What also upsets me is that people make it seem like the darker a black woman's skin is the uglier she is.

NO only YOU think that. Who are these "people" you are talking about. Has it occurred to you that not everyone is attracted to black people? (and vice versa) I am attracted to the beauty of the person and in fact, all things being equal, I prefer darker skin (I am Dominican BTW) so your being "upset" exists only in your mind. And why in the hell do you care (get upset) at people that think this way?

Melvin Pérez You're wrong. Colorism does not "only exist in her mind." Can I suggest something? How about employing some empathy? Not that she or any other black woman needs you or anyone else for that matter to validate their experiences, but since you feel the need to have an opinion on something you clearly have no understanding of why not try to be a little more open minded and educated on the matter before you start insisting someone's experiences are only a product of their imagination.
@christophersabueso

Let's break this down: Definition of Colorism:" Prejudice or discrimination against individuals with a dark skin tone, typically among people of the same ethnic or racial group." Therefore, "employing some empathy" does NOTHING in making an objective analysis of this video. If she did not want her thoughts open to scrutiny, she would not have publised them in an open forum! So, going back to the DEFINITION, colorism does in FACT reside solely in the mind albeit that some people may act on said thoughts but even then, it is only 'harmful' if you already have low self esteem or self loathing due to your skin color. Lastly, for you to assume that I have no clear understanding of the subject implies that you have an intimate knowledge of my life, experiences and education (and we all know you do not). The only logical conclusion is that you tried to put that in there as an attempt to subjugate MY opinions and thoughts. So, I ask you to give an 'educated' thought on the matter instead of bashing those of us who have a real, opinion based on facts.

Melvin Pérez Your logic is skewed. And you've contradicted yourself several times. The facts are colorism is damaging, psychologicaly, emotionally.... The effect of colorism can completely alter someone's sense of self and quality of life. It is embedded in cultures throughout the world and significantly impacts the lives of many individuals. To suggest that it is all in someone's mind or that it is only self-inflicted is a warped perspective concerning the subject. You're missing the mark and are not seeing the bigger picture.

I agree with this video, these things ARE being said constantly. However, they are also being said by black women themselves to other black women.... all the time. I've dealt with this when I went to an all black high school and because I didn't "look" or "act" black, it was always questioned and it got so annoying. This is the problem, you can't take a compliment. Intention is everything and it's not said to insult you. You talk about recognising different beauty standards yet get pissed when someone points them out. Can't win.

When people literally say "you're pretty for a black girl," the "for a black girl" part is a clear implication of this idea that black girls are generally not considered pretty. Why do they have to say the "for a black girl" part? That's not a compliment.

Nicole Robinson No, that's what YOU take from that statement, what it means is - you are pretty for a black girl. I believe that is a compliment, not a racist statement. Black women talk about different beauty standard sall the time and how they are pissed off being compared to the Western ideal, so that statement is clear in it's intent to not confuse the two.

Unfortunatly this happens because white people are not exsposed to blackness. Entertainment/media/magazines have always glorified white features over well, everyone. Its pretty pathetic. I have a half white daughter. I constantly tell her how beautiful her natural curls are, and I hardly allow her to watch shows if there are not enough races other than whites in it, yup I said it. My daughter should grow up and see the world as it truly is, full of beautiful people. Different colors, shapes, and sizes. We are ALL magnificent! It is the fault of producers, editors, and casting agents shame. Thank you Teen V for doing your part :)

I love wearing my hair natural in twist braids or out in a curly afro...so one day a not so good friend anymore told me that I should put weave in my hair, now she tells me this everyday so I got tired of it and stood for myself/hair "stop I like my hair, just cause you hate your on hair and wear weave with it dosent mean I have to...I'm sick of hearing them words out your mouth don't be hating because I have a lot more hair on my head than you do". Their was also this boy who told me I would look better with straight hair "stop right their don't tell me what looks better on me as you haven't seen me with straight hair yet so don't say that or anything close to that to me again please and thank you" the boy surprisingly respected that. A girl once told me that I'm pretty for a black girl I just reply with "your pretty for a white girl" she was very clueless and just giggle agreeing with me I barely talk to her now.

When people say "You talk well for a black person," they're not implying that black people are stupid. They're demeaning the cultural significance and the competence of Ebonics. It's a dialect of English just like any other, with its own grammar rules and what not. When they say "You talk well for a black person," they're saying that 1) they're used to hearing black people speaking Ebonics, and 2) that White English is the better dialect of English ("you talk well").

When people say "You talk well for a black person," they're not implying that black people are stupid. They're basically saying that Ebonics (Black English) isn't proper English just because it's not White English. Which is still racist. When they say "You talk well for a black person," they're saying that 1) they're used to hearing black people speaking Ebonics, and 2) that White English is better than Ebonics

I am a blonde haired blue eyes woman and I think that the world would be soooooo boring if everyone looked just like me. It seems to be equated as the "classic beauty standard" and it can get kind of annoying and irritating to be treated like "old fashioned beauty" or something, like a poodle or a cute vintage thing. I think HELLO black women and every other race color combinations have ALWAYS been beautiful, and it is not just some recent thing that other races of women are beautiful. I am not "quaint" for being blonde haired blue eyed woman. I know that every skin hair color and texture combination is beautiful. I really appreciate that uniqueness. Every race of woman is just as beautiful as me. Beauty comes in every color that humans come in. It is about having clear skin, facial symmetry, being overall healthy and having bright eyes, good posture and a nice smile that really make a person beautiful. I have met a lot of frumpy raggy haggy fat looking blue eyed blonde women, and a lot of gorgeous sexy healthy blue eyed blonde women. It is about health not color, bottom line. I LOVE BLACK BEAUTY. I think that nappy hair is amazing and gorgeous and I do want to touch it, but not a stranger, and not like you are a dog or something, I am just attracted to it because black hair is just sooooooooooo amazing and I love it. I just want to stick my whole face in some lady's afro someday and breath in. LOL (with permission of course and not a stranger) My blonde hair does it's normal predictable thing, and I am actually PISSED OFF at the beauty industry for sensationalizing my hair color, because it makes people hate it and want to rebel against it and get bored of it, to the point where I feel like a poodle, like was popular in the 1950s, but today just kindof quaint.

You fail to even realise that you are the extreme minority in this world and your blonde hair and blue eyes is what is exotic. The vast majority of this world is brown and black.The 'beauty industry' was built/is run by white poeple so it will of course primarily focus on white standards of beauty.

When someone tells you "for a black girl", you know you're talking to someone who seriously needs to reevaluate everything they think they know. Signed: Double national white guy, father of two girls from a "mixed race" woman (BTW, "mixed race" makes about as much sense as saying the color of my skin is like that of a white sheet of paper)

I totally agree. I don't unterstand why people differ between black and white. Nobody should discriminated for their skin colour. Especially bc in the last year's (in my Instagram feed) the discrimination changed. White girl get insult bc they are "so white" , "acting so white". I mean whut?! Everyone is acting like they is. It's so unimportant if the person is black, white, mixed or whatever!

Juibelly Yes, and I wish that was truely how the world works, but WAKE UP CALL, it's not. Everyday, someone of color is being degraded, offended, or attacked for their race, culture, and/or religion. You are talking about one time where you've seen the tables turned, but if colored people are going through that on a daily basis, how do you think they'd act, sit back and not retaliate. It's in our human nature to protect ourselves. I love your passion though, but before we can make statements like that, we need to know the place the world is currently in.

And even though it hurts my feelings I do it and they're like "Wow! you're not that dark afterall" And they will sometimes compare their skin to mine and be like "Wow I look so pale compared to you!". They also make make jokes like "I don't wanna stay in the sun to long or i'll look like her!" (aka me). One of my friends also said something like "She (me) makes me look prettier thats why im her friend".My crush also called me a burnt pizza. This is why Im insecure. Thanks for reading my little rant.
