I have two kids (4&5). Anytime we are in a store and they see something they impulsively want, we take pictures of the item, so they can revisit the pics later as a reminder for holidays or bday ideas...... THEY NEVER REMEMBER TO GO BACK AND LOOK AT THE PICS. It avoids a frustrated kid in the store and is a great talking point with them later to show them that after that moment in the store 99% of those items never even crossed their minds again.

Taking a picture when you see something you love is a great way to scratch that consumerist itch without actually spending money or cluttering up your house with something you don't actually want or need. It helps calm that fear that you'll "lose" the item if you don't buy it right then and there.

I find online shopping does this for me. I like reading the specs on the product, looking at reviews and reviewer pic. I’m still “experiencing” the product.

I’ve been trying to focus lately on buying EXPERIENCES instead of things. For example, at the beginning of the summer I bought a pair of roller skates. This in turn led to me taking lessons to get better, going to the skate rink a lot (which is actually a fairly cheap night out) and now using them instead of my car to get around when I’m going somewhere that’s only 1-2 miles away. And it’s been So. Much. Fun! Honestly, it’s been so fun that I don’t even feel the need to buy other stuff cause I’m still so busy using the thing that I bought months ago. I think that’s part of the joy you get by purchasing experiences. There’s more of a sustained level of enjoyment instead of just a quick dopamine rush.

This past year we lost both of my in laws and with that comes clearing out their home. My fil was a hoarder and my mil was a smoker. There is a lot that we have been able to save by bringing to our home and cleaning and furniture that we have been able to give away for free on Facebook being transparent that it comes from a smoking home. Yet in the end there has been SO MUCH TRASH. This experience has made my husband and myself want to be every aware of the things we have, because everything becomes trash to someone at some point in time.

The concept of Swedish Death Cleaning is so relevant here. The concept of trying to not leave behind a "Project" as my legacy (as I've seen my parents struggle with) has been very informative to how I choose what to bring into my house.

One of the nice things about growing up poor and now being comfortably middle class if I NEVER impulse buy. No matter how much I want something, I mentally have to sleep on it one night before I buy. Also I always forget just anyone can buy extensions. To me, it’s still like a movie star exclusive thing.

I volunteer at a charity Thrift Shop and last week I just cleaned up and priced a bunch of fall decor items that were almost identical to the photos you took including the metallic pumpkins. Priced them for a dollar each!
@360shadowmoon

I like seasonal decor but I just reuse the same ones every year rather than buying new. I keep them in storage for the part of the year I'm not using them. Also, the beauty of Fall decor is that the whole aesthetic of Fall is organic and nature-based - pumpkins, leaves and other autumnal harvests... Why not just collect actual squash and leaves for your decor and then eat/compost them instead of going to Hobby Lobby? EDIT: "You" as in the collective "you", not the OP.

Shelbi your shorter hair looks soooooo good! You do you but if you are looking for support in talking yourself out of it, here are some things you can think of. 1) your hair grows naturally and will grow back and those extensions will last longer than you need them 2) short hair can make us feel vulnerable because long hair can feel like a security blanket, there may be other lower waste ways to make yourself feel safer 3) it looks soooooo good. Like truly you know your needs best but feel free to engage with this comment if you need support in saying no. 💕

For what it's worth, as long as you want a keyboard that just makes that clicky-clacky sound, they're called mechanical keyboards and there's a huge hobby/secondhand community around it. Sorry I know that defeats the point of your anti-haul, but if you just like the sound, you can get a perfectly nice one secondhand without buying into the trend

I used plug-in headphones that was 20 years old and all three of them broke last year (all second hand from my family). Then I got wireless earphones as replacement. My sibling kept using those earphones to the point where I got another one and gave those earphones to my sibling to keep. I'm planning to keep these earphones until they break btw♥️

I really liked this iteration of the anti-haul because it's something we can all apply to the things that tempt us. For me it is not "fall things", for example, but it might be kitchen appliances and gadgets (guilty!).. But the advice still is valid... Great video!

YT seems to be going down the drain, unfortunately. My recommended page is always filled with irrelevant videos or videos that I have already watched. Most content creators I follow have also seemed to stick with their standard uploads and have not branched out into new content for a while now, so I've lost interest. I still enjoy vlogs and whatnot, but it is sad to see this happen as I am not a fan of reels/short-form content. Anyway, major props to you for talking yourself out of many of these things! I anticipate most of the trendy items will be listed on local marketplaces within the next 1-2 years as the next "new" thing comes into town. I appreciate your transparency!

Same, I’ve been on here since 2005 (*cries in elder millennial*) and it does seem a bit less popping. That being said as my interests change I’m finding content from months or yrs ago that I haven’t seen, which is great. And I now had time to go through all your vids I’ve missed - and yours and Madison’s channel almost completely! Anyway love this style of video. Keep ranting! [edit] okay regarding the extensions - I feel like most folks would be inclined to say “do you! Get them anyway!” and I agree mostly BUT I feel as your hair grows out there’s a lot to learn. Not to get too deep but I’ve found that sitting with hair shorter than what i was used to and what I felt comfortable with taught me so much about how I view myself, the value I place on my hair, how others view me and the value I place on that - etc. I’m sure you’ve already thought through/experiences those things but I definitely wanted to highlight that.

I would not recommend extentions. As someone who has had bob length haircuts to long hair, strait hair grows quickly. Try to enjoy the hair you have. Try hairdos you never did with your longer hair. Before you know it, it will be back to the length you prefer. I can never settle on one style. Also you may want to look up some of the ethical issue that can exist with real hair extensions. It another product that often lacks transparency.

Taking a photo is something I do with my son who's 6yo and it works great for him too. Also, we furnished our whole house with free furniture from Freecycle and FB freebies. Got some really awesome antique pieces. We did buy a new mattress though - need a special one for my condition. It's awesome to hear you talk about the process honestly. I think you should get the extensions if they'll make you feel good. If having your hair shorter makes you feel uncomfortable, it's a worthy cause.

I love these, always a good one. Especially since by her nature, Shelbi was raised as a hyper-consumer. (which to an extent, I was too) and it's nice hearing the thought process of a person who was conditioned to buy-buy-buy actually talk themselves out of buying things. I also keep a list of "things I want" and I rarely think about them again and rarely buy them. I've become really good at talking myself out of certain things. But as someone who over the next few months will hopefully be buying their first home- there are so many things my spouse and I want for the house or want to do to the house and it's HARD not to just run to any store and buy whatever catches your eye. So, Shelbi, I FEEL you.

As a grad student who will be in even more debt in the future (lol 😂), my whole mentality of trying to save money has basically been slowly pulling me into eco-minimalism. Buying furniture secondhand, propagating plants, having reusable things when possible (e.g. napkins, dishcloth, water bottle), only buying new things if I really REALLY need them, etc. Taking it slowly at a time lol

I didn’t even realize those keyboards weren’t common use. My husband has always used them because the noise your hearing is also about the pressure against the key. This is important for people who work with keyboards and have arthritis. So they aren’t pounding on the keys destroying their joints.

Lovin’ the anti-haul! I do the same with taking pictures ... most of the time I never go back into my photos and look at them. The one time I did decide to go back to a consignment store to buy something after ~2 weeks, it was already sold! Made me feel good that someone is using it now. As for hair extensions ... no, don’t do it. Your real hair is beautiful and once you go to extensions, will you have to keep getting new ones put in every few months? Seems like a big waste of $ and resources. You made the decision to cut your hair, now you know. Just let it grow naturally, and you’ll have beautiful long hair again.

I really appreciate you making these to see your thought process before "buying" something! In regards to the extensions: do what makes YOU happy after you thought it through. I got hand tied extensions about a year ago when I was in a wedding because my hair was SO short and I could not style it well. The way I look at them is that it is an investment that makes me FEEL good. I noticed that when I didn't have them I was more inclined to buy makeup/clothes/jewlery/etc to make me feel better about myself. But the extensions made me feel so good even when I was in pajamas so that urge to buy other things went away! I just took them out for the duration of summer & am putting them back in next week. So it is something that if you take care of them, they can last a really long time!! I've owned my hair for almost 2 years now and it is still usable!

Hi Shelby, great video! Just wanted to say that I love your hair, and I didn't notice a massive difference. I was once obsessed with growing out my hair and every time I had to cut it a bit I was very upset but my friends and family would never see a difference. That saying, hair is very important to me and if getting extensions would improve the comfort of your life it's a thing to consider. Also, maybe try to estimate how long it would take you to grow your hair back to the length you like.

I will say that there are a group of people who are low-income who contribute to this issue as well. There are some who experience a "scarcity mindset" and buy in excess b/c they don't want to run out of something. Stores like Marshall's, TJ Maxx, and other stores have also allowed people who are low-income to buy things they don't need d/t low prices. In my experience, the pull to buy something to make you feel better can be really strong, and there are plenty of people who will buy something cheap to hold them over rather that put that money towards needs. They are also the population who needs to buy items that are low quality with a short life due to the inability to save for high-quality items. Mind you, middle class and wealthy people are able to contribute way more to waste due to excess money, but I think that it's important that we don't cut these people out of the conversation. I feel that low-income people also have their own reasons for how sustainability can be challenging that are important to talk about and problem solve :)

You reasoning yourself out of buying the keyboard is proof that I can continue to resist the urge to buy things, so thank you for showing me I am not alone. This is also a great point because it is relevant with any type of advertisement. Because something is constantly being advertised to us, or shown repeatedly to us, somehow we subconsciously think we want it, when in actuality, it's just something trendy and not necessary for our lives. They make it seem like everyone has one, but only we don't so the Fear Of Missing Out (FOMO) kicks in. It is really hard to reason yourself out though because of how consumerism and buying things is subconsciously advertised to us through social media/advertisements/tv shows/etc.

I really needed this. Fall makes me so happy and I want to have a fabulous porch and deck out every room. But I don’t need it. And one of my few Halloween decorations that I had to have a few years ago I donated because I don’t like it anymore. This was so helpful!!!!

I’m a picture-taker as well but for holidays/special events my husband and I keep a shared google doc with our items that we have been sitting on for a while, if choosing to buy new. Since these are typically only looked at once-twice a year we end up editing down our list or deleting items we have fallen out of love with prior to buying.

Haha, I'm coming in a year later on this one (just found your channel) and SO agree with finding what's important to you rather than purchasing just 'to have'. I'm in Australia and we really don't do seasonal decor like it appears is the thing in the US but this Christmas we were quite decorated but only because 98% of it was my kids' artwork they'd made over the past 4 years, and that I'd kept.

So true about the ads. I will buy something online (or heck, even just look at it), and ads for similar items will follow me.

I've been working on being more sustainable for a bit now, but especially recently I've really made an effort with my purchasing habits. Second-hand shopping isn't really... all too available where I live, so instead I try to at least support small businesses and not corporations, especially with novelty items like jewlery and stuff. I'm really only starting out but your channel gave me a lot of direction and tips already :D

Watching this video right after I got a coupon code from an online underwear brand I like. Thank you for helping me talk myself out of buying more underwear. Damn the cute prints

We have just finished building our dream home and it is filled entirely with our old furniture, hand me downs, roadside finds and things from Marketplace. I'm talking about a brand new, contemporary house. I don't care about fashion. I care about surrounding myself with things that make me truly happy and I care about the environment 🙂

I can't relate to KZfaq being lackluster, maybe its because I follow a ton of content creators. I have found that doing something in the background while watching a KZfaq video has helped if I want to be engaged more.. doing something tanagable. Recently I've been scrapbooking and upcycling all the paper-junk mail I get in my mailbox and making them into boarders for family photos etc. I'll do that while passively watching KZfaq this movie/entertainment podcast, The John Campea Show. Love your idea about taking a photo of items you crave then reflecting and deciding if it's truly worth buying. I'll take that advice with me.

girl get the extensions! you can research to find extensions that are produced ethically, and in my opinion its absolutely okay & worth it to purchase something that will help us feel more comfortable while trying to navigate this crazy beautiful world

Ugh yes i love the mechanical keyboard ASMR. Looked into buying one but luckily i talked myself out of it bc i only have a laptop so it's like why would I buy a keyboard for my computer than has a built-in keyboard? Love your content and it's really gotten me into snti-consumption/ecominimalism in the past year. Did a no-buy July and going strong for September too thus far.

What are you going to do with the extensions once your hair gets back to the length you like? How long will it take for your hair to get to that length and can you wait until then?

I would love to see a video on the piece of clothes/ furniture/ bag etc….. that you repaired multiple times. I have a pink cotton shirt that has 3 woven patches and I just painted over a stain. I think it would be cool to a see a most repaired video. I’m sure there’s lots of ideas out there that we could benefit from.

The struggle you experienced with considering hair extensions is so relatable for us eco-minded people! We all have that non necessity we are seriously mulling over. I hope guilt wasn't the primary factor in your choice to not get them! I know the criticism public figures experience can be brutal, but it is your life and choice to make. If you take the time to consider the item, how it fits into your life, its footprint, etc., then I think you made the conscious and logical choice you were stiving toward... thank you for sharing : )

Shelbi, I am not coming for you, honestly. This is just my opinion. I love your hair shorter. It looks so good on you. ♥ Your longer hair was kind of overwhelming, IMHO. However, if you like it longer, nothing wrong with that, and it WILL grow, girl!! Good on you for resisting the extensions, as I have heard they are not very environmentally friendly and also not very good for your scalp. So yay for resisting! 😁

Re. KZfaq is not being as inspiring I think many (who haven't left the platform) have taken a summer off to enjoy life a little this year. I personally did, and I have so much content already filmed that I just need to get to actually edit 😅 Anyway I was so happy this morning to see a classic anti-haul video from you! 😄
