Say Alan, how do you think a Canon Clone Trooper would react to his Legends counterpart? Personally, I would think the Canon Clone is going to be horrified by his other self. Legends Clones didn’t really like the Jedi or the Republic, and they weren’t so hesitant in committing atrocities for the Empire. Meanwhile I think the Legends Clone would be disguised that his Canon counterpart liked the Jedi and was loyal to the Republic and that he needed an inhibitor chip to carry out Order 66. Having a name, new hair style, and painted armor might also irk the Legends guy. Maybe he would think the Canon Clones deserved to be tossed away by the Empire. Sure, the two have similarities such as both preferring to follow orders rather than disobey them and both initially were loyal to the Galactic Empire, but even then there are key differences. Push comes to shove, Canon Clone is more likely to disobey orders if necessary or if they go against the morals taught to him by the Jedi and Republic than his Legends counterpart. Also, a Canon Clone is going to view some things about the Empire as going backwards, like how he goes back to being called a number and has to get rid of his armor colors while the Legends Clone will see it as the galaxy finally advancing.

@@ugiustuskeiserus8066 Yeah, in regular legends they absolutely knew about Order 66 but not necessarily that it was the plan. @@TrueArt_1 It doesn’t make any sense though, because while Palpatine was evil he wasn’t stupid. Throwing away a ready, battle hardened army that not only won you the war but also is bio-conditioned to obey your every will, in favor of random human recruits is incredibly stupid. Disney went with it because they wanted to retain the clones as “the good guys” even though they were the ones that killed the Jedi, destroyed the Republic and brought about the Empire.
@Cyfiero

Some people feel that the inhibitor chips made Order 66 more tragic because the clones themselves were victims robbed of their agency, but I always felt that _Battlefront II's_ version was even more tragic because no amount of camaraderie and good will from Jedi like Aayla Secura could dissuade any clone from betraying them in cold blood with real intent. But while the inhibitor chips may seem to have made the betrayal more palatable for a child audience, it actually makes Order 66 more logical. The reality is that there was a contradiction in the characterization of clones prior to _The Clone Wars._ They were described as simultaneously bioengineered and conditioned to be dispassionately and unwaveringly obedient to the chain-of-command. But they were also described as having the requisite independence and critical thinking skills to be soldiers capable of sophisticated strategy and improvisation. This was even more-so for special units like the ARC troopers who were shown from their very debut in the comic _Republic 50_ to be perfectly willing to talk back to their superiors and advise them against flawed decisions. As a result, clones were always portrayed as not merely mindless droids but individuals with full human cognition capable of developing personalities and new ideas through experiences. This characterization, already present in the oldest works from 2002-2005, necessarily contradicted the premise that statistically 99%-100% of clones executed Order 66 without hesitation on all battlefields. If clone troopers are capable of enough independence to develop from experience and think critically, statistically it is impossible for not a single clone trooper to have disobeyed the order. Being able to scrutinize the logic of a military action and to detect sabotage or deception is part of clone troopers' training to be the best soldiers of the galaxy. Probability-wise as well then, it does not make sense none without the inhibitor chips ever found Order 66 to be suspicious. The narrative in _Battlefront II_ might counter that clone troopers were all bred on the grand plot to purge the Jedi from the start. But as memorable as this story was, it was an outlier even back in 2005. No other source had presented this interpretation of Order 66 as the clones being in on the Sith conspiracy. It is dubious as well because other sources at the time had claimed that clone troopers' lack of malice had been crucial for their ability to execute the Jedi without their intent being sensed ahead of time. Moreover, I find it difficult to believe Darth Sidious would entrust the plan of Order 66 to all the millions of rank-and-file troopers. _Battlefront II_ was also not one of the earliest media to humanize the clone troopers. _The Cestus Deception_ published before Episode III had already done this by telling the story of an ARC trooper who falls in love with a woman during a mission and learns to decondition from his indoctrination. Other comics and novels released in the era of 2002-2005 also make it clear that the clone troopers were not privy to Order 66. In _Labyrinth of Evil,_ there were clones who accompanied a last minute operation to uncover the identity of Darth Sidious during the Battle of Coruscant and were surprised and killed by the Supreme Chancellor as they encountered him. I ultimately came to support the concept of inhibitor chips because I think that before its introduction, there were too many discrepancies about the characterization of clones and how they could universally carry out the order. Statistically, it should have been impossible for it to have been done so cleanly when the clones were permitted to retain a measure of independent, critical thinking skills. It was not just Aayla Secura, but even Plo Koon was described in background sources for the movie as early as 2005 to have earned the respect of the clone pilot who shot him down. I also don't believe that it makes sense that Darth Sidious, being as calculating as he is, would have left this final, most critical piece of a millennium-long plan in the making up to chance. The plan for all clones turning on the Jedi without deviation from bioengineering and indoctrination alone would be untested until the very moment Order 66 is issued. If he could, he would use a means of mind control to ensure absolute and flawless compliance rather than betting no clones would diverge from the plan after a few years of independent development from their diverse experiences in the war. I would believe that a mastermind like Darth Sidious would have thought of such risks of the plan. The 501st journal in _Battlefront II_ was an outlier in its telling of Order 66 even for its time, conflicting with the oldest EU sources about it, and my personal interpretation has always been that its author retrospectively looked back on it many years later as a conscious, premeditated act when it might not have been at the time. It is partly a case of memory distortion and partly perhaps in the case of this particular 501st trooper, he did genuinely support it like how Crosshair initially supported the Empire of his own free will, inhibitor chip or not.

When RotS was young I read an interview (that I wish I had kept) in which Lucas was asked "were the clones somehow forced to follow order 66" the answer was "No. Their soldiers and soldiers follow orders". This is what the authors that essentialy created the clones lore were operating on, all the comics, novels and games were made with this idea of the clones in mind. Before the dark times, before Disney.

For the reasoning of the clones to execute Order 66, my head canon is that it is a combination. Now, we have the inhibitor chips, but having a clone army super loyal to Palpatine with clones fed up with Jedi make sense. All clones having a default to execute the Jedi when the order came in from Palpatine. But where Commanders Bly and Cody went "good soldiers follow orders," clones under Pong Krell and Ki Adi Mundi might have went "DIE JEDI!"

I think for me the reason I'll always hate the inhibitor chips is the fact that it makes the clones betrayal so much less tangible and applicable to real life commentary then the idea of a person so heavily indoctrinated by they're upbringing that before they can even think they've shot one of their closest comrades in the back simply because of an order from higher command and having to live with the consequences of having done that for the rest of their life as opposed to just losing control of they're body for a few minutes in which time their body does something horrific but they don't

5:18 this was my thinking too even with the inhibitors chips in place that didn’t change the option of the clones, most of the Jedi had no reason to have been given the commands they had they didn’t earn them and they definitely weren’t read for such responsible, most Jedi saw the clones as a disposable resource not people there was only a few commanders that had the respect of the clones they commanded(Ashoka, Anakin, Obi-wan, Yoda and maybe like a dozen or so others) I mean Anakin may have been of the mindset of CHARGE!!! But he wouldn’t put his clones into a situation he wasn’t willing to be in and he would listen when they reminded him that “”that’s all well and good sir but we’re not Jedi, we can’t deflect blaster bolts we just have to hope our armor takes enough of the hit that we can survive it.”” A lot of the Jedi used the clones as cover to hide behind. It’s no wonder most clones didn’t like the Jedi (and that not counting the mandalorion DNA).

My headcanon is that Operation Knightfall was still done with de-activated chips to ensure the success of the operation... Palpatine couldn't trust such an important task to a bunch of brainwashed kids, he needed them in a clear and level-headed state of mind so they could predict/adapt to any possible tricks or attacks the Jedi might launch/attempt. The reason we don't hear about it is simply because Rex wasn't there, and anybody else who would've been either isn't important to the canon yet, or just hasn't said anything(for obvious reasons)

Interestingly enough, the comment that after the Kamino Incident that a variety of soldiers were used as templates for cloning ties in nicely with the later Thrawn Trilogy. Since Thrawn used a variety of personell to clone to fill his ranks, its suggest that either this was the moment he decided to do so or he used the then in place new modus operandi of the empire for cloning.

As I recall, the 501st in Battlefront 2 actually do manage to usher in their era of order and peace because, unlike in Episode 5, the mission in the game ends with the 501st successfully placing a beacon that lets the Imperial fleet in orbit bombard and destroy the last Rebel transport, the one carrying a lot of the leadership, before it can take off.

Its kind of ambigious. I always back in the day assumed it was alternative continuity, where rebellion is crushed, but then again, if we think Hoth as defeat for rebellion, it may just have seemed to soldiers of 501st that the rebellion had been finally crushed, while they had just been forced to temporary retreat. The transport might have been important, but not as important as the soldiers of 501st assume.

I'm torn about the inhibitor chips. I like them because just like you said it makes them victims with most clones not wanting to carry out the orders and being completely forced by the chip and later showing signs of regret, it turns them into such tragic figures to see them slowly being replaced and forgotten in an ungrateful galaxy. At the same time i like the idea of them willingly carrying out order 66 as it adds realism to it, the clones may have been bred for war, but they were still human, still had emotions and still formed bonds especially with their fellow clone brothers. So to see their brothers die day in day out especially under the command of uncaring or incompetent jedi would obviously lead to a lot of resentment, however the legends stories abiut the clones who remained loyal to the jedi and helped them during 66 are also amazing as it shows that clones were still individuals and that not all clones and jedi were the same as with most of these stories it involves a very caring and compassionate jedi who truly cared about the clones under their command and earned their loyalty despite order 66

Largely because of this story, and the fact that it's the version I grew up with, I've always struggled with the idea of an inhibitor chip retcon. The original idea being that they are just fully loyal and will follow any order without question always seemed really interesting to me. Order 66 being activated by a verbal order doesn't make a lot of sense with an inhibitor chip, when it could just have easily have been a switch that gets flipped, but instead is a command from the very top of the power structure that cannot be refused.

Also remember if that Clone was not proganda this was post Order 66 and like wolf this guy still had after effects of the chip especly since he apantly fought all the way to Hoth so his chip was likely still very active like those of the clones in the new vader comics.

Yeah I really can't understand what they were thinking with the battlefront and part 2 remakes, maybe part 1 would have been understandable since it had been years between games, but by the part 2 remake they should have learned their lesson. They should have kept the Iden Versio campaign, it's good, but they absolutely could have fit a redo of the original 2005 BF2 campaign. Then they left out Mace Windu even though he was one of the most popular heroes in part 1. Then they screwed up space battles, the entire thing that made those missions fun was the idea of having to destroy your enemy's command ship by either direct damage to the various key points on the outside or by infiltrating the enemy ship and sabotaging it from the inside. Then the two biggest sins they committed... First they took away our playlist feature, that was easily one of the more fun aspects for me as a kid, lining up like 5-10 missions with a theme, it was like putting together our own little mini campaign. Then finally the removal of galactic conquest... I just... Man it's not fair.

In Legends, the stormtroopers were initially clone troopers, but the Empire began conscription, and after the Kamino uprising, cloned other hosts for their troops. In promotional materials of the Force Unleashed II, we even get an entry from Cody, who remained with the Empire in the Legends timeline, now in charge of training new conscripts, lamenting at their quality, including one specific reference to a recruit who banged his head on a bulkhead during drills (a nod to the blooper of the stormtrooper who bumped his head against a door on the Death Star in a New Hope).
