Remaking a game means bringing up to the new technological capabilities of the time. Games don't need to be updated for MODERN AUDIENCES. It's a big redflag for me, they're not going to update the gameplay and graphics, they're going to bastardize the story for political agendas. And everytime someones does this, the result sucks >

Part of the reason why I decided to start translating 1000 year old Japanese stories into English and putting them on here is because of this. Modern storytelling is on life support, and I'm so tired of watching beloved franchise get remade for "modern audiences" and seeing the timeless, classic ideas that made them great ripped out of them like a fish getting gutted. I'm hoping that by exposing the world to very old Japanese stories, not only can I potentially give future artists something to craft killer stories out of, but also I want to highlight just how universal some of these ideas are: masculine men, feminine women, the importance of family, the importance of controlling impulses, compassion, strength, tradition, etc. All of these are found in abundance in Classical Japanese literature and by making these stories accessible to the world, somebody more talented than me can make something truly great. It also helps that it undermines the argument that good storytelling tropes are born out of a white, western, patriarchal system that serve only to perpetuate the status quo of western oppression. No, these ideas are found in stories all over the world, and aspiring artists discard them to the detriment of their work and the wellness of the wider world.

Keep in mind, they remove sexism from the heroes, but not the villains. It's as if they are afraid to show that a flawed character with bad traits can have conflict with others and perhaps develop as a person. As in, terrified of that last possibility itself.

Storytelling was timeless from the Odyssey, to Beowulf, to Shakespeare. Sure is weird this modern audience popped into existence ten years ago.

My guesses are that they'll change or tone down the romance card mechanic as some of those involved quite controversial circumstances. Ex: Geralt getting a starving elf's "romance card" after giving her bread. Alternatively they'll just make Geralt less based as he was far far far more based in Witcher 1 than in 2 or 3. Like how he essentially called Elves monsters with human faces or somesuch. BASED Keep in mind also that memory wiped Geralt in Witcher 1 tended to act more in line with the Witcher rules, like being more pro-human and non-interventionist. And of course they will continue to retcon Geralt having a creepy sickly pale skintone as they had done this for 2 and 3. Witcher 1 had some real nice authenticity despite its age that was lost in later games.

I'm similar to shads perspective but the thing is I never knew the collectable cards existed because I didn't play the game as a giggalo. They literally implemented it in a way that only the kinds of players who were interested in that sort of thing (or players that just mash x through cutscenes) would even experience it to begin with, plus having read the books I have to admit geralt is canonically a giggalo (but in his defense the love of his life was never faithful/exclusive to him either) and if you wanna roleplay the guy from the books well, sleeping around with any woman that offers is sort of a part of that.

I'm actually currently replaying through the Witcher 3, and I am immensely enjoying it! Far more than I did in 2015. Partially being, for a game that isn't *that* old, it's incredibly refreshing to play a game in 2023 that is unashamedly classic story-telling. Compared to the other drivel we get now. In a world inspired by Slavic (Polish) folklore and paganism, all the characters are white. The women are sexy, the women are capable on their own right without belittling Geralt, it's brutal, it's violent, the monsters are terrifying and it sucks you into the world. It feels exactly as it should. There's nothing that feels forced or out of place that would suck you out. It feels similar enough to actual middle ages history, but altered with monsters and monster slayers. It's close enough to our world and history to feel familiar, but it's fiction and creating something entirely new. It's astounding how easy it is to make a decent story and characters, and 8 years ago, we took it for granted. Now, it shines as a beacon of perfection against everything else that is currently releasing. It feels like a Polish guy wrote this story. All that said, I have utterly no interest and no confidence in what this company is doing next. It's a sad that we have to accept modern entertainment as this, but at least I have the option to go back and experience games from 2015. Modern entertainment sucks. Just go back and watch, read, or play anything from pre-2019 and you'll enjoy it far more than anything from today.

i got the first game at tesco back in 2007 while on the way from scool to catch a bus home - almost missed the bus because of it. so worth it. my computer barely handled the game, loading was very long, but i got a lot of time out of the game. i still remember the entire walkthrough 17 years later. the only black person was the main villain and when i hear modern audiences i feel like everyone except that villain will be raceswapped. as for the romance cards - i enjoyed collecting those :)

Companies know that a certain segment of their audience considers certain things red flags. That they knowingly raise these red flags demonstrates a clear lack of respect; and if they disrespect us then...

Once a company reaches a certain wealth or size, they will become woke. Mostly because there's financial incentives, loans, and relationships with partner companies that have to be Woke. It's a cancer that has infested these companies because ... Money is more difficult to obtain than it was in 2020 with lockdowns. Now, competition, recession, inflation have spiked and companies are losing their investors and starting to reduce risks and exposure to problems. Companies can't freely associate with Non-ESG companies, hence the marginally socialist agenda is not wrong, it's just that the incentive structures become gradually corrupted because the lure and attraction of financing, sustainable loans and other incentivised 'progressive' ideals requires an artificial ESG score to be high enough to gain access to loans and relationships with other ESG companies. If they do something that isn't "progressive" in social media, or does not have an explicit gender mix, the board could lose financing and risk a lower credit score, meaning they have to spend a lot of time & money to boost their ESG score to gain access to more funds. This becomes increasingly more achievable since executives tend to be placed into large corporate boards for security, and their position requires adherence to ESG. Once these wealthy plutocrats join dozens of Boards, they create an incentive to spend time, money, resources and wealth pursuing "Progress". When your business does not have a self-sustaining income, and the investors are skittish about risks and challenges, they want results. ESG scores are results that improve relationships. This isn't an option, it's a form of moral decay because there's only incentives and benefits that are visible to the kind of people who can't analyze risk or reward structures.

To put a really optimistic spin. As Witcher 1 was built on the Neverwinter Nights engine, maybe someone will take the "new" Witcher engine and redo Neverwinter Nights and the dev tools. (Yep not going to happen).

I read the Witcher series over November/December. Positively enraptured by it. It balanced fantasy and maturity without belittling me as a reader. The games MADE CD Projekt who they are today; the Modern Audience will adapt, or they can leave.

Don't know if this makes you feel better at all but last I heard, it wasn't CD Project Red actually making the game, they'd subcontracted it out to a studio (I forget the name) that had a lot of the creators of the original game in it.

I DISAGREE, games should be given the same treatment as films or novels when it comes to "modernizing" them. Make sure they function on a modern system, and that's it. No graphical updates, no mechanical updates, no removal of content, just the game as it was but without any hoops to get it to operate on modern hardware. It baffles me why this one particular medium we're totally fine with completely changing the work so drastically that it the "remaster" may not even be the same game anymore.

If witcher 1 hadn't had the 'sex cards' then i probably wouldn't have played it. It was one of the major things that stood out from the competition for me (as someone who had never read the books, and still hasn't). When I saw the sex cards I knew I was playing a game that wasn't pulling punches and wasn't holding anything back and I knew it was gonna be a good time. Now I'm a huge fan of the game series I think Witcher 3 contends for greatest game of all time.

I don't have an issue removing the cards, as long as they're replaced with animated scenes. Mods will add the cards back in anyway, providing the romance options aren't removed altogether.

What does this mean for the PS4 Game of the Year edition of The Witcher 3?

Above all I hope they handle Siegfried well. Despite being from the oldest game he was the one of the best most memorable characters. Shame they didn't do more with him in 2 and 3. Best case scenario is that he lives in the canon ending this time. And of course the Order ending is the best ending.

The phrase 'updated for modern audiences' instantly turns me off to something and makes me write off everything to do with it.

At least we know not to care about it/waste our money.

7:15 there's also the angle of what they're admitting to at this point, and what is actually being changed. The vast majority of the reversions that people hate aren't announced before the launch. Otherwise they'd hurt their bottom line.

The Witcher (aka the first game) is my favourite, its not perfect the combat is just a rythim game, but I dont play for the combat, I play for the immersion, this game has such atmosphere with the music and the enviroment, it really hit close home for me, literary because I live in eastern europe, and I've seen villages like in the game in the museum here, and the game also has a hungarian dub for some reason and it actualy acceptable (where it really matters atleast) so it a real gem for me. The hearth cards, I like them, theyre a really nice tastefull art, usually something I could imagen someone having hung up on their walls, the scenes the start them arent anything to graphic that you havent scenes in movies allready. They really feel like, mementos to me, a memory of good times you take with yourself in your journey. But what Im really worried about is my boi Siegfried getting butchered, one of the big themes around the first game is the conflict between the Order of the Flaming rose and the, elven terrorist scum the sco'atel. From the Orders side you meet Siegfried, who's a total bro, a realy Knight of Virtue, small spoiler, but if you save people who were chased into a crypt to die by monsters instead of chasing the scum elven terrorists who pushed them there, Siegfried will want to give you a medall, he caress more thst you saved innocent people when you had the chance, rather them kill those bastard. Siegfried was a reall Man of virtue, and I know for sure. That the leftiod cuck would smear shit on his character and ruin him for being a "toxic masculine" character

Never played the first one, started with Assassins of Kings. I'd like them to change very little so I can experience it as it was meant to be. 🤷‍♂️

These changes to things to make them "For modern audiences" are not for the wider audience at all. They are looking to cultivate and exploit an audience that won't question any pandering changes they make "Oh here's a crowd that's voicing for more inclusivity in shows. Let's make things more diverse to gain their attention and get them to buy our product." It's bloody ridiculous On a lighter note, ordered the Shad plushie. Another remake and/or product made for the non-existent modern audience. The card thing is basically what every game has these days. You interact with somebody, you get a BIOGRAPHY update, except here it's presented as a card. ESG is basically global totalitarianism. Look at Japan, last year they said they were all in on ESG, now people notice their schools are being flooded by migrants, Gayucation and Dragucation in schools, they are told they are oppressing black people, and the Western Feminist Philosophy is on the rise. MAN, who would have thought. And if YOU refuse THEY will refuse you from earning money.

I DREAD IT. I have LESS reason to buy that game now.

I honestly hope that they will make a GOOD remake of this game. Because The Witcher was a great game with some problems concerning weird mechanics. Otherwise, story was top notch, music was fantastic, characters were well written, overall atmosphere in the game is something that keeps me returning to this game time and time again. I just hope they wont destroy this. I'm also waiting for Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time remake. That stuff is a mystery to me. Watever Ubisoft is dealing with now, PoP remake was something a lot of gamers were hyped for. And now we still are left basically with nothing. CDP still has a better reputation than Ubi in my eyes, but I really hope The Witcher remake won't end the same way as PoP did.

Fun fact: majority, if not all developers who made The Witcher 1, are no longer with the company. CDPR is not the same company anymore, because its not comprised of the same people. I strongly doubt the current CDPR will be able to recreate the feel of the first game, and I doubt they will even try. It's not about being woke and changing things in the original game's story. It's about inability to make good, engaging games in the first place. Dont forget that CDPR took Cyberpunk the RPG, and made it into a looter-shooter.

The controls/mechanics of W1 are not the best, true, but we know what they are bloody talking about. And the real issue that I have with the game is in fact the story, the overall structure of it (how it copies arcs and personalities from the books), which they are stuck with.

I have ZERO trust in this remake. Just the thought makes me want to vomit.

This is just what they do to re-write history, to pretend "Look kids, the world has always been lame & gay!". If they were truly doing it out of love for the game it would a re-master, an audio-visual upgrade. But no, they're doing it out of HATE for the game and want to scrub out elements that don't conform to "current year". Recommend not to buy it. Buy the original and play that instead.

The problem here is that ESG crap is profitable. On the stage of getting investments, it makes money to the upper management. What happens next, they don't care, they've already got their cut and are about to move on to another studio.

Call me weird, but I actually liked the first Witcher's mechanics (mostly) - this was still somewhat more classic-RPG-like system than the arcade action game it became in two subsequent titles (still, I love the whole series for the writing and world-building, and the movie-like, cinematic narration).

CDprojekt is dead since they joined ESG rating a couple years ago and started making videos about woke stuff while hiring purple heads.

The remastered their trilogy already.. oh well luckily they aren't the ones making Edge runners..shame for CD, they had a good run but it seems they too need the SR treatment.

CDPR burned their last bridge for me with Cyberpunk 2077, it doesn't matter to me that they spent years fixing the state of the game. What bothers me is that they pulled a Ubisoft and released a game that was nothing like the product they were advertising prior to it's release.

Endymiontv checked and NOBODY who worked on the Arkham games is currently at Rocksteady. None of them worked on the Suicide Squad. At this point, the company is Rocksteady in name only.

Well of course. The show failed and everyone went back to the games so now they have to change the games to make it like the show. When people drop the “remade” games and go back to the novels they will come after the novels next. There is no escaping these people and their desire to make you believe in what they want.

The Witcher 3 is the number 1 on my top 10 favorite games of all time. But when I Heard that CD Projekt red wanted to adapt the Game just for that shitty Netflix tv show has sense. That make my blood boil.

So, they want to remake a game to cater to non-gamers that won't buy the game. A winning strategy.
