The “gotcha” attitude really bugs me! One place I constantly run into it is when people talk about wind generation for electricity. People love to show up and talk about bird deaths with that “gotcha” attitude. But they’re making this comparison in a vacuum and totally disregard the fact that coal/natural gas power plants actually kill more birds per KWh generated! And they ignore the fact that the leading cause of bird deaths is actually outdoor cats. So keeping our cats as indoor only and supporting Trap, neuter, release (TNR) programs in your local area will have a MUCH more profound effect on bird lives…

So many content creators deal with sustainability, environment and conscious living, yet this is the only channel that I follow religiously because you tell things as they are. I'm tired of the picture perfect lifestyle, of women who look and talk exactly like one another telling me to dump my stuff and replace it with bamboo products. I stopped following everyone who tried to showcase their yearly trash contained in a jar, because it was giving me anxiety and making me wonder why I can't reach such ridiculous goals. We are all doing the best we can with the cards we have been dealt. Sending you love from Europe! 🥰

For what it's worth I love your slogan. It really helps any time something feels like only a small effort that won't help much to remind myself that any good I can put into the world is a positive. People love to criticise to make themselves feel justified in giving up and not trying at all. We can all only do the best we can with what we have and none of us can be perfect simply because the system doesn't allow us to but that doesn't mean we should just give up like many people sadly seem to think. Plus talking about our efforts helps everyone because we can all share ideas and it helps us all improve little by little.

I love your perfectly imperfect ways. Im shit at boundaries and do not envy your exposure to excessive commentary, i would simply crumble at a small hand full of them. You had me at vote with your dollars but im happy to watch your journey. Im so sorry for the struggle you are faced with but also grateful that you stay angry and keep fighting. You are a super hero. Thank you for being you.

I absolutely hate how people pointed out that you drive when one of the most criticized things towards the US government is their zoning laws (and how they were influenced by car companies) and that they aren't sustainable. In the Netherlands and maybe even Germany this would be a semi-valid criticism (although very classist), but not towards someone in the US? No. There are entire videos on "Climate Town" and "Not Just Bikes" about this. It's really not that hard y'all. It connects to environmental racism and classism as well. There is a reason Texas is having the social structure it does. I hope more people learn about the impact of zoning on climate and sustainability, because those laws were literally made based on what car companies wanted. Of course they make Americans car-dependent.

Shelby- thank you for making this video. It's really unfair that people are this nitpicky with your content. When people are new to low waste/sustainability, you are usually the first person I send them to because of all the reasons you listed. You seem like a real human being! You drive a car! You eat what you want to eat! You live in a house! I have so many friends that see people like me (live in a big city with ample public transit, in a small space, etc) and think they can't make any changes because they can't make the changes I've made. And a lot of sustainability "influencers" live lifestyles even more outwardly perfect than mine. The content you make is honest and genuinely helpful and that's what I share it with so many of my friends.

Glad you're mentioning your imprefections.. have this idea in my head folk that care about this issue don't ever face 'hiccups' basically. My husband doesn't hold the same values as I and I'm not willing to ruin our relationship over my ideals. I have to accept my household will carry plastic bottled water because my husband loves the taste of it. I can make myself feel better by contacting the company he likes and suggesting they use not virgin plastic and have a non separate cap that can cause issues if disconnected to the bottle.

People need to understand that living 100% sustainably in this society IS NOT POSSIBLE. We can only do our best with the tools we have, and the rest is up to corporations. As individuals we are simply subject to the means we have, everyone has different needs and abilities, it is simply not realistic to expect everyone to do everything all the time. I would argue that it is better that we do some of it some of the time than to give up because we don't feel like we can do it all. It is psychologically proven that you cannot SHAME people into being better, quite the opposite actually. People get stirred away from being more sustainable when we start gatekeeping. This is not meant to be a fashion but rather a paradigm change. So everyone chill out, be kind, do what you can, lead by example, and like Shelby says: Advocate for the rest.

First of all I LOVE how REAL you are. You're channel has changed the way I think about things so much. On the internet everyone has opinions, and there really are people that are just out to spread negativity. In my experience you have to just wade through the B.S. Even some of my mom's opinions I ingnore, so you better believe some random people on the internet can be ignored. Keep living YOUR life girl. No one is perfect nor will they ever be. You have a whole audience that you've inspired and believe me we support you.

Thank you for sharing your perspective! :) I'm a third year medical student, and I chose to become a medical student to address human suffering. A lot of aspects of my life, just because of being a medical student, are fairly unsustainable. Public transit is not an option for me, ignoring the fact that I live in Texas, because being on time is literally a matter of whether or not I keep my job, I cannot risk not being on time. I also have to buy lots of supplies that cannot be purchased secondhand, like my stethoscope, hospital attire (all of my business casual is secondhand but scrubs? Not willing to buy those used), notebooks (tech is iffy because of patient confidentiality), and other things that non-medical students don't think about. Not to mention the process of getting into medical school/residency, which usually means flying all over the country to accept whichever school/job you get offered. Of course I do the best that I can, I eat 100% plant-based, always buy clothing/furniture secondhand, and I try to reduce my impact wherever I can, but I will never be perfect. Other environmentalists pointing it out just makes me feel helpless lol

i’ve been watching your channel for years now and i don’t usually comment but i love what you do! i love your videos, you’re one of the only youtubers who i consistently watch. i don’t have many people in my life who think about sustainability and i think it can be easy to fall off the wagon, but i feel like you always pull me back on. i notice how you always mention that your tech is second hand or that you prefer to buy things second hand wherever possible, and i’ve seen you waiting at the bus stop for hours with Madison in your vlogs. I am hard on myself and I feel like I need to do things perfectly but your content helps me know the things I can do, and to give myself a break for things out of my control. I’m also resolving to comment on more of your videos 😄

Shelbi, what I enjoy about your videos is that you are very well-informed and show us doing your best, even if it isn't absolutely perfect. When I see others who seem to be perfect, it often makes me feel like I'd never be able to do that and I think it has the opposite effect of alienating people. I'm a teacher and would often find myself focusing on the small percentage of things going wrong in the classroom, only to be reminded that most things are going amazingly. Similarly, I think you have a ton of people following your videos who are very inspired by what you are doing. Please keep doing what you do and don't stop being you!

Hi Shelby, I’m a huge fan of your content- not only because i’m endlessly inspired by you with new ways to live more sustainably but also because you keep it realistic and don’t hide behind a ‘perfect’ zero waste image! I’m so sorry people are always looking for things to criticise- especially now I know that’s a reason you don’t post much food content- I would LOVE to see more food/sustainable eating videos from you (and frankly i couldn’t care less about your weight/size as it’s nobody’s business but yours!) but completely understand if the needless critics make that too difficult for you. Thanks again for all of your amazing videos- you truly make SUCH a great difference to our world 💚

I love that your content makes the sustainability world accessible to ANYone. You’re so encouraging and humble in how you live your life. It’s crazy the amount of care and thought you put into so many things, it’s kind of intimidating. But then your content is full “if this is where you’re at and what you can do that’s amazing!” I’ve learned so much here, but the biggest things are how to be encouraging to people wherever they are in their sustainable journey and allowing grace for myself when I can’t/don’t want to be perfect. THANK YOU for all you do. You’ve helped me change my life for the better!

Hello Shelbi! I totally love your content!!! What you're doing is extremely important and it makes a huge difference in the world! Thank you for your lead! Even though I have no scientific proof, I'm pretty confident that these judgmental people either criticize you because you're doing better than them and they can't stand how well you meet your goal and how big is your impact or they are people that simply see enemies everywhere. No one owes an apology about their choices, anyway. Our goal as a community shouldn't be "perfection". Perfection isn't viable. If we strive for perfection we will end up doing less for the planet instead of more. Also, as you say sustainability is a "gray area", so there is no such thing as "perfection". But if we can assume that such a thing exists, then you have come very close.

You sticking up for yourself and clearly naming what you will NOT stand for is so badass!! I know for a fact that 99.99% of the people critiquing you aren’t doing half as much as you are to lower their own environmental impact, so they have no basis to try and tear you down. Sending you hugs! (Some) people can be just awful! No one is perfect. And the people who leave these comments aren't perfect either - it is just that they want to pretend that they are. One of the things that I LOVE about your channel is that you don't claim to be perfect. You show the parts of your life where you aren't perfectly sustainable. And at the same time, you call it out - you say, this is not the most sustainable thing that I do but I am doing the best that I can and that is what matters. Lots of times, you mention what is the most sustainable option for those who are able to do this (access, affordability, lifestyle, etc). There are so many people who think that they can only be environmentalists if they do everything...then, they get overwhelmed and do nothing. That is the last thing that this planet needs. Thank you for everything that you do!
