I would keep the unit . You cannot buy one right now at retail price because of scalpers you will pay like 350.00 for one. For seeing the unit looks brand new to me. I sent back a PS3 back in the day an unit they sent me out was a different unit I don't think they take the time to fix unit they just rather send you a replacement an maybe later on sell that unit as a refurbished unit.

I'm getting the feeling it's new. They probably had inventory ready to send out just in case they had defective units. The one they sent you was never intended to be sold on store shelves so they didn't include the sleeve. I could be wrong but refurbished units usually have signs of use.

That replacement unit is probably a brand unit. The Portal hasn't been out very long to begin with. So they probably just have a bunch that are set aside to be used as replacements. They wouldn't have a retail sleeve if they were only meant to be replacement devices.

Only just getting to watching the video, the fact it has the screen peel on again likely implies they sent you a brand new unit. Those likely only get applied on the assembly line. This is quite likely not a refirb. Keep in mind that the external sleeve it didn't have would be a market-by-market thing... different languages etc. So they wouldn't have that on their service replacement units. The internal box would be standard for everyone. You totally got a NEW portal here.

You can tell it’s 100 percent new. Only thing missing is the outer sleeve. Hasn’t even been out a month yet. I doubt they have refurbished one’s laying around. Nothing about your replacement looks used. I would for sure keep it considering they are sold out everywhere.

They would not include that sleeve because those are custom market to market. Their new replacement units sitting on shelves would not have that. He totally got a NEW unit here... that peel would only be applied at assembly line. Kinda bonkers he doesn't catch on to this...

I don’t like that they didn’t give you the original box, but your unit is very possibly a brand new unit. You said it took them about 10-11 days from the day you sent out to the day receiving this back to you. There’s no way Sony moves this quickly if they did plan to repair the issue and send the original unit back to you. That would take a company that size at least 4-6 weeks to do even if the issue is minor.

I would like an explanation of what happened to your ps portal. Pushing forward and back on left stuck creates a weird sound sometimes lol a clicking sound. I’m wondering if the ribbon cables are issue.

They obviously sent a new Portal the same way you sent yours. Just the system without accessories, so of course it’s not in a new sealed box.

I recommend you check out Episode 2. I show exactly how I sent it back to them based on how they said it should be shipped within the original packaging.

@@CKidM Anything you send other than unit itself has a high chance that it won’t be returned. Clearly stated on sony’s website under return packing instruction. I think that’s on you

I really don’t think it’s a reverb unit, I’d love to know if you ever find out though. If it was then yes they should have said and offered you this as an option or a refund. Given there was no communication I imagine this is a new replacement unit. Given the time they have been out I can’t imagine they are fixing broken units and sending out as replacements at this point.

Awesome 👏🏽 video bro, I doubt that PlayStation Portal is refurbished, it’s prolly brand new from the extra they have and they sent you that, so they can work on the other one and see why did stick drift happen so fast, but you can also fix those thumbsticks yourself really easy! Under warranty I set my PS5 back last year to get a new disc drive because it would not read any discs and it sounded like it was just continually spinning. Sony did return my actual PS5 with a new disk drive which is loud AF but it works.

I think due to the current market price and how hard they are to get, even if it was refurbished it's better than getting money back and then possibly waiting another 2-3 months to try and get one at Retail price. You didn't mention if cosmetically it looks refurbished, just that the serial number has changed. The biggest question is "What caused the stick to stop working" and why couldn't they fix it by just replacing it? It's concerning now as it could be hardware outside of the joystick or a software issue. Glad you got it back though. Keep up the great videos

Y'all bugging. For a lot of electronic devices you're not getting the same one back. They toss that shit in a pile and fix them later or use them for parts. You get a new unit or a refurb. With the Portal neing so new it's most likely a new one. This isn't some new thing.

I am having a portal issue and was wondering if you could test yourself? I sent my unit to Sony and they also sent me a different one, same as you but I am still having the same exact problem with both. I have made a Reddit where some others are having the same problem. It’s an issue with the dpad, I have posted and tagged you in the video on twitter.

Mines freshly new and already starting off with that left stick being slow or way too fast. Also noticed when trying to click the x button to click into something it sometimes doesn't work, same goes for the back button. (o button) Not happy if I have to send this in already!! Please let me know if this is exactly what you were talking about. I viewed and listened to the whole thing and sure sounded like the problem.

Typically most companies won’t fix a small issue like that. The idea is to get you the unit back faster. When I needed to replace my iPhone a week after it came out they had phones set aside just for that purpose. If they stopped and fixed every single unit; it could take months to get it back.

Y’all missing the point. What if he has this same problem with the new one they just sent. The model number is the same which means that those models are probably going to break faster or stop working. No one wants to send the portal back that much. And if you are paying premium for a device the shelf life should last longer.

@@dontedavis6414 how am I missing the point ? I work in IT and it’s usually quicker for us to give them a new laptop , instead of wasting their time repairing the unit. There’s always a contingency plan for defective units. For easy numbers less say Sony launched with 1 million units. If they had to repair 10k they would be at the industry standard 1%. If Sony said “ Hey man we need to repair your exact unit, it’s going to take 4-6 weeks” he wouldn’t be happy either.

It's probably a warranty unit loads of companies keep warranty units to send out . Its definitely going to be cheaper just to replace it rather than fix it as its only £199 rrp

This is standard operating proceddure for such products. Don't waste time, send a replacement asap while they fix yours to give to someone else.

@@CKidM Dude... i finally watched the video. This is NEW. How did you not realize this? That peel would only be applied at assembly line. The external sleeve would not be on the box because those are only put on when they ship to retail. This is a new, unused, replacement unit that they would have had on-hand from the start. Hearing you repeat over and over "they sent me someone elses portal" was quite frustrating and this entire video is invalid.

Read the warranty paper. They say specifically that either a repair or replacement and that it may be either a new or factory refurbished one they will send you.

Microsoft did the exact same thing to my Elite Series 2 controller twice - sent me refurbished controllers under thier warranty and not my original controller back. Very disappointing they didn't even send me a new controller either

Wow - I’m sorry Sony was not honest in the way they handled it. This whole experience you have had has settled it for me - I’m gonna get a handheld PC which will have Hall effect joysticks to be my “way in” into my PS5, to do some mobile game playing. Thank you for doing the video series on the experience you had - it’s helped me decide which direction I want to go.

The biggest evidence it's a new replacement is the paper film, it's not to protect the screen during shipping, it's to protect when moving down the assembly line from one worker to the next. LCD OEMs apply those before it ever arrives at the assembly plant.

@@Boss_Fight_Wiki_muki_twitch , perhaps but, given that he was told that he would be given some sort of notice prior to it shipping (so he could ask questions) and that never happened, …in the very least shows a lack consistency between what tech support is telling customers and what is actually happening. In the very least, it gives the appearance of shadiness, if not out right evidence of it. At best, communication should be light years better than it is. After spending $200 on a product and having it crap out in such a short time AND then having to dig around to find the support AND then having to pay for the shipping to have it fix….the least they could do is let him know that he was getting a new device.

They did that to me with my elite controller. The bottom pieces were coming off and I sent it in. And they sent me a new looking one but it wasn't the same one..

Keep it if that's what you want. I agree with you that Sony should have informed you in the beginning that there is a chance that you will not receive your original portal back thus giving you the option to approve the switch for a refurbished device. That's shady business. The product is in high demand and getting your hands on one is pretty much impossible so I'm glad you do have one to share with us. Hopefully you won't experience any problems with the new device. 🤞🏾

It’s not a refurbished unit if u have to install the software updates and stuff it’s most likely a brand new unit . I doubt Sony took off the installed updates . And factory reset doesn’t remove the updates

I have seen that in USA giving an item back at Best buy or other shops, they just refund you, and playstation customer service is bad, here in Germany i send it back to the shop, and they took all the costs of shipping and sending it to Sony (since i didnt want a refund, because getting one in Germany is hard enough). And i hope they will fix it here in Germany, and not just send a refurbished back, since its not a hard fix, just swap the analog stick component and thats it (I would have done it myself but there are no spare parts)

It's not another person's devices. They always have a separate stock that are open box units that way your old one goes back to manufacturer and open box stock goes to you. That's basically brand new just doesn't have a brand new box. Kinda sucks about the sleeve but at least this works?

Every RMA I've ever done has never come back as my original unit or with the original boxing. I'm not surprised and I would be willing to bet that in their warranty and replacement guides they probably state that you may or may not get your original unit back.

So out of the blue you will get 2 emails...1 saying that the unit has been fixed and the second email stating that the unit is being shipped. I got the emails late and they were already in the mail.

You got the serial number of this unit. PlayStation should be able to tell you if its new or pre-owned.

What if you received a new one but not in a retail box, because you sent it to fix it... Usually They will not send you a retail one if they change in a new one.

Dude it’s a new unit, they probably do this for turn around time. Would you like to wait weeks and weeks for ur actual one or wouldn’t you rather they send you a brand new one while they fix the other and eventually send that to someone else as refurbished

Dude, that’s not Refurb. That’s a new, replacement unit (Apple does same thing). That’s why you got it back so fast. Only party foul is no sleeve but that’s normal practice for new/replacement units.

Ha, is this your first warranty support claim with a major tech company? Honestly, I think that your experience is better than i would have expected. You spoke with a live support person and got a new functioning device back to you within 10 - 14 days. Sony probably feels like they did a great job!

I remember using my warranty on my PS4 Pro and getting back a refurbished PS4 Pro. I was heated over that. Only reason I was mad was because they told me I would be getting back a brand new PS4 Pro and I didnt. Grrrrrr.... Im sorry, but I think if you have a warranty. Then I feel you should get a brand new one sent back to you. .

Are you sure it’s a refurbished unit they sent you and not a brand new one because this product seems to be still a bit new for there to be refurbished units out there?

It's a lot of people sent theirs back from what I hear. But I could be wrong. I''m figuring it is a refurbished one because otherwise why wouldn't it be in a sealed retail box and missing an entire box

That’s sucks bro I assumed that’s what was going to happen cuz that’s just standard procedure for these big companies and most people don’t complain cuz they have a working device again. Not knowing what problems might arise down the line. They really should give a heads up or at least a note in the packaging when they send it back what they did and if you’re not happy what next steps you can take. Very bad customer support on this from Sony.

The biggest evidence it's a new replacement is the paper film, it's not to protect the screen during shipping, it's to protect when moving down the assembly line from one worker to the next. LCD OEMs apply those before it ever arrives at the assembly plant.

@@Boss_Fight_Wiki_muki_twitch Either way the issue is they should let the consumer know that, preferably before shipping but minimum afterward either in an email or in the box. “Boom here’s what happened in order to expedite the process we gave you a brand new one, or we gave you a refurbished one, or we fixed yours here’s the same one back” not saying anything and just sneaking another unit in the box, new or not, seems kinda fishy to me.

They really should've made the joy cons like the edge controller....replaceable. Wouldn't be surprised if they do an upgrade version they might do that in a year or two.

Dude, I’m fairly certain it’s a new unit. You ever break your new iPhone? I did. Went to the Apple Store, they have new units in unmarked boxes….they make a number of replacement units but don’t need the fancy boxing and packaging. It’s just the phone/unit. It’s not a refurbished model. My Xbox 360 had the RROD and I sent it out and they DID send me a refurbished model and I called to complain and they sent me a g/c for the Xbox store. Given how new the Portal is, you can likely bank on the fact that this is a new unit produced for damage replacement ones. All good.

They likely sent you a new unit that had a damaged outer sleeve, which would be unsellable from a retailers standpoint.

I've been playing my Portal more than my big screen since it's release and I'm loving it. It's definitely changed the way i game. It's nice and convenient to be able to have your PS5 with you in bed or at work. But this video definitely concerns me when i think about over usage and stick drift etc.

For now you may not be able to get your playstation replaced since the products are still new. Sony would just prefer to send you a new one as that would be faster

Well you probably won't have to worry about it unless you're like this dude and put your portal upside down. He was having it lean on the analog sticks. That's probably why his messed up in the first place because he didn't take good care of it. That would be like someone resting their controller upside down with the analog sticks being leaned on and then complaining about stick drift ...smh

Stick drift and over usage is nothing compare to the long term usability due to the PS Portal doesn’t support WiFi 6/6E which is the standard, no in built web browser so public WiFi is limited due to most public WiFi requires TOS’s and its power by a Qualcomm snapdragon 666+ which is a 6 year old chip and it’s under locked by Sony plus the device has a tendency to disconnect from the PS5 when in rest mode despite having a strong WiFi connection.

Looks like a brand new unit 🤷‍♂️. TBH, that's how the electronics industry is if you get a refurb. Imagine, according to how you view things, the logbook getting screwed up by only one s/n getting mistakenly switched, and they maybe have 10s of thousands in repair. That would be hell, and it would probably take longer to get your fixed unit back to you. That's why there is fine print when it comes to such things.

I would go for a full refund if it's refurbished!! But, I've got a feeling that it could be a brand new unit. There was supposed to be a re-stock in the UK this week but it looks to be still sold out everywhere so I suspect Sony might have kept hold of that stock to replace units that can't be repaired... ??

@@CKidM It's probably new but because you didn't include the charging cable a retail boxed package sealed wouldnt make sense. Thats probably one from before it's packaged. If you included the charger in the package I would imagine the return product if it had to be replaced would have been sealed. They're not going to give you a free charger.

Man i hate to break it to you but this practice is pretty much the standard. They do the same with thousands of dollar phones they send a refurbished unit everytime. The reason being usually is it'd take them longer to get your unit back to you then 1 that's already fixed. I honestly fix all my phones myself same with anything i can. Granted I'm sure you can't find the joysticks yet considering the product is hot off the press. Regardless never send everything back to them, I'm picky about keeping my boxes too so i get it. That's honestly why i fix my own stuff most the time, i keep the boxes everything always matches for me personally.

If they were not going to try to fix your unit they should of just shipped out a new unit so you could put the broken one in the box to send it back. Like they do with cellphones
