If I Could Only Own 1 Watch - The Perfect Do-It-All Rolex: Datejust vs Explorer

As I mentioned in a recent video, I'm done with Rolex. I don't plan to purchase a new one anytime soon, mainly because there are already multiple Rolex watches I love in my collection-most importantly the Rolex Explorer (ref. 114270) which I consider the perfect, do-it-all, any situation watch that works with almost every sartorial selection. However, as my Explorer is currently away for servicing, I've been reacquainted with an old flame-a classic Rolex two-tone Datejust (ref. 16233) belonging to my wife-which has triggered so many memories, emotions and new discoveries. But compared to my current line-up which includes the Rolex Explorer, a Tudor Submariner (ref. 79190,) Rolex Day-Date (ref.18238,) Rolex GMT-Master II "Pepsi" (ref. 16710,) and my "Bluesey" Tudor Submariner (ref. 16613,) if I had to pick just one out of all of them, it would absolutely be the Datejust. Why is this watch so compelling? How does it compare to all the others? And if I could only own one watch for the rest of my life, why is it currently my number one choice? If you had to choose only one watch to wear for the rest of your life, what would it be? Please share in the comments below!

Perhaps an unpopular opinion but if i could only have 1 watch for the rest of my life it would more than likely be a G-SHOCK.

Not unpopular, but would have to be something on the smaller side and either black or metal to suit more occasions but an entirely respectable choice.

Not an unpopular opinion at all, but it all depends on the occasions you wear a watch. You wouldn’t want to wear a G-Shock to anything formal. But, if you don’t go to make formal functions, it’s easily the best

The 1 Omega watch is the No Time to Die SeaMaster… it’s sporty, amazing specs & heritage, light from the titanium, still flashy with the bracelet… yet, all the while muted as a watch and can go under the radar… this is the perfect 1 watch from Omega.

A nice watch ⌚ but the faux patina is a little to much for my personal taste. That's the only thing I don't like the 300 series. Back in day that two tone datejust is THE watch many regular people would buy to celebrate a marriage, promotion, having a child/grandchild, starting own business etc. A proud moment you could walk into an AD, for that "made it" moment. Many a restaurant owner to trades people I knew would celebrate opening their business by buying this watch (and many are still wearing it day/night 30 years later). Despite seeming elegant today, due to its 36mm, its an incredibly solid watch. Datejust over an explorer all the way. Personally, if I had to choose one of my own watches as the only life, its a rolex 5700.

I have to save this one for a quiet moment this evening. I’ve been an Explorer fan for a long time but the Datejust addresses different concerns, concerns I’m becoming interested in again. Fluted bezels really are really something spectacular - like a disco ball for the wrist. My favorite DJ36 always have the miniature Romans on the outside of the minute/seconds track.

Loved this video, especially at the end where you say, ‘enjoy these feelings, enjoy these watches’’. Can’t argue with date just or explorer being the ultimate one watch. I’d lean towards explorer. You hit the nail on the head when you mentioned "nostalgia." I had a Rolex 1655 from 1978 until I sold it in 1997. And I immediately missed it. But I can't replace it as they are now going for $25,000+!!!! So I got a Steinhart Ocean GMT OLKO Special Edition and - every time I glance at my wrist - it's 1978 again. I LOVE the watch. My only Rolexes nowadays are a quartz Invicta Pro Diver and a Seiko SNK79K1. It is amazing to me how well made these things are for the money and superior to all the old Rolex I have bought and sold in the past. Being old now it is things like this and weird $20 17 Jewel HMT hand winds from India that interest me rather than needing to "impress" no one with an over priced piece of jewelry from arguably the best marketing company in the world.

That's a very interesting dive into the idea of what makes a good do-it-all watch. Oddly enough, I have a two tone datejust as one of the two watches in my small but hopefully growing collection. I've often thought about reducing my small collection to one watch. Not too sure I could do it. But one watch I will always have is my old style Seiko 5. Similar in style to a Datejust It really does have it all, classy looks that fits nearly all circumstances, great lume, strap monster, will go for decades, brand with great history and affordable. Are they the best watches ever made and can I go diving in it? Probably not. But that doesn't stop me wearing it with pride, and it never fails to bring a smile to my face. Great video as always and onwards and upwards dear sir 👍

Just a few days ago I visited my old university with a dear friend of mine I first met there as a freshman exactly 25 years ago. Those feelings of nostalgia were very strong for us that day. Sadly, no particular watch is connected with these memories as that was way before my interest in the hobby started. Interestingly the purchase of my Omega Speedmaster Moonwatch this year also increased my appreciation for my Sinn 556i as a do-it-all piece that is less complicated, more robust and somehow classless, joining entry-level simplicity with borderline luxury quality.

Amazing intro TGV! Love the editing during Gruber’s fall. For me, it used to be my Seamaster Professional 300, blue dial (2018 version). But then I was finally able to acquire a Submariner 124060. If I only had the Sub for the rest of my life, I would be very happy. I’ve had thoughts of selling the Seamaster and replacing it with a Speedmaster. Two iconic watches: The Sub and the Moonwatch. Great video! To me, the conundrum of the “only 1 watch” issue is that there will always be some activity or situation for which the watch is ill suited. For those who hardly ever wear a suit and never a tux, the watches in the video (and most of the ones in the comments) are 99.9% solutions. However, for those who do, most of these watches aren’t a particularly good fit. That said, the classic DJ36 or 41 probably come closest to the “1 watch” mark. For me, if you put a gun to my head, the 1 watch would be - ALS 1815 annual calendar.

In my opinion, between the two the Datejust is a formal watch that can cover other bases while the Explorer is the true do-it-all. I can easily see someone using it on the beach Saturday, at Mass in the Sunday and back to work in the Monday. It feels moderate but has an appeal to adventure - like many of us, i believe. It's the sole Rolex i would care to have although i'm more inclined in looks (and price) to the Lorier Falcon and Smiths Everest. By the way, i hope that Dan Henry take a look into a smallish 3-6-9 watch like these in the future...

Of all the luxury pieces I have tried on in AD’s, the two (I know you said 1 but hey) that stood out the most were the blackbay58 - the hark back to older variations, lack of crown guard, the use of gilt and the size all spoke to me. The second being the new Rolex Explorer1, to see how far it’s come, the beautiful 3,6,9, the gorgeous lume, the history behind it, the under the radar appeal and the fact it was Flemmings watch of choice. I stipulate tried on in AD’s because my Dads 59 Omega small seconds is incredibly special as well but needs to be cared for greatly. So that’s three… oh dear

Great essay, on this great watch. (Though I’m personally not a big fan of the Roman numerals) My father in law owns a 67 two-tone datejust with jubilee bracelet. He bought it with his first pay-check. I looked at it properly the other day and it’s FANTASTIC! Even though I always find two-tone a little brash; due to it’s age, the dial has faded & its shininess (is that a word?), has subdued a little. I will never wear it, as it eventually will belong to my missus & then my daughter; as you always say, it’s a watch you can hand down generations. 😉

I find I use a chronograph a lot to time things, if I had to restrict myself to one do-it-all watch I'd probably go for a Speedmaster '57, which is not huge (41.5mm) and also has a separately adjustable hour hand, useful when you travel. An alternative would be the Nivada Grenchen Chronomaster, at about 20-25% of the price of a Speedmaster '57.

Hi TGV! If I have to choose only one watch out of my current collection it would be my Cartier Santos (Ref. WSSA0037) for now. Its relatively versatile. But it might be that I would look for an Omega Aqua Terra as THE one watch. It has got this understatement I like. Best regards, Claus

Question for you. If a watch has no day/date complication, can a watch face or dial be installed upside down to create a left hand crown watch? I mean, the movement will still 'move' clockwise. Or might this upset an automatic watch's rotor? Keep up the great work!

Question about the 114270, Tristano: I have one, and I find it's not the best with straps because of the spring bar proximity to the case. It tends to cut into natos, for example. Have you experienced this? Do you have any tips to workaround this issue? Thanks!

For me, it's a 5 digit sub. No one will think twice if you wear it with a suit and you could, conceivably, still use it in the water. THAT'S go anywhere do anything. Or save your money and buy a small collection so you don't need to worry about it!

My quintessential pick from Rolex is still Oyster Perpetual Milgauss. Splashes of orange accents with the eye catching seconds hand is pure bliss for me. I also love the fact it's a no date watch with a clean dial all things considered. I can't forget the stunning green sapphire crystal it completes the look.

After having bought, obsessed over, and sold many “GADA” watches, I’m currently settled fairly comfortably on a DJ 41 as an everyday wear. The configuration I chose (rhodium / jubilee / domed bezel) is definitely not too noticeable and screams “I’m a watch” more so than “I’m a Rolex”. Thanks for the video.

Very tough call to make TGV. I have been lucky enough to own both but the one I kept, after selling a 5 digit DJ and 14060, was a mid 90s 14270. Classy, strap monster and goes with anything and suitable anywhere from meetings to mountains, board room to the beach and even diving to 25m. It just does it all and mine has never missed a beat. in 30 plus years though I do service it every five to six years to ensure it keeps going like a charm. And it does

I often ask myself this question. I put on a watch in the morning, one that I havent worn in a while but one I know will never leave my collection. I genuinely feel I could sell all others at that point. In the evening, I am thinking what to put on my wrist tomorrow ;) If I had to make a choice? I dont know, almost feels like asking me which kid I would sell last. Impossible choice…

It would have to be an Explorer 1 36mm. It threads the needle between sporty and dressy very well. Add a leather strap and it'll work with a suit/tux.

This is a tough one. I bought my first Rolex back in 1985, a two-tone Datejust. Yes, somewhat cliche. I still wear the watch occasionally. I also have a 39mm Explorer I that I like wearing it too. But if I have to pick one I will probably go with my 2004, 16623 a two-tone 40mm Yacht-Master. It's quite versatile and seems to fit with any occasions.

Great content. I love my datejust (8 years on from what I now realise was lucky - as I just bought it on holiday from an AD and that didn’t seem weird at the time) As it’s an older model it doesn’t have any lume though. So perhaps… My one watch - is the next one I’m going to buy! 😊

It’s interesting. Looking at my watch case. The only watch that I own that could do literally anything I’m likely going to do is my Islander Rangemaster. It’s the newest piece in the box but honestly the only the robust enough to be sufficient in all scenarios I’m likely to encounter and with a flexible enough design to work with whatever I wear. Dressing it up or down with strap options as the scene dictates.

I love your channel. I know you review everything from Rolex to Casio and I really appreciate that. I have nothing against a Rolex, but I doubt I will ever own any watch that costs upwards of 5K. You've talked about "value" in past videos and I believe value is relative to one's financial abilities. For me, I'm wearing an Orient Kamasu Automatic Blue and it ran $150. For me, this is getting on up to my ceiling for what I will pay for a watch. Honestly, I think I would be happy if this Orient was the only watch I owned. I know that sounds silly coming after watching a video about a Rolex, but it is all relative isn't it? Maybe one day I'll jump to a $300 to $500 watch and make that my flagship? Maybe this Orient gives me as much satisfaction as could a much more expensive watch. Beauty is truly in the eye of the beholder. I'm not judging anyone who likes much more expensive watches. I'm not even envious. I guess I dig "low budget" watches and that's ok with me. I'm rambling now... I do love mechanical watches and I do not, nor do I want to own a "SMART" watch. So there is that going for me. Keep up the great work sir with your wonderfully entertaining and informative videos. Thank you!

I wear my late 80's Seiko quartz daydate/fluted/jubilee in the same colorway! With a silver signet ring on the same hand! Since i have switched jobs to a more desk role, this is really my go-to. I used to wear my casio-royale for the 4 alarm function timing my breaks. I guet some inspiration from my Dad, he wears a Tudor presidential date-just on a rolex band, he has had it for as long as I can remember before I was born. Only his is all silver. Day date or date-just is 10/10.

A great question was posed in the intro: What if there was only one watch? I would go down the Flighty path with my Citizen Blue Angels Skyhawk titanium. For both a pilot and traveler, it does it all while being so light in weight that it hardly feels like it's on my wrist.

My friend you are very lucky to be able to wear a 36mm watch on your wrist and look like a 44mm would look at mine! It leaves you with so many options!!! My main squeeze is a 47mm Auguste Reymond 6498 flieger type, but my goal is to get ahold of a Sinn 6110 technik at some point and my grail is a Cartier santos 100 2656, if and when funds will allow. Keep up the good work...

Seiko SKX. The amount of modification options you have are endless, so you can always keep it fresh. No mod options on a Luxury watches besides the strap/bracelet. Servicing would be cheap also, and you could replace the movement for $50 if you’d like.
