When this thing returns to operations, it'll be the most epic locomotive to watch operate. Only down fall is the wait, and the possible lack of steam on the Western Maryland for a good while after this year till #1309 gets restored :( It'll be well worth it though :)

Not to tell people how to do things and as this has already been done but you do not move a steam loco with the rods connected unless you have oil on the crossheads. Good way to damage them and they aren't easy to find anymore.

When I worked for the Great Northern way back in 1966 I held the job as the head brakeman. My engineer told me that he would make the first coupling onto a train and that I need not give him any signal. All he had to do was look out the cab window and go from there. He would make very soft couplings and not like this guy did. Too bad the roadmaster was not there to witness this coupling as a stern lecture would be the order of the day. Regardless of the coupling it should be made very gently. I can imagine if this was a car load of tvs or similar products it would have done heavy damage to the cars contents. Just my observation here..
@4501trainman7 жыл бұрын
I thought the engineer was pretty rough on coupling up #1309 too. I also thought these people should have lubricated a lot of the running-gear on #1309 before attempting this move.

Based on the similarity of the font type and color used for the numbers on the backs of the tenders (and the fact that they both even have their numbers on the backs of their tenders), and knowing that the 27 at the beginning of the number belongs to the C&O Kanawas, I'm willing to bet that the locomotive is C&O #2705. After doing a Google search, there is indeed a C&O #2705 that has been preserved. But the only confirmation I could find that it was on the WM Scenic is this picture: www.rrpicturearchives.net/showPicture.aspx?id=3522312

I can tell you that the speed of a steam freight engine isn't everything. I have O.Winston Link's 1957 'Sounds Of Steam Railroading' LP-Record, which I converted for my own personal use into an Audio-CD. On side-A-sequence-3.he recorded a N&W Y6-2-8-8-2 Compound starting a freight-train out of Waynesboro,Virginia at night after switching out some cars. The sound that it makes when it shifts from Simple to Compound-mode is like nothing I have ever heard,as one can tell when it starts using steam-twice. It sounds like raw-brute-power from those steam-days.

***** I'm wondering if it's for operation on WMSR since they'd basically physically lose the 1309 to the WSRM or if they're transfering ownership to them
@PereMarquette122310 жыл бұрын
It says right in the description "for restoration to operation" it is going to run again. The B&O is willing to let it go because they would rather see it preserved and operating rather then preserved and rotting away.
@TFN545910 жыл бұрын
***** Okay that's what I was trying to clarify, I wasn't sure if the B&O people were handing off ownership of the 1309 to the WMSR or not for their operation

Tailterrier27 1218 is in very good shape, just not finished. Most of the same work would be needed to any other engine, if anything 1218 is a great candidate for someone with deep pockets and all the other "stuff" to run her (shop facilities, a host railroad, crew and etc..). In a dream world I'd like to see 1601, a 2-10-4, some Canadian steam power like CN 6400, CP3100 and many others.

It would appear that these guys are running the pistons without lubrication. That is really not to smart. What are they douing to do with this thing. Restoration is not a paint job and scraping rust. Yes, why don't they go after the allegheny and get that going along with a couple of other big boys. These museums covet this big engines and let them rust away instead of turning them into useful equipment.
@jennifertaylor30148 жыл бұрын
what's the difference between a mallet and a Allegheny locomotive
@gravelydon70728 жыл бұрын
+Jennifer Taylor A Mallet is a type of compound articulated loco that uses the steam from the boiler twice. When it goes into the small high pressure cylinders it expands and drops in pressure while doing work. That lower pressure steam is then used again in larger cylinders that allow it to expand further doing more work before being exhausted. This loco is a Mallet of the 2-6-6-2 wheel arrangement. An Allegheny is a simple articulated. All steam goes to the cylinders, expands while doing the work, and then goes to exhaust. Steam is only used once in the cylinders and all cylinders are close to the same size. The Allegheny is of the 2-6-6-6 wheel arrangement.
@boxcarwillies16038 жыл бұрын
well 1309 isn't a Allegheny. If you've seen the wheel arrangement, it's a 2-6-6-2, not a 2-6-6-6. Then, a mallet is pretty much an articulated loco, only dif is the first piston set feeds steam into the second set of pistons.
@308RoadReady8 жыл бұрын
A mallet isn't specific to any wheel arraignment. It is a TYPE of articulated steam engine as said before that uses the same steam in BOTH sets of cylinders. The OTHER type of articulated uses the same size of cylinders in front and back sets and uses seperate steam for both (big boys, challengers, allegheny). Mallets are more efficient, but are slower then the other type. A mallet could be of many wheel arraignments, but are usually slower then 60 mph while the other class can run up to 90+ in some cases.

idk if you will get this and if so, whether you can help me. I'm trying to find info on one spot of the rr. from big pool, (the start of the western md rail trail) headed toward Hagerstown, through clearspring md. Believe at one time was a portion of track called the Hagerstown and clearspring r.r. or clearspring and Hagerstown rr. either way, I contacted several organizations and people, and no one seems to have heard of it or know what I a talking about. the rail trail is directly behind my house, I can see the c&o and the Potomac river, and the wv banks. as a kid the chessie went by. now csx, no one, can give me info on who owned that portion and what name was it under, and when? see in 1924? the circuit courts burnt, in an attempt to burn the documents. So standard oil and greedy proprietors could steal what people wouldn't sell. w/o any records on file, and more corrupt than we see today, they just handed portions of track over to whom so ever they chose, eventually the gov breaking it up. but I believe I own the portion of which I speak. or maybe it was part of the junction station in Hagerstown idk. I have yet to see mention of it, and I look every so often. Help plz? ty

Two C&O locomotives both with incorrect yellow numbering and lettering. They were lettered in white, not yellow. Why does practically every museum with a C&O locomotive screw this up?
@JonBvideo8 жыл бұрын
All the models and decals are wrong too than. Seriously, I think it was really yellow.
@blackwatchaudio56308 жыл бұрын
+Jon B. Rail Videos They were white; there are sufficient color photos from the steam age to prove it. The reason most are yellow is because C&O trimmed it's diesels yellow, and when they were cosmetically shopping the locomotives they were donating to various museums and cities the yellow diesel paint was plentiful, white was for steam and steam was gone but for the hulks they were painting up for display. And so they left Huntington Shops with yellow lettering, usually in awkward block letters instead of the authentic serif script they ran with. Anyway, that's the story behind the erroneous yellow lettering of C&O locomotives. As Josef Goebbels once said, "Repeat a lie often enough and it becomes the truth." The models and museums are wrong. If you don't believe me email the C&O historical society and they will confirm what I'm saying.

What makes no sense to me is that in spite of it having a series of over-fire air jets bolted to the firebox, it routinely runs under its own big black cloud. Massive fuel waste, massive point source of air pollution. At times it appears that its stoker spits bursts of bituminous coal, not at all stabilizing conditions of the fire. Crack the fire-door for secondary air! IMO a big public relations black eye.
