idk, about the dream, mariko's medal wasn't unique, in fact I imagine the Portuguese priest would give her one fairly common back in his homeland. Plus, we come back to the dream, it's more than one scene. And when have you ever dreamed yourself to be very old? No dream I ever heard of includes the dreamer being old. Perhaps the scenes are meant to be ambiguous. You can think of it as a dream if you want. Maybe?

"Ultimate excellence lies not in winning every battle, but in defeating the enemy without ever fighting". -Sun-Tzu Torunaga embodied that perfectly. He sacrificed as few pieces on the board as possible and ensured their deaths all served a greater purpose. The other members on the council of regents threw away the lives of their subjects like they didn't matter and gained nothing from it.

I think the finale is superb even without a huge battle scene. The title of the book is Shogun (将軍 which means general in Chinese) and the finale really shows us how brilliant Toranaga is as a general. He fought using clandestine and covert strategies. Almost Sun Tzu like. He said, he does not control the wind, only study it. He did that brilliantly as a military leader to a point that the final outcome of the battle was already decided.

@@SutterKrump You probably misunderstood. It's not about Toranaga from a moral standpoint. Rather, it's about the show portraying him as a masterful military leader employing Sun Tzu-like tactics in winning the war before the battle even begins. "Shogun" emerges as a captivating journey into the heart of medieval Japan, showcasing valor, intrigue, and cultural richness with unparalleled finesse. The series not only transports viewers to a bygone era but immerses them in its intricacies, thanks to its meticulous attention to detail and historical accuracy. One of the standout features of "Shogun" is its breathtaking cinematography, which beautifully captures the essence of feudal Japan. From sweeping landscapes to intimate character moments, every frame is a visual feast that enhances the storytelling experience. As we revel in the triumph of "Shogun," one can't help but hope for more television shows to follow in its footsteps, striving for the same level of quality and dedication to storytelling. In an age of endless content, "Shogun" stands tall as a shining example of what television can achieve when excellence is the ONLY guiding principle.

Opposite ending grade from me. I gave the finale a 3/10. I read the original novel as well as watched the 1980 show, and while I thought the first 9 shows of this new series were outstanding, the last one just left me feeling disappointed based on what I have read and have already seen. I mean, the whole "dream sequence" diversion at the beginning did not appear in either the book or the 1980s show. Why not just bring the 1975 novel to life like Peter Jackson did with the "Lord of the Rings" series? After all, I don't want someone's additional "creative" intepretation or input on a beloved work, I just want some literary work to be brought to life. Why is that such a hard thing to understand? Watch the "Lord of the Rings" series or the awesome Granada "Sherlock Holmes" shows from the 1980s as proof as to what sticking to the source material can bring.

Having watched the original series in 1980 and having read the book prior to that, I was not especially impressed with the 2024 version. So much was changed without any real purpose. The conflict between Blackthorne and Father Alvito, the relationship between Blackthorne and Rodrigues, the fact that Blackthorne was a highly educated man who rapidly became fluent in Japanese (the character was a polyglot: fluent in English, Dutch, Spanish, Portuguese, and Latin), the dynamics of the relationships between Obi, Yabu, Kiku, and Blackthorne (Kiku eventually became Anjin's wife much to Obi's dismay). It was Obi who stopped Blackthorne from killing himself over the threat to Anjiro based on an order from Yabu. Even the Buntaro archery scene was dumbed down. The rescue of Yabu after his being washed overboard was completely changed for no apparent reason. It was just a jarring experience for someone who read and loved the book.

They showed him being polite and respectful, even to prostitutes. They showed him in anguish and wracked in guilt over the death of some random, unimportant villager. Captivating series and engaging characters. Torunaga is charismatic and powerful. Mariko-sama is so captivating. She reminded me of Daenerys Targaryen. This series has a much better ending than Game of Thrones. It's much better overall. I wish there would be season 2.

John Blackthorne (William Adam’s) never returned to England. It was absolutely just a dream, and not reality because that wouldn’t be a truthful ending. William Adams lived out the rest of his life in Japan. John saw what he would become if he held onto the loss of Mariko & returned to England, so he let go of the rosary in the lake to signify that he had let her go. He changed his fate. That was the whole point of showingJohn letting go of Mariko’s rosary.

What struck me the most about this final episode was how non-chalantly and without any ceremony Yabushige took out his blade and commited Seppuku. Hell, he wasn´t even kneeling! In the end, he did go as a Samurai though: he did not fear death.

8:40 I love it when Yabushige said that. On earlier episode he said that cracking your head is much more lower than boiling to death, he also states that its not worse than being dogs eating your body. Edit: I don't think there is a need for season, its just the series ended in a hypothetical ending. I'd only 1-3 episode short for an actual ending for it

One important thing : Toranaga is behind the the burning of the ship. He promises to punish the "traitors" who did this, those being the townspeople. He doesn't care ultimately if Anjin lives or dies, or if he has to kill more townspeople in the search of the "traitors". What he cares about is Anjin's attachment to the people, to Japan and more importantly to Toranaga himself. That's all he wants to see, so when Anjin says take my life but spare the townspeople...he knows he's won, against Anjin. He knows Anjin cares. He knows that Anjin doesn't think the people are all "stupid". Toranaga has a vassal...

@@SutterKrump Yup. The whole premise is about what people are willing to do get what they want, and what people are willing to risk to do so. Underlying is the Japanese sense of duty and honor and they conflict with the 1st point. There will be sacrifice, but people do so honorbound. The older general, forget his name, he knew there was a strategy. He didn't know Toranaga's specific strategy, but he knew the end goal and he was honorbound to accept his death was necessary to the goal. Mariko the same. She knew she was a pawn in a larger scheme, but her honor demanded she sacrifice herself to the plan. The ends justify the means. Really deep, well done, enjoyed the show immensely l!

@@SutterKrump Well, since it's based on historical events, we know Tokugawa (Toranaga) wins the Battle of Sekigehara. But within the framework of the book itself, truthfully the outcome of the battle itself is irrelevant. This is because Toranaga's plans and schemes, how he used people, etc were all about getting a battle at all. That's it. He doesn't become Shogun without a battle. He doesn't get a battle without a plan. This part of the story is about The Plan, not the battle.

The executive producers have already said they won't be doing a second season. The book has been adapted, so there's nothing else to work with. If FX decided to do it anyway, even with the lesson every producer in Hollywood should have learned from Game of Throne right there in their faces, it won't be all that good. The real person Blackthorne is based on, William Adams, really did continue to live quite happily in Japan for the rest of his life. He built the Tokugawa Shogante a fleet of Western-style ships, and was even granted special permission to trade with foreign countries. He never saw his English wife or children again, though he did write them at letters. It's why we know so much about his life. The head of the British East India Company's HQ in Japan was also a close friend with Adams and wrote quite a bit about him and his family up until he left Japan in 1623.

While I knew that this series would not be able to do the book justice, a few more episodes would have been able to resolve things. Although I can understand not having the battle, just having Toranaga explain himself on a cliffside is just weak. The series has masterfully brought to life fuedal Japan along with its intrigues and violence. The finale was like watching an enormous carnival ride grind to a halt. The power/funding was cut and the producers had to wind it up before it stopped altogether and left too many threads up in the air.

My husband and I found the final episode of the remake to be anti-climatic, especially compared to the 1980 miniseries. We also noticed that certain scenes from the book & 1980 miniseries were transposed to other characters & even to other times: f.ex., Yabu going temporarily deaf (as Blackthorne did in the book) and going a bit crazy after Mariko's death (as Vinck did when he saw the wreck of the Erasmus), or Toranaga preventing Blackthorne's suicide to protest punishing the village for the wreck of the Erasmus (instead of Yabu preventing Blackthorne's suicide to protest punishing the village if he didn't learn Japanese quickly enough).

I think the ending was smart, even though it wasn't exactly what I expected. A lot of us were probably anticipating a big final battle, which would have been cool. The Battle of Sekigahara in history was pretty epic and could've made a movie on its own. But I get it, battle scenes are expensive with all the actors, special effects, and CGI involved, so it makes sense that they avoided it. Plus, I heard the book didn't even have the battle. Overall, the ending felt reasonable, even if it wasn't as grand as we thought. Still, I'd give "Shogun" a high rating.

Which did indeed take place, he did win, and it launched the Tokugawa Shogunate… so, great plan… Except: Torunaga says Lady Ochiba’s decision to hold back her son’s participation will win the battle before it starts. It was actually the bloodiest battle in Japanese history. Did I get the scene wrong, or is he in for a messy surprise?

I'm fairly certain that season two has been confirmed now, though this is a few weeks after this video was published... This show is definitely game of thrones level. The political intrigue was top notch. Many don't understand that most of the civil wars fought in Japan rarely even saw armies actually engaging on the battlefield. The vast majority of them were fought in the court with schemes and a few calculated kills that forced your enemy to either escalate the situation or concede and admit defeat. The latter being more common than the former. This show does the upmost to depict that to an unhealthy degree. While the west would dedicate entire generations of men to certain death in needless civil wars, Japan generally had a different attitude to fighting amongst themselves. Their culture of honor dictated that outright public hostilities between Daimyo were generally forbidden, unless given express approval by the ruling Shogun or Emperor, depending on which currently held power at the time. Feuding nobles in the west would fight the crown as much as they would fight each other, honor be damned. Despite the anglo view of this region of the world at the time, Japan (and the east in general) were, and largely still remains, a far more civilised place than the superior military powers of the anglosphere. There is a reason they saw us as barbarians as apposed to the savages we believed them to be. Our arrogance made us appear incompetent and our general lack of respect for traditions that didn't align with our own is the reason we were viewed as morons. Largely, even today, that sentiment is still a thing in that region of the world. Europeans caused far more issues in the east than we ever solved. All the wars that occurred after our arrival are a direct result of our meddling in a region we didn't care about and had no intention of understanding...

6:08 Sorry to be that “well, actually” guy, but women did not commit seppuku in Feudal Japan, rather their cerimonial death was called jigai. The series does a good job in portraying how Mariko tied her kimono to her legs to avoid any indecency but lost historical accuracy points for two reasons: there was no assistant (kaishakunin) and the target of the dagger was the jugular, not the heart. No intestines on the floor like the men.

But he had all the time homesickness The old dying John Blackthorne is on his deathbed and remembered his life and what he really experienced. But he´s between memories, reality and leaving this world. This is clearly staged, and is dreaming, he would hold Marikos crucifix again. Like he did holding it during the whole last episode. And he is back in England and became a grandfather.
