The 2013 'trash can' generation Mac Pro has been controversial for quite a while now, but with the arrival of new M1 Pro and M1 Max MacBooks, I figured we could take another look at it to show you guys how utterly and completely dead in the water these things have become. What was once an overpriced means of buying a desktop is now a nearly pointless endeavor in wasting money, nothing more. Is there any hope for the trash can Mac Pro?

Good luck on that. G4 cubes never went that cheap, before bottoming out and prices rising again. It won’t be as bad though - there are more trashcans than cubes, because the cube wasn’t a true Pro machine at any given time. I for one never plan to sell mine, and it’s frankly easy to store it. I also love my PowerMac G4 Dual 1GHz but it is taking up valuable space. And it will never run Windows 10 or a decent Linux, whereas 12 Xeons will be handy to do some odd jobs like that for, what? 10 more years? 20?

hopefully they won't go there; people buy mac pro so they can put PCIe card into them; and that will probably be the main reason to buy one given how the M1 max is powerful (and given the fact it will probably end up in a mac mini)

HDMI 2.1 and latest Bluetooth and WI-FI 6e. … and there should be room for 4 nvme pcie4 connectors inside … for up to 32TB of internal storage…. @@silvestrocrino3256 the Mac Pro is a very niche product for people with very specialized tasks. People don't always buy mac pro to do things related to graphics; the audio world use a lot of dedicated PCIe cards with or w/o DSP; as well as fast storage as PCIe. There are many reasons to need PCIe slots. Apple has stopped the nonsense of slim and light above all else and got in a good direction for pro users with the 16"; the Mac Pro; and now the M1 pro/max macbooks. They will likely not go back to something like the trash can; and they'll probably keep what was appreciated with the lastest Mac Pro; and that is expandability. I suggest you take a look at Neil Parfitt's channel who (justifiably) uses every single PCIe slot from the mac pro for his setup (he even removed the included one with usb ports); then you'll understand why people would need PCIe slots (and why people would need a mac pro period).

I recently bought a used “trashcan” for US$650. It was sold to me as base model, but it had the dual three gigabyte graphics cards (D500), a 1 terabyte SSD, 8 gigs of 1333 DDR3 ECC DRAM, AND THE 4-core Xeon processor. I installed 64 Gigs of 1600 DRAM, and upgraded the processor (myself) to the faster of the 2 available 12-core Xeons. My total cash outlay was just a hair over US$900. Now, I vacillated between buying a 2013 Mac Pro and the new M1 Mac Mini. What made up my mind for me was that a new Mini, for pretty much that same price would have come with only 16 gigs of RAM, and only 512 gigs of SSD storage. But more importantly than that, the M1Mini is totally NON UPGRADABLE! If I had bought one with a 1TB drive, it would have upped the price to just about $1100! A 2TB drive would have added US$600 (which is ridiculously outrageous). But however I would have configured the Mini, whatever I would have bought, I would have been stuck with. That made the decision for me. Adding another 8 gigs of RAM adds US$200 to the Mini’s base price, but I was able to replace the 8 gigs of 1333 DRAM that came with my Pro with 64gig of brand new Samsung DDR 1600 ECC RAM for US$65! If I want to, I can add up to 4 gigs of SSD, to the pro, and go all the way to 128 Gigs of RAM (and do the latter for less than Apple wants to increase the Mini’s RAM from 8 to 16 gig). Non-upgradability is a cynical ploy by Apple to make one buy new hardware when one needs more RAM or a bigger internal SSD. Mr. Miani, you need to understand that people have different needs, and although to you the 2013 Pro might be useless, speed and benchmark performance do not tell the whole story here. I love mine, it’s perfect for my needs. I’m a writer. My work consists of word processing, image manipulation, and occasional graphics, CAD and schematic capture. For these tasks the Trashcan is perfect and it will likely serve me for a lot of years.

That's great! But I think the key point is, 2 years ago it was 10,000$ to get maxed out trash can. Soon it's likely you can get much more performance from a 1000-2000$ Mac mini. You can't upgrade the mini, but the amount of performance on the table is still future proof for many years ahead (just like the 10k trash can).
@georgegraves9635

@@oliverhughes169 Thanks for your comment, but I think the point is that Mr. Miani’s blanket statement that the 2013 Mac Pro is “absolutely worthless”, is, like most blanket statements, wrong. The performance of this 12-core computer is very good, and the upgradability is definitely worth the price of admission.

I have the same trashcan. It's fairly close to maxed out with 64GB RAM and 2TB, 12 core etc. I bought it new and it was a lot of money. When it was new it was pretty decent and ran my music studio with Logic Pro quite well, and TBH it still runs it reasonably well. I waited for an age for a new Mac Pro but when they arrived they were a huge amount of money and there were instantly rumours that Apple were switching to Arm so I didn't want to spend another £10k on a machine if I wasn't going to get the mileage. When the M1 appeared it was amazing, the Mini was killer, however it was a bit limited as my studio has 3 screens on and 30TB of attached storage, I couldn't do that with a Mini. I could buy a new MBP and just use it as a desktop but it seems a bit sub optimal. As soon as there's an M1 Max Mini available then I'll flip the trashcan in a blink. So stop talking their value down for a moment :)

This reminds me of the PPC to Intel transition. I still have and use a G5 Dual 2.5GHz, 8GB of ram with Logic 9 on it at our practice spot. It's still up to the task even 16 years later. I have to say, mine remains very useful (and pleasant) for heavy office tasks. It handles multiple retina 4K very nicely, and I recently added a third HDMI display. I’ve got a 16 TB storage array on Thunderbolt, and for these kind of “digital hub” jobs it continues to outperform every Intel CPU laptop and Mac Mini. All those cores make it very smooth, so it’s got a fine luxury feeling when you keep it off the racetrack. You just need to stop giving it large 4K encode jobs and H265 compression tasks.

@@paolopetrozzi2213 If you want 4K60, it does need to be DisplayPort monitors with MST (Dell UP2414Q is the example used in Apple Stores back in 2014). You could use up all 6 Thunderbolt ports doing this, but to keep full bandwidth, you'd use only 1 of: The top 2 on the left, the top 2 on the right, and the bottom row of 2. Just bought my trash can a few weeks ago to run Logic X on Mojave (for 32 bit plugins). 6 core, 32GB RAM, D500’s, 512GB SSD for $400. The only two “issues” with it are the power cable being a cheap 3rd party one and the couple of minor scrapes on the case (but they’re on the back so I can’t see them anyway)

@@seshpenguin You probably could build a pretty incredible modular home server setup with one? Have a whole basement or closet cabinet dedicated to thunderbolt accessories and raid ssd. You could have document/media storage, virtual machines running 24/7. It’s basically a very adaptable and cheaper way to build a pretty competent infrastructure for a small business or home use. Wouldn’t be perfect, or small, but ports and cores galore.

I bought Mac Pro 2013 recently, cost me about 1600 dollars for the top spec. I knew it wasn’t going to to be the best performing machine seeing as it’s old but I always loved the way it looked on the desk and it was the top spec, so I’m happy with my purchase. I think you’re wrong to call it worthless, it serves the purpose I need for a computer and it looks pretty cool while doing it.

agree. I myself use one and am not going to change it yet. it works as it should and it looks good)) I think it was love at first sight. I have several apple thunderbolt monitors plus massive storage volumes, I am a composer and edit video, I am also fond of modeling and photography. And he copes with all this without problems. yes, perhaps the new ones are faster, but they do not hold as many monitors. undoubtedly the future belongs to ARM architecture. but after that I will not sell it. let him live with me with honors)))

"It's just old. And bad."🤣 The hilarious thing about the trashcan Mac Pro is that it was billed as being 'innovative' at all. This very same concept for the 'future' of the professional desktop computer, was already done in the form of the G4 Cube - a machine that, thanks to its fancy resin enclosure and proprietary ADC monitor connection - remains the embodiment of failure. That is, until the TrashCan Pro took the throne of useless. Great video. Sorry you're sick. Fortunately, iFixit has a conversion kit available to turn your 2013 Mac Pro into a Neti Pot.

You are an iron man. I could NOT have done this video battling all that sickness. But you pulled it off and did great!
