Yeah with the singers voice gone the whole band is totally different even if the rest of the band is the same. The best part of the band is the texture of his voice imo and he’s totally lost it

This entire album. Not one bad thing about it. Been listening to it since the day it was released. Still the best album they ever did in my opinion. The end got you because on the album the transition to the next song is seamless.

The original 5 is my wheelhouse, Loved little Pete Willis, that sound! They were a straight up guitar rock band out of England, somewhere they started worrying bout chics showing up ( or lack there of) to their shows, i personally stopped listening after High & Dry, no disrespect to Phil Collens, Vivian Campbell, (saw Vivian in his first job anyway. When you listen to Bringin' On The Heartbreak for years on record, tape or CD and expect "Switch 625" to come next, it's always a disappointment when you hear it on the radio and it gets cut off.

Def Leppard has some of the best ballads in the business. "Love Bites", "Two Steps Behind", "Miss you in a heartbeat" and many others. As a band, they perfected the juxtaposition of having hard rocking anthems and beautiful ballads.

I'm pretty sure when Def Leppard started, there was nobody in the band that was older than 16yrs. The early years of Def Leppard are the harder rock version. High and Dry is one of their good ones.

They were 16 when the original band started rehearsing in 1977... tho they played their first gig in 1978. It was Joe Elliott (vocals), Rick Savage (bass), Pete Willis & Steve Clark (guitars) & Tony Kenning (drums) ... Kenning quit in '78 before their demo was recorded w/ drummer Frank Noon. Rick Allen (drums) was 15 when he joined in 1979 - his parents had to sign the record contract w/ him cos he was underage...😂

Too bad nobody ever reacts to the next song after this called "Switch 625", which is like a natural instrumental outro to this song. It rocks, and in my opinion, the 2 songs should always be played together.

Well… that’s what the band thinks. Joe gets a vocal break, so may be the reason, but always played back to back on tour.

On Through the Night (1980) and High and Dry (1981) were primers for what was to come in 1983. This was their first real big hit song. Then came Pyromania in 1983, one of the best hard rock albums of all time.

The "interesting ending" was the beginning of 'Switch 625' that immediately follows Heartbreak, which is an excellent instrumental in itself.

I think this is their best song. period. That sound in the ending is the beginning of the next song on the album, it's a full instrumental called switch 625. You should check it out, it's kick ass. Infact the entire the entire album is kick ass. The album is called high n dry

When they recorded the On Through the Night album the drummer was only 15 years old, I still remember high school going to their first concert promoting album on through the night and the big hit was( Rock Brigade) Damn you guys got to do Rock Brigade🙏🙏🙏🙏

I grew up with Def Leopard and I've loved them since the beginning. But what really gets my respect is that they kept and worked with their drummer, who was young and dumb at the time and got into an accident and lost one of his arms. How many big time bands have an one armed drummer? Great Respect!!!

I'm going to post this again. In 1980 I went to the Georgia Jam at Road Atlanta. Def Leppard was the opening band and they were all teenagers. Talk about a n awesome group, not long after their first album came out. The other bands that day were Scorpion, Pat Travers Band, Molly Hatchet,Ted Nugent, good thing it was outdoors for they were all loud, very loud, Power Rock man , 😃🥃🤪 🎸📢😵. Rock and Roll I was twenty one then and that's one day I can never forget. It was July fourth and the temperature was 105 degrees very hot 🥵, but never regretted it. The cost was $12.00, that seems like a lot back then , just a drop in a bucket now . Keep on rocking brothers and sisters ✌️ and 🤘 Brother Gary

Those transitions were pretty standard for an 80's power ballad. That cool bass that was playing at the end was the lead-in to the next song on the album.

High-N-Dry is by far their best album. I saw them open up for Ozzy w/Randy Rhoads in Sep. '81 on their H-N-D tour. 🤘 EDIT: I think no member of DL was older than 20 when H-N-D was recorded.

The Pete Willis era of Def Leppard is arguably one of their best. Even the album Pyromania, which is the album after this, was packed with Willis’ songs after his firing. Kind of like how Metallica kept using Mustaine’s songs post-exit. Willis wrote some awesome material for Def Leppard that has yet to be recaptured with any lineup to follow. …That out of the way, I’m still a fan of the current lineup. But the vibe definitely changed.

Older Def Leppard is definitely better. Their later stuff was way overproduced. “Foolin’” and “Photograph” are really good IMO.

Pyromania is the bridge between early Leppard and the overproduced albums to come. As much as I hate to say it, keeping Rick Allen after his accident changed their sound. He was a Keith Moon all over the place kind of drummer and after the accident was stuck with performing basic rhythms.

@@dan2007kohn Interesting take. I wonder if Rick Allen's accident could have actually pushed the band into more studio production on their albums to make up for his limitations on the drums. Fun fact: Pyromania was the first album (a tape cassette) I purchased with my own money...against my parents' wishes.

@@BrianCole1 IMO the style of the drums parts on the Hysteria album are all variations on the the drums parts in Rock of Ages. There’s nothing wrong with those parts, I just think he was a more interesting drummer on High and Dry!! His accident was definitely a tragedy for him.

Was a teenager and just suffered my first heartbreak and this song came on the radio, the first Def Leppard song I ever heard and still my favorite from them. This song meant a lot to me.

Def Leppard in 1981, when they had both original guitarists and the drummer had two arms. On the album this song fades into a killer instrumental track called Switch 625. This album also has one of their most underrated songs, Let It Go.

That wasn't the ending Lex. That was the beginning of "Switch Six Twenty-five", an instrumental. The two songs were always played in tandem on the radio back in the day.

You guys really ought to check out the whole High"N"Dry Album... Absolutely a Masterpiece!! These guys have been together since they were teenagers, and also,When their Drummer(Rick Allen),had a terrible automobile accident which resulted in the worst possible outcome .. They,as a Brotherhood elected to wait for their Brother to learn how to play Drums again in his own time ... They Still Kick Ass Live,I've seen them a few times and have Never been Disappointed!!

one thing i love about ‘80’s music is the variety of transitions within a song, definitely makes the song entertaining until the end

I remember thier first U.S. tour in 1980. They opened up for Black Sabbath. It was such a good for rock. You guys rock!

Try "wasted" or "hello America" from def leppard. Two of my favourites from them. 👍

The ending is actually the beginning of the next song. You guys really need to listen to the song that follows, Switch 625. One of my favorite rock instrumentals.

Saw them for the 1st time in 1981. They opened for Ozzy and the great Randy Rhoads in Tampa. Best concert I've ever been to. Favorite album because it was just raw
