"Unmarried American adults outnumber their married counterparts for the first time since the federal government began tracking that data in 1976, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.
"There were 124.6 million single Americans in August - accounting for 50.2 percent of the 16-and-over US population, the BLS data showed.
"Eric Klinenberg, an NYU sociology professor who tracks marriage trends, predicts the unmarrieds will probably be edging their married peers by this small margin for the foreseeable future." *
In this clip, The Young Turks' Cenk Uygur ( / cenkuygur ) and Ana Kasparian ( / anakasparian ) break down the story.
* For more on this story, read the NY Post article here: nypost.com/2014/09/09/single-a...

+Vad M. Either will you. Seriously what is the point of being married. I can have my own place and my own money. We don't need some guy holding on to all the money and making all of the demands. Shit I can just enjoy my life travel the world (Which I do) and I can be free. So we won't miss you either, kay? In fact I really do think that more people just need to stay single and not worry about other people. Marriage is a sham.

Halfcentaur Regarding your first paragraph: Your family's situation isn't the norm. And we both know it. So bringing it up when we are talking about the norm is a moot point and it's also a deflection. Hell, most of the females in my family are self made, but I'm not foolish enough to suggest that they are the norm. Regarding your second paragraph: I didn't say or implied that this was inherently a female mentality, but it certainly is more prominent in female's than males. It's called hypergamy. Men generally are valued by their ability to provide (human-doings), while women are generally valued for being female (human-beings). *"We're told our whole lives to disregard everything else, as long as it is a benefit for you."* Who's "we?" I don't know what you were told, but I was told different. Regarding your third paragraph: This certainly is a gender issue. Marriage and culture are simply tools used for the enabling of gynocentrism and hypergamy. Marriage was used to combine wealth and culture is formed around human nature. I personally couldn't care less what a stranger online thinks of me. But I don't have any qualms correcting your assumptions of me. I'm not some old conservative. I'm a independent. Both the left and the right are wrong and correct. In other words, there are some things I agree with the right on, and there are some things I agree with the left on. But there are also principals I disagree with them on.

Its marriage we are discussing. Commitment. -,- With that said I think we need to start changing society and bring back chivalry and stop having the media / music dictate how we live. So much booty this and fugging that is not a good mentality if you wanna be with one woman you love. Its just saying I can go around getting booty without repercussions.

Some couples have been together for decades and have kids and are still not married. I don't blame them. 1. Govt. involvement. 2. Expensive ass weddings. 3. Divorce. 4. Child custody problems are all reason to NEVER tie the knot. And as far as us single dudes. Marrying a woman today just looks too fucking dangerous. In East Asia, marriage = lifelong mandatory, unconditional subservience & adulation to your in-laws who, unlike your own parents, haven't done shit to raise you and care for you, yet somehow feel entitled to acts of filial piety from you. Fuck that! I'd much rather spend my $ and energy to take care of my own parents and family members. Outsiders have ZERO rights to authorize me. Biology is neutral on monogamy I'm sorry to burst your bubble Cenk. An argument can be equally made that monogamy is ingrained in our species because of the intense resources needed for a couple to keep a baby though pregnancy, labor and subsequently raising it to full development (or at least near independence) as it can be made against it for increasing the potential gene pool of any species. Basically there's pros and cons for both ideas in nature, however I think we can both agree that for a human child, a stable home can be seen as the most positive for him/her. Which gets me to another point, Human beings are much less driven by instinct and "nature" (I use this term colloquially) than any other animal on Earth. Basically, our "base" instincts mean much less to us than lets say a spider or wolf. So even if it can be proven as thoroughly as possible that instinctively we're driven much harder to be polyamorous than monogamous or vice versa, it's not like that would seal the deal on either one. So stop stating in such a matter of fact way that one is more "natural" than the other when it comes to humans.

Wrongo bongo, I am a biologist. Everything strongly suggests we were not meant to be monogamous. Testicle to body size ratio, penis to body size ratio, sexual dimorphism; all of these things when placed on a graph with other primates lands us squarly in the non-monogamous grouping. Furthermore your argument for the cost of resources is a very poor one. Just as many primates and hunter gatherer societies around the globe, children were raised by the tribes where support was given by the members of that tribe, not just one man. They wouldn't even know who the father was, as they evolved to fuck around a lot, and they surely did. You see, nature evolves in the direction it was selected, not arbitrarily. Big dicks, big balls, and little sexual dimorphism is no coincidence.

No, I could care less about ad hominem attacks or arguments from authority. I would like to see a scientifically supported argument as to why one should believe that humans are evolved to be monogamous. I would also like to see why the arguments I listed are not evidence to the contrary.

Women control the 'sex' rates, but men control the 'marriage' rates. If women don't find the men to be attractive enough, or the men's income to be attractive enough, then then the women say "no, no, you're not getting any sex from me." But when the economy gets tough like it is now, and men have an increasingly hard time getting a job, they see that they are not getting any sex, AND they see how if they do get married their will be destroyed in divorce courts, possibly going to jail because they might lose their jobs and then the won't be able to pay the amounts to their ex that the courts orders. So these wise men see that getting married is a FAST TRACK STRAIGHT TO JAIL, so no wonder they don' want to get married. THAT is the main reason why marriage rates are falling, its because men don't wan to go to prison. For men; MARRIAGE IS FINANCIAL SUICIDE these days. So no when you say 'marriage rates are falling', it is more like the 'financial suicide rates are falling.'

Marrying is like a tradition where a guy calls dibs on a girl before another guy beats him to it. Less people will want to commit to a marriage when they think there's so many possible partners available for them. But I personally think when there's children involved, the parents should be together, stable, and married in order to better raise the kids.
@rskubar
@rskubar 9 жыл бұрын
I dont know... One parent can be just as good as 2 in a lot of cases - it only doesnt work if the single parent doesnt have enough money, and is forced to work a lot.
@banner1724
@banner1724 9 жыл бұрын
***** I highly admire single parents who raise their kids better than most married couples. The way society is now, it's better for the kids to have two parents who live together. How many single parents do you know who can adequately provide food, shelter, clothing, transportation, spend time with their kids, parent them, and teach them? If you split these aspects of raising children in a family with two parents, these things become more manageable. It takes two people to make a baby, both parents need to take responsibility, otherwise they need to abort the baby as soon as possible. Anyway, the video wants to say that there are families out there with both biological parents living together and aren't getting married, because getting married is too much of a process to do. I don't know if the statistics say there are a large population of these cases, but my judgement won't allow me to believe that. It could be that, for a bunch of reasons, men and women aren't settling down with a partner as much. Regardless, I don't think people should have kids at a young age. Life expectancy is high and there's no shortage of human population, people can wait until they're more prepared for kids.
@rskubar
@rskubar 9 жыл бұрын
***** Well, maybe it is hard to provide sufficient money for the kids if it is a single parent in some countries(mainly in America), but in most other countries, the government helps you out a lot. Everything you have mentioned is not a problem: we already have split teaching from the parents (and since feeding children is mainly done at schools now, this is also not a problem). I am sure you would also agree that raising children where there are 3 parents, is better than 2, (and this is what we have essencially done through schools). Plus lets also add that a single parent can always hire someone for extra help, or even ask family for help. A single parent with a good job, in a good country, will have a harder life, but they will be able to raise a child just as good (if not better) than 2 parents. So all this brings me to the original point: If a single parent has enough money, they can raise the child *better* than 2 parents could. It all comes down to money - the more money a person has, the better chances the child has.
@Jayremy89
@Jayremy89 9 жыл бұрын
***** And they really shouldn't. It's at the expense of people who chose not to have kids that they have to pay more for those who do. It's simply immoral. Give the child the time and funds they need to end up assuredly as mentally "alright" adults, not prison bound or anything bad. Two parents OR more I think is good. One person raising a child is vastly insufficient, even two parents need help often times. I think people need to consider children as the most important decision in their lives, not just something to think about after pregnancy as if a decision must be made that week. They must think and plan through the next 2 decades at least- it's honestly not hard to do in a primitive manner. If you can't see yourself stably supporting children, don't have them and not with a remotely sketchy person. It's also crappy for single parents to be playing around with other guys or women in the meantime of raising a child. Way to fuck with a child's head. Even many "good guys" don't want to be the fall back choice who gets stuck with children, that's a shot to ones pride unless they hate their own genes.

Jeremy K So you think people shouldnt be taking money from the government as others who dont have kids have to pay them? Get used to it. I do not drive a car, yet my taxes still go to making roads and freeways. I do not smoke - and those who do, are using my tax money. I am an atheist, yet churches are exampt from taxes... One day I will be old, and I will be needing taxpayers to be giving me money. I agree that if someone cannot support a child, that they should really consider how their lives will turn out if they have it - not only will their lives be ruined, but also often it will ruin their childs life. But that doesnt mean they shouldnt have kids: what about if a child is 2 years old, and the parents decide to seperate? Should we take the child away, and put it in a family with 2 parents? (just an extreme example). Parents get divorced, they remarry, even multiple times while the child is growing up - that would also be "fuccking with a child's head" would it not? Or maybe would it simply be showing the child that life has complications, and not everything is a perfect disney story? Everything you have mentioned can (and does) happen just as often (if not more) to children who are born within 2 parent homes. -> A parent focusing on her/himself is not confusing the child - if it is, then child needs to learn that it is not the center of the universe.

Well it's not worth getting married in the USA any more. The American dream is gone from this country. When you have to separate fro them, the courts give the woman everything and force the man to live in a card board house on the streets. The system let the women get away with murder and to use it to hurt the man. So men are saying the hell with this, I will not deal with such bull shit any longer. Some just don't marry at all or some just leave the USA and married a woman from another country. Then just live in that country. From what my my dad and my friends had to go through dealing with these women. I said to myself I will never deal with this crap. So to all of the women in the USA, you can have the country. It's all yours. Seeya

Marriage is the stupid idea that you should legally bind yourself to someone because you 'love' them, and then the woman should splurt out kids, clean and cook and that is her life and if she does anything other than that she's a terrible person who should be shunned from her community - and the poor man who has to work 60 hours a week on a job (or three) that he HATES just to 'support' his family and if his paycheck is smaller than, say $40k p/annum he's worthless too. I'm not surprised. Marriage benefits no one, and why do you care if there's a decline in marriage?

Murphy Brown: The issue was NOT her having a kid outside of marriage but having a kid without a FATHER. Children deserve fathers. In the third season of "Murphy Brown," Murphy became pregnant after a one-night stand with her ex-husband. The point was that even an educated, well-off famous person could make a mistake. Murphy's dilemma was clear: have the baby or have an abortion. In a particularly sensitive episode, Murphy agonized over her decision. So did the father. *But in the end, he made it clear that his mission as a globe-hopping environmental activist trumped fatherhood. Murphy was on her own. * On May 18, 1992, Murphy Brown gave birth to a baby boy, and the millions of Americans who watched made it the No. 1-rated sitcom episode of the week. A day later, Quayle was making a campaign speech at the Commonwealth Club of San Francisco. He was well on his way toward making an important statement about the serious responsibility of childbearing and its impact on society when suddenly, he took a hard right turn and squared off against his longtime fictional nemesis by saying that Murphy was "mocking the importance of fathers by bearing a child alone and calling it 'just another lifestyle choice.' "

I like Cenk's suggestion that marriage and divorce laws may be anachronistic. That is one of the pillars of the men's rights movement. Open discussion about these kinds of issues could benefit everybody. I'm glad that Cenk mentioned that occasionally a successful woman ends up on the wrong end of a divorce decree. Sometimes it is easier to see the injustice when the genders are reversed.

I don't think this is just about people rejecting the concept of marriage. More and more men--DECENT men--are becoming INVOLUNTARILY single. I don't know if it's the attention women are getting from social networking sites and online dating or what, but it just seems like every women now feels they deserve only the best-looking, richest men and would rather die alone than settle for less. I'm 30 years old. I would LOVE to have a wife and kids by now, but despite being a responsible guy with a stable career, I can't get so much as a single date, let alone find a woman who wants to spend the rest of her life with me. I've stopped wasting my time hoping for it.

Don't give up, I'm sure they're is a lady out there for you. You just aren't looking hard enough. Some women, believe it or not, do not want a Prince Charming, handsome and living in a castle. Some would rather have the Average Joe or as ugly as Quasimodo that was loving and gentle than a guy who's looks make him arrogant. If he lived in a shabby apartment, she wouldn't be fazed, and help him find a better place for a possible they (she, he, and maybe even, kids). I'm sure those women possibly, in the back of their minds, want a guy who can take care of them (I'm sure every girl thinks that at least once in her life). But they also don't want to be a burden. There are women who want a relationship where it is an equal thing, at least financially. My point: There are many women who want a Pauper, not a Prince. You just need to keep looking. PS: I'm kind of in the same boat you are, in the sense that I can't get a mate. A lot of men I know have been brainwashed to only care about looks. They almost always go for women who have been brainwashed into wearing make-up that makes them look like clowns, wearing clothes that are ridiculously provocative, and act like the world revolves around them. As a result of that, I've never been with a guy at all. So are a lot of women out there, whether they are the same age, older or younger than me.

***** Oh please. Don't tell me that "don't give up crap". It's like a Christian saying I'll pray for you". IT doesn't change anything, surely doesn't change my mindset. I'm 25, I'm not in a stable career yet, I'm able to live on my own currently but am basically about a month or less away from getting a new job that pays triple than I get now so... yeah. I've tried that online dating. All the most similar/compatible women don't bother to reply. I won't be with religious nuts, obese/unhealthy women, drug users/abusers, constant "partiers", those who act like they need to go hiking or on a trip every day, long-distance penpals, recently divorced, mommies of children or those hyper-matieralistic. That narrows much done to like a remaining 10-20% of which are pretty much unapproachable. It's evident how shallow they are there. They want tall guys 5'11+, stable jobs (or just money), says the right words like some pick up artist in a first message, up to interesting stuff/skills, "intelligent", very active guys, and whatever else they personally physically are attracted too (they list). Of course though they all get statistically 5 times the messages than men get, which is awkward and unsettling. Sadly there is a group of sycophant guys and pick up artists who play women and they clearly let that shit get to their head as if sincere or something. And to add to that I'm just looking for any women I can consider a good or close friend, nothing serious. It seems I missed that opportunity early college or high school to develop strong social bonds with people, so those are things i'll never have. Literally nobody to share younger year memories with so... yeah. It's a pain in the ass trying to meet new people these days. Apparently I learned "hook up" means purely sex or a "one night stand", it used to mean "getting together" or meeting, really bothers me because there isn't a good replacement phrase to use. But apparently women online worry much about some dude having sex and bolting out the door or some rapist/serial killer- both are a bit paranoid, only the lazy or very dumb/ignorant/naive I think can be fooled by those idiots.

***** Women tend to have a choice in the matter or think they have more of a choice than they should pretend to have in the men they pick. It's like for me, I don't want to wait until I'm in my thirties to have a decent relationship for once- by then it's to late. I'm obviously not going to be looking right, looking for 20-25 yr olds then... mind you. Waiting around is the burden and no decent guy wants to wait until they and their eventual partner is already old as hell to finally hook up and start a life when they haven't had a chance to build younger years at all together. Whether or not women "want" those pauper types, they *choose otherwise*. No guy has to be remotely a prince, there is just plenty of other guys looking for a similar woman. Not all guys have the same tastes in looks but like >80% want a relatively low body fat women who has a clean/smooth look, make-up or not, nothing extreme or too difficult either. A lot of dudes don't even care about the make up though honestly. A fairly good study showed it was more like 40-50% merely had some preference. Guys tend to pick from a pool of desired women that is really small. Women tend to have and make their choices, others may just get the rodeo ride around than anything long term and fruitful.

Jeremy K I hear what your saying, and you do have a point. People can be picky when it comes to looking for a mate. I'm just saying that just because you didn't have a relationship as a youth, doesn't mean you should give up. I was a social outcast as a youth, so I've never been with a guy. But, I haven't given up hope in finding a mate. If your only 25, then you do still have a chance. A lot of people I know who were also not-so popular in school and college find their mates in their late 20's and early 30's. If your only looking for a close friend or whatever, that's up to you buddy.

I agree, getting divorced is a main turn off for getting married, it's already happened twice in my extended family where the woman gets more than the man, and as a man, I don't want the risk. That's how we lost most of the family fortune, my grandfather married a gold digger, the very night they got married the woman divorced him, and law at the time stated that women took all the money. Luckily he remarried and continued the family, but, if I don't get married, this is a major reason.

Since when did marriage require a wedding? Getting married is cheap. Home buying/property buying is an investment that not only married couples pursue. You won't necessarily get rich but it helps you long term esp. when you are older. If you plan to marry someone perhaps you should already know their spending habits. The problem is people love weddings and that honeymoon effect but they don't want to put the real effort in the marriage.

I'd have to say a large part of it is the time people spend working. in america, we spend 60-70 hours a week working, slaving for the corporate state that has convinced us we need every new thing in the world just to be happy. who the hell has time for relationships when you work like a dog for the vast majority of your waking life? And then those that do find time to develop a relationship often drift apart due to work schedules dominating one of the persons life. this leads to divorce, which is financially disastrous usually for the one that works the most (as they earn the most money and have the most to lose). all in all, people dont have time for it, and even if they did, it oftentimes isn't worth it.

Please explain to me what the point of marriage is. If you already love the woman/other person, why do I need to put a ring on her finger? Does it suddenly change anything? Are more feelings suddenly generated for having a piece of gold and a diamond on a finger? How? You already love the person. That is, the highest emotional feeling for a individual. Does it suddenly increase the security of the relationship? Nope. But marriage is a sacred bond! Don't make me laugh, get out of here with that shit. Both men and women cheat on each other all the time. It suddenly doesn't magically bind you to the other person. All it is, in short, is a piece of paper saying you can get insurance. All it really does it cause a huge legal issue once you both don't want to be with each other. So, why would I want to get married? If something bad happens, even if through no fault of my own, and I get a divorce, I'm going to lose EVERYTHING in court to the bitch...Everything I've worked hard for, gone. It's honestly better to stay single with a fuck buddy or just a girlfriend. According to a study published in the American Law and Economics Review, women have filed slightly more than two-thirds of divorce cases in the United States. I've been with my GF for 2 & 1/2 years. She's aware of me not wanting to be married. She wants kids. I want kid.s And we're still going to have them. You don't need to have a TITLE to have a FAMILY. Her parents are pissed as hell because they're Christians. But both of us don't care what they think. We're dating each other, not our parents.

There are reasons why people don't want to get married. It is because of laws surrounding divorce. I would never want to take on someone else's debt. I wouldn't want half of my possessions given to someone who didn't earn that money in case I got divorced. There is nothing wrong with being single. I love living on my own. Perhaps marriage could be a contract that lasted a limited period of time and after that time, if the two people still loved each other they could renew the contract or be free to walk away without a messy divorce.

TYT always dances around the truth of this subject because they have feminist ideologies. MEN are the primary group that are refusing marriage because the courts have been punishing them for DECADES in divorce court. Marriage is now associated with financial and emotional ruin for a lot of men that see what happens in divorce court. Marriage for men is wealth redistribution. Women however still want to get married at a MUCH higher rate than men today because on average it is much lower risk and higher reward for them. The government has essentially conditioned men against marriage.

The comment section needs educated on the difference between feminism and misandry. As for the marriage situation, I think it's both men and women realizing that marriage is not only expensive, but it seems to ruin people's relationships. We've watched generations before us "stay together for the kids" and I feel like we are finally wising up to the fact that marriage is not necessary for a happy or healthy relationship. Furthermore, I think as a tech-based era with constant stimulation and instant gratifications, most people are too scared to commit to something as big as marriage. (Though, in my opinion, that's not a bad thing at all.)

***** I never said anything about any of the extreme things you are alluding to, but thank you for your input. I'm glad to see there are people who claim to know the difference, and yet talk about all the things that a misandry-driven woman would do. One topic does not "ruin" anyone's life. Only those who take other people's opinions too seriously deal with that problem. I think I'm done responding to this one. I'll be over here talking to people (Men and women both) that want equal rights for all human beings.

Most women of this generation want men to take care of them. Women in this generation (not all) are taught to marry for security first. I ain't saying she's a gold digger, but she ain't messing with a broke, broke, broke. When she leaves your A55 she goin leave with half. Marry a women who will evenly share financial responsibility with you, not the helpless princess. Marriages are down because women still want to be taken care of, and there are not very many men who can afford it in this economy.

I was engaged when I was 19. I come from a very rural community where it was expected of both men and women to get married and start pooping out babies right out of high school, and honestly I didn't know any better. Luckily we had a long engagement and came to our senses before reaching the altar, we broke up, and I understand that now, almost ten years later, he's happily married with a family and all that. If he got hitched that young, he wouldn't have the financial stability he does now, which is good since he's a father and can live comfortably rather than paycheck to paycheck. People are waiting longer, they're focusing more on building a stable foundation, and they're living their lives and figuring themselves out before making that incredibly adult decision. It's a good thing.

A lot of it has to do with the fact people live and sleep together these days without being married. So they have the chance to get to know each other before they are in this binding contract. People are less likely to tolerate each other and more likely to move on when things inevitably go downhill.

"The other person takes half" - Cenk, why don't you just say it - the woman takes half. How often do we hear about alimony where the guy is suing the woman? Extremely rarely. I'd like to think that men are wising up to this massive injustice - the legalised theft of half of their life's assets. And if women are deciding that the institution of marriage is not for them, I'm fine with that too.

+James S You're acting like she doesn't have any stuff. The main reason there are 50/50 laws is because you pool your belongings when you get married so you end up with about the same amount (if not more than) what you started with.

Lena Elan Umm, no. I have two uncles that were fucked over by marriage. First one lost his house and car (that he owned before he met his wife), and still has to pay child support despite her remarrying. Second one was ~35 when he married his 20-year-old wife. He was a CTO and she was a student. He paid her tuition for college and bought a million-dollar house. 5 years later, she wanted a divorce and he had to sell everything and give half to her. Of course, he didn't learn his lesson and got remarried, but luckily she's a pharmacist this time (and they're still married today).

While i agree that a person maturity play some part on people wanting to settling down and get married, but let's keep it real, anyone would be angry if they lose half of their income because of the excitement before marriage when they think they found their mr or mrs right and thinking og the "happily ever after" scenario. I dont condone and i dont condemn marriage but you got to have prenup, thats all

Interesting topic TYT. Like you guys say, couples are still together and having kids but are not getting married, this causes the system to record more and more single mothers. I live in the UK and a married male with 4 children. We struggle with the bills ect... but make it work out. I know plenty of families that are together with kids but tell the government they are separated! These couples get all their bills paid for including rent, council tax, extra benefits ect.... and this pisses me right off. Its down to the government that lets this happen. If benefits were not available the amount of single mothers would be less than 25% than it is now.

Very Good Point; The U.S did this to Blacks during the 60's and 70's when they were (and still are) blocked out of private sector jobs. The state (GOV) made the rule "Get the Man out of the House or starve!" which was an disaster. Marriage do help lower income couples finanically but it seems to screw over people who are more affluent and it should not be this way. Many rich white woman talk a lot of junk about "I don't need a man" Of Course Not when the average middle class white woman make over $80,000 which enough to raise a child on their own; but a woman who makes $30,000 say and that they are up shit's creek fininically. Traditionally, people got married to keep money and assets in the family and/or maintain "royal bloodlines" in monarchy situations. Now, with the average person making $7.25-$20 dollars an hour, what is the pont of getting married?
