Just knowing that 1 person wrote and produced and played , also recorded the whole album in his basement . Built the electronics he needed to get the sounds . Pitched the album to the record producers and then had to find the people who could play and sing what he wrote ! He was also told the producers wanted the album to be produced in their studio . He was able to make it look like he was doing what they asked and was really doing it in his basement ! Tom Schultz is Boston . He also graduated college with a degree in electrical engineering which made it possible for him to build what he needed . Taught himself how to play the instruments after college and started a business , by building and selling the electronics to other musicians . Not bad considering he did it all from his basement !!

Not all, the Preppies and Jocks at our HS hated it, we played it before the album came out, as I did record reviews then and did the lunch time music in the Cafe, and they ripped me a new one, screaming at me get this crap off, during Foreplay. A year later to that day, played it again and those left sheepishly left the lunch room.

Man you are so right ! I remember we all went to the beach one time and on the boardwalk there was a booth. The booth had a big wheel with numbers on it. Put my quarter on the number on the board at the front of the booth. They spun the wheel and it stopped on my number. I won , and the prize was you got to pick any 1 album from around 100 they had on display. I picked the first Van Halen album. We left the beach and got to our friend Dannys house. We all got a little baked and dropped the needle. What we heard and expierenced was jaw dropping. Never heard anyone play guitar like that. We were stoked.

This is the song I cranked up, over and over and over... every day... to practice on drums. When my sister moved out, I decided her old bedroom needed to be my studio. No recording setup...just my stereo, and my drum kit. All summer long, while my parents were at work, I was "in the studio,"... honing my skills to this song. Even though Neil Peart was my "hero," Sib Hashian, of Boston, through this album, was my mentor. R.I.P. Sib and Neil.

Tom Scholz married the best of jazz-influenced prog rock (like ELP, Yes, early Genesis, etc.) with the instrumental mastery of 70s arena rock (like Led Zeppelin, Queen, Allman Brothers, Doobie Brothers, Steve Miller Band, etc.). Does this still sound VERY relevant to me today just because I'm old, or because it still IS? Timeless, in my book! I may be 61 now (and it really DOES "feel like" i still should be 28... the decades indeed DO become an unbelievably fast whoosh, just like we're always told!!), but being 61, I live in the same world that today's music exists in, and i can appreciate and critique it perhaps even "better" than someone younger, because I also LIVED the prior decades of music that led up to today being what it is! I'm kind of liking that "old age wisdom" thing lately. It's a real thing, you young whipper snappers! 😉😂💞 🎶 🎹 (see how old i am here on my own channel)

Those "spaceships" on their albums covers/CD covers are guitars. Took me like 30 years to realize that. So the uniqueness of Boston is unmatched, mainly because of the the guy who started this all, Tom Scholz. Tom was going to MIT, he built a lot of his specialized instruments and musical gear himself, hence the uniqueness. Truly a genius. Still, my favorite band of all time, and this is my favorite song and it will be played at my funeral when it's time. 🙂

I grew up in the 70s. I remember so very well listening to these guys. I loved them from the start. We did many many many outdoor parties with this plugged into the car stereo and the trunk open to take advantage of the bass. lol lol Boston was honestly one of my absolute favourite bands then and now still. I have spent many many hours with my kids listening to this music. We go out in the pool in the summer and have the tunes blasting at us. They now recognize Boston as soon as the guitar riffs start. Very distinctive sound for sure. The vocals are perfect. Brad Delp, lead singer, had the most beautiful voice and sang effortlessly hitting those super high notes. I dont have any negative things to say about this band. Smokin was a fav along with Rock and Roll Band, and so many others I cannot begin to list them. I also dated a guy who looked very much like Brad. lol lol .Come to remember but he could sing too but not as good. Thank you for this reaction. I still remember where I was and what I was wearing the day I first heard this song. I was 14 waiting on my dad to come out of the grocery store in the car and THIS came on the radio. I sat straight up in the car seat and turned it up, I knew right away it was a smash hit. Remember, by 1976 we had been exposed to GREAT rock music already, so something new getting attention like that from me was rare. Even by 14 I had been a guitarist for 6yrs. and could identify all the basic chords, as the progression was common. I was overjoyed by both the fact I could play this and it was spectacular.

Im 64 and still blast this album on the BOSE system in my '17 GEN 6 ZL1 Camaro, this is almost a perfect album, not a bad song on it. I went to the concert for this album and it was beyond incredible, theyre so good they sound almost the same live as on the album. In the top 3 debut albums ever released IMO.

Tom Scholz worked in a camera company called Polaroid, and he built this entire studio in his garage, wrote every song, quit the company and released. It went platinum

I was a teenager listening to this on my 8 track in my car, I also had the matchbook under the 8track to stop it from thumping but you youngsters don't know anything about that. Our Generation grew up on the greatest music ever every single Genre.

Last time I saw them was early 2000s. Great seats, 10th row center. Lights dim. Smoke appears on stage. Lights start twinkling. Then ceiling lights blind you as that spaceship lowers from the stage ceiling. Tom Scholz appears at keyboard with the guitar on his back, to play the intro. At the pause… he jumps on a rope and does a Tarzan over our heads. As he lands, confetti shoots out at us. Then swings guitar to front as Longtime starts. Brad Delps vocals reach out and grab your soul and Sib Hasian’s drums set that beat. My fav 70s band. Brad and Sib are gone now but I still have the original album and that first album is stunning. Thirteen hits…. Not one stinker. And 46 years later I know every word and every note to every song. Air guitar? Hell yeah🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻

I was 17 when this came out! And, let's remember, Tom Scholz made the whole thing himself, played every instrument, developed the electronics for the recording in his rented basement. The sound of my teenage years, muscle cars and the drive in! Thanks guys!
