To give some context on Venus being "more habitable than mars": NASA said that Venus could be potentially habitable, as the high temperatures/extreme conditions are only on the ground. The plan would be to create sky bases that float high above the layer on the ground, where the conditions are better than that of mars due to regular temperatures (like earth), Venus still having an atmosphere, and similar air pressure.

2:33 that's because it's a potentially easier terraforming target. It's easier to remove the gases, and we could theoretically float habitats within the atmosphere at a level with similar atmospheric pressure and felt gravity to earth. There's a video or two on KZfaq by Isaac Arthur if I'm remembering right.

The argument for colonizing Venus does hold some weight to it. Venus has comparable gravity to Earth, plus if you go high above the Venusian clouds, the atmospheric pressure and temperature is more comparable to Earth's. If we want to colonize the surface though, we'd need to terraform the planet by freezing the atmosphere, somehow offloading all the dry ice and yeet enough asteroids towards Venus to introduce nitrogen and oxygen.

Pretty much, there are also other benefits such as not having to deal with as much radiation as on mars and since most of venus's atmosphere is CO2, we could actually use breathable air as a lifting gas as it is lighter than CO2 (or just use helium which could lift even more). There was actually a NASA paper on this topic if anyone wants to look into it (Colonisation of Venus by Geoffrey A Landis)

When that segment of the video came up, I thought about cloud cities as well. Heard those are possible on Venus once. @seagullman8720 күн бұрын
Can't believe I'm about to defend an Oceangate executive, but here I go: When space nerds talk about colonizing Venus, they're talking abput living in floating habitats in the upper layers of the atmosphere, NOT the surface. This is because the temperatures and pressures at that height are much more comparable to Earth, making it surprisingly easier to deal with than Mars. Also Mars' soil is actually hazardous to humans, so there's that too. Granted, issue with Venus is ghe risk that your floating cloud balloon city might suffer a leak, which would then send your habitat tumbling down into literal hell. But that's just a "small" tradeoff.
@dave951520 күн бұрын
Small? No that means death. You could probably find a way to make mars soil safe or something. Nothing to improve the conditions of Venus. It won't be for a long while and people should try to save earth from dying if anything cause there is no guarantee with the future.

The thing is, Venus actually *does* have habitable temperatures at around the same level that oxygen and nitrogen would float, so a floating habitat on Venus would work. Venus also has very similar gravity to Earth, and takes less time to get to, so it’d be better for our bones
@akpsyche129920 күн бұрын
In a little bit of defense of the Venus colonization idea, I have heard that you could have people colonize the upper atmosphere in what are basically airships filled with earth air, because Venus’ atmosphere is so dense they would float up there. That would mostly be for scientific research and would still be very different from actually colonizing the planet, though.
@chemplay86619 күн бұрын
You could harvest the atmosphere for fuel and then ship it into orbit and sell it to ships that want to go to Mercury to mine it.
@ATBZ19 күн бұрын
Response to the venus thing: the clouds on venus are so dense that stuff can float on them. So in short, the plan is floating cities. From there terraforming methoods diverge, with people like carl sagan who said to use genetically engineered bacteria to convert carbon in the atmosphere into organics, but the most accepted plan would to be to bombard the atmosphere with a ton of hydrogen taken from thier icy moons or from a gas giant. As well as iron aersol which would be taken from thier moons as well. This would leave atmospheric pressure at 3x earth, with nitrogen eventually dissolving into the newly formed oceans. And because of the new lack of greenhouse gasses, it will cool, especially after plant life is established. And if that doesn't work in a timely fashion a series of solar shades are planned to be used to kickstart cooling. Venus is definitely not easier to colonize but in contrast with mars, it can be actually terraformed and have things actually live there. Plus, its actually got a liveable amount of gravity.

In theory, you could avoid the heat by floating high the atmosphere. Venus’ atmosphere is dense enough that a blimp filled with regular Earth air would float. A toxic Venus atmosphere is also in theory more useful than a nonexistent Mars one since you can use it as a resource and it helps protect against cosmic radiation. In practice, I have no idea how sustainable a floating Venus city would be. Especially when dropping too low would instantly crush you like an ocean gate craft.

@@chemplay866 that sounds good, but how would you construct that without falling into one of the more volatile atmospheres in our galaxy? All I'm saying is that creating bubble domes, which can be heated by the generators that give it power, would be significantly easier to make because the methods used are rather close to modern construction. While you would have to take special measures on Mars to make sure that the human body doesn't wither in low gravity, it's significantly more resource and labor intensive to try and make a floating city above an acidic rainstorm than on stable ground, and we know humanity loves quick, identifiable progress. Plus the internals would probably suffer due to the relative proximity to the volatile atmosphere, causing massive problems with logistics. And how would you get more mechanical supplies? It would probably be really difficult to land a supply rocket on the city without falling into the abyss below Too long, didn't read: creating and maintaining a floating city is much more of a hassle than a simple ground bubble, so while it may be the eventual plan, we just don't have the right technology for it

Considering that a. the previous design failed, and b. it's a different challenge they're trying to complete, I really don't see the issue with that. Judging by the fact that it was controlled by a wireless controller, it's also likely that they're testing new piloting software or some other method of controlling the sub.

Well, on Venus it rains sulfuric acid and snows bismuthinite and galena. These two things are basically raw forms of lead and bismuth. Imagine surviving under continuous lead hail and sulfuric acid constantly raining onto your head.

They plan to terraform the venus well good luck about that they choosen their own deaths

@@ZxCv134-n3b Nah, it's basically somewhat similar to mars, just with overcomplication steps.

Colonizing Mars is just a Brainfart-Pet-Project popularized by Elon Musk, there are not a lot of desirable resources on Mars or reasons to go there, it is a measuring contest. Venus on the other hand is more interesting in resource and in general and also more reasonable to terraform than Mars (Kurzgesagt made a video on it), but I think our first priority should be the Moon.

Well yeah, you're not serious if you think we're launching spacecraft to other planets straight from the Earth. At least build most of it using lunar industry.

Not only is Venus insanely hot, but it also has clouds made of sulfuric acid. Venus has got to be one of the worst planets to attempt to colonize hands down.

Ocean Gate could maybe do this one. It’s not at a serious depth. The Titan was not rated for the depth it went and they knew that. Their reputation has been irreparably damaged and there is now way of fixing it.

You know that one Futurama episode where they go out fishing on their spaceship, then a giant fish pulls the ship down after Bender hooks it to the unbreakable tether? The reason why that's a problem is because spaceships are designed with different materials compared to submarines that withstand different types of pressure (0-1 Atmospheres compared to 1-300 atmospheres or something) ... It's gonna be like that but in reverse if he decides to make spaceships using his submarine knowledge.

Venus is a somewhat better option than Mars. However, you have the issue of that atmosphere. Despite that, you can survive above the clouds in mobile bases. So colonizing Venus would suck, yeah, but it's possible to survive.

erm ackshually i watched a video explaining that we can mine comets or any other ice formations in space to stockpile on Venus, and that it would have a better atmosphere than Mars if it were colonized ☝🤓
