull this scene off any better than he did. His tenacity brought tears in my eyes.

Here in 2022 watching the world play this out again. Where's The Doctor when we need them?

The raw emotion that you sense from Capaldi’s speech. The movements and gestures he makes, and the way he switches between The Mad Doctor and The Timelord that we know is constantly suffering internally... I have not seen anyone who has managed to give this much tension and gravity to a scene. It weighs even more when you realize the boxes are empty. Because now, you’ve started to think like he has. Seen things through the Doctor’s perspective. It was beautifully done.

I am so annoyed that doctor who didn't win Best Drama or Best actor this year at the Television Awards it so deserved it just on this scene alone it deserves so much more!!!

I want to send this to all the all the world leaders

This scene, right here, was probably the 12th Doctor’s most defining moment, and what made me fully accept Capaldi as the Doctor. I mean, I thought he was a good Doctor before this, and he is a really good actor, but this scene pretty much erased any remaining doubts I had about him and made me say, “Hello Doctor.”

I have no idea how many times I have watched this scene. The message itself is so powerful on it's own, but for anyone who knows the show and the doctor it's so much more powerful.

I forgot just how powerful this speech was..... and to think we may be entering his last season.. I hope not

God as much credit as Peter Capaldi gets for this scene Jenna Colman does such a great job in this scene as Bonnie

This is why he’s my favorite Doctor, this speech here was the culmination of every Doctor up to him in one bitter laugh that showed his horror and pain that he had to live with until he reset the moment and saved his people.

I haven’t stopped thinking about this scene for weeks now

Watching this speech before taking a speech class or unit and after one is a completely new experience. You can see how he’s reaching down to speak genuinely and freely. Exploiting ethos, logos, and pathos in a way the professional speeches I had to analyze for the class didn’t. The writer of the speech: Brilliant for composing such a work that can really dig into your feelings and make you really think. The speaker: Just as brilliant. Execution of the speech is just as, if not more, important as the writing. Sending out raw emotions, staying in character, the hand motions and movements to emphasize points. Brilliant and beautiful. I can’t say much more. To comprehend what’s happening is one thing. To explain it fully and it’s effects is another. I feel as I feel as if someone watching this as their introduction to Doctor Who (Given some Zygon background info on their goals, of course) could gleam so much about the Doctor’s past and what kind of show this is as a whole. Intense action, but what’s truly up front is the mind games, speeches, and quiet moments where you’re on the edge of your seat where no music is present. That’s all I can say about this. Everything else you have to understand on your own.

"I did this on very important day for me" the end of the time war

"They only way anyone can live in peace is if they are prepared to forgive. So why dont you break the cycle? ...You dont know... how many hearts will be broken, how many lives shattered... until everybody does what they were always going to have to do from the beginning. Sit. Down. And. Talk. ...And do you know what you do with all that pain? Shall I tell you where to put it? You hold it tight... till it burns your hand. And you say this: no one else will ever have to live like this. No one else will ever have to feel this pain. Not on my watch." These words are what I need to remember. Not for war, not for politics. But for family and for all those who come from unloving homes. I came from a cycle of abuse passed down from mother to daughter. I refuse to continue the cycle of resentment and bitterness. I might have endured a lot of pain but if I can help, just by being someone willing to hear a fellow abused child's story and tell them it's not all in their head... if i can minimise the pain then I will have done my job. I can't save them from being hurt, but I can save them from having to wait 22 years to realise what is happening to them. Not on my watch.

Of all the great scenes that are there in Doctor Who, I've come to the conclusion that this is, for me, the best one. Because Peter Capaldi manages to show all twelve doctors in these 10 minutes and he delivers every word in absolute perfection.

"No one else will ever have to live like this. No one else will ever have to feel this pain! Not on my watch!" "It's hell, isn't it? No one should have to think like that. And no one will. Not on our watch."

This is what happens when the writers and the doctors understand each other

A phenominal performance so much emotion, what makes it even better HE DID THIS IN ONE TAKE! I dont know if any of the other doctors, even my beloved TB could pull that off!

This scene cemented Capaldi as one of - if not my favorite - Doctor.

what makes this the speech to end all speeches is how different the 10th-11th-12th doctors are from each other. 10 would do it with either no words or he'd lead by example. 11 becomes a threat, taking them to rethink their choice or else. 12, he's grown up. He knows how painful it is trying to act like he can shoulder the burden. it must hurt to carry the pain of other people everyday, but he does it so that no one else would carry that same passion, that same pain.

Simply one of the best monologues of the series. Series wasn't all bad. This double episode and Heaven Sent were incredible.

That "I forgive you" hits hard man. You can just hear it in his voice.

This is easily the greatest...the most well written ..one of the most emotionally powerful..and magnificently acted scenes in all doctor who leading on to so much other parts of Cinema

And this speech again will not be given a thought by those who don’t watch the show. This speech is one of the best anti-war speeches in modern history, and is especially relevant now after the shooting in Las Vegas, but nobody will think twice about this speech, because they think Doctor Who is just some dumb sci-fi show.
