The Awkward Tourists

The Awkward Tourists

Күн бұрын

In this video, we continue exploring the United States Virgin Islands, waking up in St. John to rough oceans and bigger surf than we imagined.
After watching the surfers at Cinnamon Bay, we venture to the lesser-traveled east end of St. John. The beaches were calmer over on this end of the island, but we were soon hit with a rain storm that sent us packing.
Sometimes this just don't work out the way you want them to.....

Good thing that the gate was Oppen and not Closen at Oppenheimer Beach so you could get in! lol! 🤣 Sorry, a little immature humor after seeing the Oppen part of the word directly above the doorway! Weather and surf was bad, but even a bad day at the beach is better than a good day at work!

Great video- not typical showing what to do on a rainy day. Never saw waves like that on the N. shore but our boat Captain told us he has seen them. Thanks for the parking tip- never knew that. We usually just park at the STJ rental car lot after hours but having options is always good- especially if eating in town. High Tide is always a hit for quick, casual with a view. We also really like Morgan's Mango, Ocean 362 at Gallows Point and The Terrace.

Hey guys, I've got two words to say to you: SALT POND! Didn't you guys think to ask around about the beaches on the south shore? That's where everyone goes when the north shore acts up. Nice and calm. Oh well, maybe next time.
@GreginMD

Yep, unfortunately during high season, the northern swells are a common occurrence on St. John. But you did the right thing by going to Hansen Bay where the beach faces south. Definitely good to have the east end beaches in your arsenal for times like those!

Thats cool. Despite all the tourism there now, It still feels like a sleepy little island. Normally we wouldn't hitchhike, but it seems totally cool and safe to do it there

Too bad the weather didnt cooperate more for you guys, it's an amazing island and Cinnamon Bay is absolutely TEAMING with AN INSANE amount of sea creatures of all shapes and sizes --you can see them snorkeling way out to the extreme right -- large tarpon like 6 feet and huge bait balls - it's nuts --- ya'll should have checked it out --we snorkel all over the world and saw the best snorkeling on St. John at Cinnamon Bay, walk down to the rocks and snorkel to the right of the rocks --- it's deep but crazy great ...and in Cinnamon in genreal you will see HUGE bait balls but BE CAREFUL, don't get in the bait balls as the larger fish feed off of the fish in these balls!!! They will be beneath you and darting through

Ship us there now. Like...right...now. I would have zero problem if I got slapped by the high surf while sitting down watching surfers. But if there's electronics? Yeah, that's an issue. I also know plenty well when the better half is correct, Kevin. It's OK.

Is St. John safe for a female solo traveler?
@TheAwkwardTourists

I would say yes, just as long as you follow all common sense rules. I wouldn't probably be on the beach after dark or in the back alleys of Cruz Bay or anything

Yes, St John is a very safe island. Even as a female traveling alone you should be totally fine. I travel with my husband but I wouldn’t hesitate to go to St. John by myself. St. John is usually a pretty quiet island but it has been busy during COVID because most of the islands have been closed to outsider travel. So there are others on the beaches. In Cruz Bay you may run into so people with mental health issues as there aren’t a lot of mental health facilities available on the island. We just steer clear and have never had a problem..We’ve been to St. John every year for the past 7 or so years. We love it. Exercise normal precautions like not leaving anything in your vehicle ( we leave our doors unlocked and leave absolutely nothing in it- why make it tempting), not wandering around late at night, keeping your rental door locked when you go out, etc. Basically, the same stuff you do at home.
